body under bedHICKORY, NC — Here’s a story to freak you out a bit the next time you plan on staying in a hotel or, at the very least, relay to friends when they say the “body under the bed” story is just an urban legend. Police in North Carolina are at a Motel 6 after a dead woman was found rotting underneath a bed in one of the rooms.

Hickory police said an employee at the motel discovered the woman’s body underneath the bed on Friday after a guest complained about smelling a foul odor. “I heard some screaming and I don’t know what happened after that,” said Tim Brown, who was outside of the motel when the body was found. “I didn’t know anything was going on, to be honest with you, but wow.”

Police still do not know the identity of the woman, but believe a couple had been staying in the room and are now asking for help locating them. They have released a photograph of a white Previa Toyota van seen leaving the motel Friday morning and are calling the pair “persons of interest.”

Aside from the locating the couple, police hope to learn more about the woman, and how she died, from her autopsy. Employees say they are in shock by what happened. “I would never think it would happen at this motel,” said employee Angel Blankenship. “Maybe other motels, but this motel has a lot of security.”

Three years ago we reported on a similar situation.  Sony Millbrook was missing for a few months before her body was hidden in the metal box frame of a bed in the Budget Inn motel room she had been living. Even worse, the room had been rented out five times before she was found.

I knew a guy in college whose parents went to Reno and found a chopped up hooker stuffed under the mattress. I shit you not. I forget the hotel they stayed at but they ended up getting free hotel stays for life as a settlement.

I thought the maids looked under the beds for trash when they cleaned the rooms…. guess I will be looking under hotel beds more often for cash and other goodies left behind… hopefully nothing as ripe as what this guest and maid discovered…

Talk about not thoroughly cleaning a room

  • midniteshadows

I remember the one from the Budget Motel. Right after that, there was a slew of bedbug reports at motels. Then it was the “how clean is your room” with the black lights showing up all kinds of bodily fluids. I always traveled with Lysol Spray and would drench the room with it. If nothing else, it gave me peace of mind.

I found a condom wrapper beside a bed at a hotel one time made the fuckers knock half off..bought Guinness pints I won

Some maids get paid by the room, so they try to clean as fast as possible. It’s not the best job job being paid hourly, but when you get paid by the room you have a crappy job and you do a crappy job. I was a maid in college, and something like this actually happened at the hotel I worked at a couple years before I started. The maid was thorough and found the body right away and was so traumatized she got workman’s comp.

JFC She should have gotten long term disability until Social Security kicked in… well maybe that is a little much, but jesus christ can you even imagine…

People tip the maids daily… not just when you leave.

Yeah, after being exposed to those exposés, I developed my compulsive motel bed licking fetish, let me tell you.

This is why I always do two things when I walk in to a hotel room, 1) check for signs of bed bugs 2) lift up the mattress and check for dead hookers.

Yeah, when I think of Motel 6, I think of deluxe accommodations. I mean if this happened at the Four Seasons or even a Hilton I would understand. But when I stay at a Motel 6 I expect the very best.

The weirdest thing about that picture is how the corpse has such perky tits. Aren’t they some of the first things to rot? That’s some bra.

This is why I have upgraded to Super 8’s motels. They are like 2 better.

That’s what I like about you Tex, nothing but the best.

  • LuvsHorror

I always thought motel rooms smelled funny, like old farts.

  • ShelbySP

I don’t think people realize tipping is a must. Very few people leave them at hotels anymore. Sucks when the dead hookers you find in the rooms have more cash on them than you do =/

  • Texas Ranger

Yep! The ladies appreciate the little things that make them feel special you know?

If dead hookers you find in the rooms you are to clean have more money than you do, I suggest you wear your plastic gloves and “clean” carefully under the beds. ;)

  • restlessvagabond

Tipping isn’t a must when, as you said previously, maids often do a crappy job just because they don’t like their job. Not an excuse for half-assing it. I don’t tip for crappy maid service, especially since it usually involves the sheets not getting changed and the towels only being straightened, not replaced.

Sorry, still more afraid of bedbugs.

  • Jackie Kennedy

just goes to show they don’t clean their rooms very well.Remember always wipe down the remote when you enter :)

  • http://truecrimereport.com iLLusionS

I think it would suck if the couple they are looking for really have something to do with killing her ,or if the poor bastards had the misfortune of staying in a room with a rotten corpse underneath of them. Does this “highly secure motel” not have cameras in their lobby?
They aren’t looking for this couple that hard with what little details have been released about them.

  • Leasha

How did the maids conveniently miss a rotting corpse under the bed??

“No, there es no body in this room. You go now. I no fired, I keep job.”

  • BSmyth

When I was a hotel maid, I was a live in. When we cleaned the rooms, it was always very shortly after the person checked out ( worked on of those rent by the week jobs, may be different at say…a Days Inn) and not again until someone checked into that room. We would also leave the air on in the hallways ect. If it was not a very hot week and a good few days between checking the rooms, the smell wouldn’t have started by then. Also, they way most hotel beds are built, there is not an “under”. The mattresses are put on this hollow pedestal type thing, so there is no “under” to clean. Kick under the next hotel bed you get, you’ll see what i mean.

  • BSmyth

and what I mean when I say “there is no under the bed” is that it would take a lot of doing to put someone’s body inside that pedestal, and unless the clothing covering it ( generally black so as not to be noticed) or the bed skirt was lifted, we’d have no reason to check, because 99.9% of the time…no one puts things down there or would screw it up enough to make it obvious that they did.

  • Louis Cypher

I’ve worked in a few motels. Some 4 star some … well … not so much. And it didn’t matter , across the board they are the most unsecure places to stay. Those key cards are a false sense of security folks I assure you of that as well. I worked security at Super 8 , The War Bonnet , The Red Lion , Lac La Belle resort among others and will never stay at one again.
