maggotAUBURN, WA – Scores of maggots were discovered eating away at an obese elderly woman’s dead flesh, but authorities say there may have been an upside. The insects likely kept the helpless victim alive by slowing a spreading infection.

The 70-year-old woman’s daughter, Sherrie Morton, now faces felony elder-abuse charges after King County sheriff’s deputies found the victim stuck to her bedding in a home strewn with garbage and smelling of feces, urine  and ammonia, according to reports. She had  an unknown number of maggots eating at an open wound, and her bed sheets were described as being “soiled with the byproducts of an injury and covered in bugs.” Not unlike a freshman dorm room during finals week.

Deputies were called to the home near Southeast 315th Street, where they spotted the 70-year-old woman laying on a bed through a window. Upon entering the home, they were confronted by Morton, 46. She allegedly told detectives that she was her mother’s caretaker, and that she called 911 after spotting the maggots and smelling “rotting flesh” in her mother’s room.

However, reports have surfaced saying that a family friend forced Morton’s hand by threatening to call law enforcement. Also, a friend of Morton allegedly told police that she saw maggots in the elderly woman’s wound four days prior to 911 being called, as well as flies circling the room.

Paramedics called to the scene said the elder woman’s leg wound was “septic and gangrenous” and was at least a month old. Guess Sherrie isn’t the observant type.  Investigators say that one reason the woman hadn’t died from the infected wound may have been because of the maggots that were feasting on it.

“The maggots may have helped keep (the woman) alive due to the fact that they were eating the rotting skin that was infected and helping to slow the infection,” said Marylisa Priebe-Olson, a King County Sheriff’s Detective.

Firefighters and paramedics responded in hazardous-material suits to help extricate the 400 pound woman. She was transported to Valley Medical Center, where staff allegedly removed hundreds of maggots from her body. No word on whether the maggots might have been employed initially for weight-loss.

Morton told detectives that her care of her mother was adequate, but that it took several hours just to change her mother’s diaper. Morton has been charged with second-degree criminal mistreatment of a dependent person. She is being held in King County jail on $150,000 bail.

I’d also like to say that I hope that woman has Alzheimers or something so she isn’t fully aware of what has happened to her/is happening to her. How horrific for anyone to go through that.

I’m also slightly impressed that a person of her size has made it to her age. Statistically, that has to be an amazing feat.

  • mean birch

I call bullshit … the FRIEND who saw the maggots but didn’t do anything. Charge her too.

  • newstarshipsmell

Okay, I know I used this joke last week, but…

Did they charge the maggots with practicing without a license?

CUNT! I can’t believe anyone would allow their mother to suffer this way… well, unless your mom is Joan Crawford or something,,,

    > No word on whether the maggots might have been employed initially for weight-loss.
If that were possible I probably would’ve tried it already. 😉

  • Simplyatomic

So awesome to post this at dinner time!

  • Athena

Valley Medical Center? You mean, I could stop by and visit this woman on my way home from work today?

  • Read the first few words of the headline and NOPED right the fuck out of this story!

(Disinfected) maggots are actually used in modern medicine for this very purpose. I think they were used to treat MRSA just a few years ago. There are modern medical leeches, too!

Ask your doctor before taking maggots. Side effects include nausea and vomiting. Do not take if pregnant.

  • Curlykate910

Wow a day filled with delightful demon stories! Definitely saved the best for last though!

  • Oh..My..F**king..God. So nasty I had to spell it out.

Hundreds of maggots feeding on flesh not only look disgusting, they SOUND disgusting…pretty much exactly the same way your rice crispies in a bowl of milk sound…

Let mom snap and crackle, daughter gets POPPED!

  • Sarah L4d

I kinda imagined what that woman would have been like as a zombie. Or if she reanimated on the gurney. Horrifying.

  • MyHovercraftIsFullofEels

    Isn’t it finding 1/2 a maggot?

  • ultracreep

You’d be surprised how many morbidly obese elderly there are. For all that the healthcare biz would like to tell you that you won’t live long fat, there sure are a whole lot of obese and overweight elderly people. (Worked in long term care and rehab for awhile and my back can attest to this fact.)

  • Twisted1

Sad part is I think you even thinking about visiting her shows you care more about her then her daughter.

  • Parrot Toes

    Whatchyou talkin aboot???……………:P

  • sugarpie

    *gag*

  • sugarpie

No wonder it took the bitch several hours to change her diaper – puke, gag, wipe, puke, gag, wipe…

  • Kelly Eklectusbird

yeah but they aren’t exactly ‘living.’ Being confined to your home because you can’t get out the door isn’t a life.

  • VenusDoom3

    I have a feeling these maggots weren’t disinfected… *shudder*

  • CT

Note to self – be nicer to my kids.

  • G.I.R.L.

    400lbs? Daaaammmn!

  • MyHovercraftIsFullofEels

Mine was worse than JC. But now she is in a poor quality nursing home so I guess it all evens out and I get to keep my heart from turning black with revenge.

  • MyHovercraftIsFullofEels

I had maggots for dinner once. Well silk worm chrysalis’, but they are just giant maggots I guess. They were pretty good and I was in China, so you know what they say….

  • Buffettgirl

Thankfully my Mom was pretty awesome – Step-Dick, not so much. He was mostly mental cruel, but he got physical often enough… I have this little fantasy that his now 83 year old ass is locked in a wheelchair drooling on some front stoop somewhere…

  • Simplyatomic

I shared this with everyone at dinner time just so they could have a great dinner.

  • Craig Ellis

Wonderful, having your life saved by getting eaten alive. I dare Hallmark to come up with a card for this.

  • Parrot Toes

Sorry to hear about your loss. BUT, look on the bright side. You gained some really helpful friends out of it that you will never forget! Feel better soon.

    Would that work?

  • ultracreep

Not all elderly obese people are stuck in bed. Conversely, there are plenty of thin elderly people who are also stuck in bed. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not advocating eating yourself to the point that you are bedridden but obesity the way it’s medically defined doesn’t have to mean “so big you can’t get out of bed or care for yourself.” Basically, this poor woman, whether underweight or obese was not being cared for properly, period. Her weight probably had less to do with this than the fact that her daughter just didn’t give a shit.

  • LoKi4778

Tapeworms still work if you’re looking to go the parasitic route…

  • Parrot Toes

    Or……

Roses are red, Violets are blue.
I’m glad you aren’t dead, cuz maggots rule!

  • I had a buddy in high school who had maggots in his leg cast. The Dr said they saved his leg

  • MyHovercraftIsFullofEels

I would think that they might be genetically organic and germ free. I mean don’t they eat bacteria.

  • techsupp0rt

Damn, that girl is probably thinking she’s on vacation right now in jail.

As shitty as it is, this is pretty much what we’re subjecting people to when they can’t afford adequate care. Leaving one person in the care of a 400lb woman is exactly inviting this kind of thing to happen. In a nursing home, no one would ever be expected to move a person that size on their own without heavy equipment, if even then.

If you’ve never had to change an obese, immobile person’s dirty diaper, you can really have no idea. As hard as it sounds, it’s much harder than it sounds.

Oh, and shitty nursing homes aren’t much better. Not only will they often pull this same crap, but they will keep people alive as long as possible just to keep pulling that paycheck, even if they’re DNR, even if they’re suffering, even if they’re completely catatonic for years, if they’re old and ready to die – they drag it out for as long as they can.

You’ve got to have some money if you want half decent care. Otherwise, no one gives half a shit about you once you’re past the years of being productive or having the presence of mind to be able to vote.

Also some good incentive to lose some weight while you’re young enough to do so. Doesn’t matter how good of a facility you might end up in, or if you’ve got good family, being too fat in someone else’s care is NOT going to work out well for you.

  • Melissa Stopka

This is inexcusable. I hope they fill the daughter’s jail cell up with maggots, tie her to a bed and let her be eaten away, a slow and painful death. What a piece of shit!

  • Jessie Heavin

Ewww. Fat people are gross. Hundred bucks says in twnety years someone will be changing the fat ass daughter’s diaper!

  • That daughter is a bitch. My daughter is awesome.

  • Noel Jones

Yep it’s true, I am a Nurse in a health and rehab center..However the residents we have that are obese are not what I would consider to be elderly. 45 to 60. They usually come to us when family can no longer provide the care they require.

  • Noel Jones

It isn’t usually the nurses and aides that provide bad care, it is the corporations that own most nursing homes..keep the staff at crap pay, under staff so they can save money and get their bonuses..I know where I work all us employees that provide resident care do the most we can with the short help and time we have. I watch my aides and make sure residents are taken care of..turned and repositioned, mouth care, etc..

  • SouthAmerGrl5

See you guys all laugh at this but this is exactly how the zombie apocalypse started in my mind…I could care less because I am well prepared…I have the food, fall out shelter and the ammunition! Double tap my friends..it might save you from being eaten alive by maggots!

  • techsupp0rt

The one I worked at was privately owned, by one person. But it was run just like that. She also liked to hire people who pretty much just did as she said.
