Lisa VelezCape Coral, FL – Police were called to Lisa Velez’s home on Sunday evening after she was found living with her two autistic children, one legally an adult and one a minor, in total and complete squalor.

They may have been called there by Velez’s estranged husband, who had returned to the home after being gone for over a year. He found Velez and his two autistic daughters living with eight cats inside a home littered with a bevy of cats, feces, trash, old food boxes, ants, spiders, vomit, roaches and general nastiness. There were even animal carcasses on the back patio.

It could have been her neighbors who have long suspected something wasn’t right inside the home. “I would come out at 10:30 at night and she’s out there, her daughter out there running around the street, yelling at every car over 30 miles an hour,” a neighbor said.

It may have even been DCF, who hav been investigating Velez for two years. They had visited the home previously and had instructed Velez to clean up the living conditions for her kids. Obviously, they were not happy with what they found in the home upon returning.

Velez, who wasn’t so clean herself, didn’t understand what all the fuss was about. To make matters worse, several of the cats found living inside the home appear to have a respiratory infection, and a kitten had its eyes crusted shut with its bones protruding.

When animal control arrived and explained to one of the autistic daughters they were there to bathe and feed the neglected cats, the girl reportedly asked if she could also be bathed. The second daughter was found in a locked room covered in feces and urine.

Police In Georgia Searching For Elderly Woman After Her Husband Is Found Decapitated

“It’s a tragedy on multiple levels,” said Armando Galella, Board President of Adonis Autism Assistance Foundation. “A child with autism, depending on where they are in the spectrum, have a very difficult time coping with situations that aren’t patterned. To have that kind of chaos around them is only going to make their situation so much worse.”

Investigators say Velez’s estranged husband had recently returned to the home, after being gone for a year. He tried to clean up the home but was reportedly stopped by Velez.

Lisa Velez was arrested and charged with child neglect and animal cruelty. Her bail has been set at $40,000. DCF says both of her children are now in safe environments.

While neighbors decided to mind their own business regarding Velez and her children before this weekend, they didn’t seem to mind going through the pile of trash that had been pulled out of the home and placed in the front yard.

How thoughtful that their neighbors helped them out by cleaning (cough, cough, stealing) their stuff from the front yard. Gotta keep up the neighborhood, ya all.

Is the neighbor in the video drunk? I wish I were drunk right now too after reading this.

  • EveryVillainIsLemons

Probably a combination of mental illness, laziness, and lack of support. It’s a sad story. Here’s hoping that the kids end up with better parents.

I am surprised that nobody called that show the about hoarders. Nice of the neighbors to go through the piles of junk and help out the city sanitation department. They wouldn’t call the authorities when they , “knew something wasn’t right over there”. In my neighborhood when nekid people run around we generally call the police.0

  • CT

Nekid people you say? Where do you live? I’m due for a vacation.

  • WarriorArtemis

    Autism isn’t a mental illness…

  • EveryVillainIsLemons

I was talking about the mother, not the kids.

As of right now. I officially give Florida to the frickin Cubans. Let them deal with all the crazy assholes in that swamp of stupid.

  • ultracreep

The video in the link said that one of them was with the father.

  • Buffettgirl

Seriously??? While that woman looks to have been thoroughly beaten down by life that is NO excuse to treat ANY living being the way she has, let alone two autistic children. I’m also guessing this downhill slide didn’t start just a year ago when hubby left, making him JUST as responsible in my eyes for the condition those daughters were living in. It broke my heart reading that the one daughter asked if she could have a bath too…

  • Wolf_of_Mars

Just let ’em have South Florida. The rest of us would cheer!
    That’s where the crazies are.

  • patrickdh10

Where else but Florida. What is it with that state and the human tragedies that flow like a waterfall from there? Florida with it’s beautiful beaches and diverse ecology could have been a paradise on Earth. Instead it’s more like an insane asylum.

  • Carrie Dixon

That woman they interviewed seemed a wee bit intoxicated

  • Texas Ranger

Ok. But I want extensive testing done to make sure none of the southern one’s sneak through the fence.

  • Aussie Sabbath

Rather selfish of Dad to just up and leave without taking his daughters with him. Velez can live as a slob all she wants, but the girls and the cats had no choice in the matter.
After all is said and done, were the cats okay?

  • Kasie K

I always wish I were drunk

  • That bitch is WASTED!! I like how she tries to act like a truly caring person by claiming she offered help to them, yet never reported anything.

  • Aussie Sabbath

It’s hardly stealing. The junk was going to get tossed anyway, might as well let the neighbours pick through it.
We used to have bi-annual council cleanups, where people would put any unwanted junk on the side of the road for the council to take away. Before the council came, people would scavenge all sorts of stuff from other people’s piles. People would collect scrap metal and sell it, you could sometimes get a furniture suite or an old rabbit hutch/pet cage etc.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure and all of that…

  • CT

Actually, the homeowners did not pull the trash out the authorities did. We also have the same thing every April in my neighborhood and its fair game it YOU put it out on the curb.

  • DeweyCheatam

I”m thinking maybe he was in jail. Not that common for someone who “abandoned” the family a year ago to come wandering back in, IMO.

  • takurospirit

I wouldn’t take anything out of a house that I knew to be infested with roaches and various forms of bodily waste. These neighbors are…interesting.

  • WarriorArtemis

It doesn’t say anything about her being mentally ill…so I was assuming that’s what you meant. My bad…see where assuming gets you? lol

Also I want to say fuck you to the people that gave me downvotes, simply because autism in NOT a mental illness…it is a neurological condition. Yes, I know there is confusion as they both manifest in the head BUT there is a difference…a HUGE difference. Educate yourself people.

  • JohnQknowitall

In DC evictions include placing the evicted tenant’s property on the curb. It is usually pillaged by people who don’t live in the neighbor due to fear of being ostracized in one’s own neighborhood. My guess the thieves were from elsewhere.

I used to watch hoarders until the episode where a woman’s bathroom no longer worked and they showed her (I am still gagging) dumping buckets of waste (really feel the reflex a little now) on her front lawn without blinking an eye. They are a fucked up group of people.

  • Buffettgirl

I don’t think your down votes were because you said that autism isn’t a mental illness, I think they happened because it seemed a little snarky for a reply to what E.V.I.L. said. Just my opinion, but that’s how I’d read them.

  • 18th40

You just had to fucking describe that didn’t you ?

  • Athena

You know what I understand even less than hoarders? The people who watch them hoard. One has a compulsive disorder. What’s the other’s excuse? 😛

  • 18th40

Ha ! I have absolutely no clue but it’s certainly a great question, if only we knew someone who watches or has actually watched, we could ask them. I’m stumped.

  • JohnQknowitall

Hoarders is one of the most viewed TV shows currently broadcast… I doubt you can throw a dead cat fifty feet and not hit one.

  • JohnQknowitall

If it makes you feel better, my punishment is that sudden hint of gagging. I cannot even watch that show anymore. I am gagging and I have an iron stomach -seriously iron… I will spare you those details, but they involve helping terminally ill seniors.

  • JohnQknowitall

I kind of had the same curiosity of people who sit on computers all day as volunteers or professionals to trap pedophiles and other sexually dangerous criminals. There is a certain skill and interest there that makes them a bit freakish.

  • xNikkiLynnx

Really sad story but I couldn’t even pay attention to the rest of the video after the anchor said his name….freaking really Peter Busch?

  • WarriorArtemis

o.O interesting. implied snark by 5 words, I didn’t use caps, emoticons or overzealous punctuation. lol What the hell? I will admit, I am a rather sarcastic person, however I usually put a lot more effort into it. As stated previously, I assumed that the mental illness bit was directed at the autistic girls. I have seen many people say that autism is a mental illness before, however it isn’t and there is a big difference between autism and a mental illness.

  • Buffettgirl

This much I know from personal experience, autistic niece and a brother with paranoid schizophrenia…

I could be off base about the down-votes, I was just letting you know how it all read to me. You never really know with people though do you? 😉

  • Athena

I wonder about them, too. I mean, it’s one thing to think to yourself, “Yeah, I totally want to do that. Be that hero that catches the chimos,” as I know many here have. But when I stop for a while and consider, in detail, what that would entail, I can’t only imagine that they haven’t gotten that far with the thought. Or they have the freaky hero skill.

  • Aussie Sabbath

It’s like watching a car crash. You know you shouldn’t look, but yet you can’t look away.

  • Aussie Sabbath

But they were going to throw out anyway. There was just no way that they were going to keep all of that junk. Kids’ toys are one thing, but plain old junk is just not meant to be kept in a suburban home. The neighbours were probably doing them a favour.

  • Anne Droid

The woman they interviewed had the most annoying voice i ever heard – if i had to work with her I would rip my ears off

  • techsupp0rt

Father gone for a year, why wasn’t he charged with neglect, too? They didn’t say why he got a pass for being a deadbeat. She might have had them living in squalor, but at least she was there.

  • WarriorArtemis

It doesn’t matter either way. I just get irritated at the ignorance of some people about certain disabilities, to include mental illness as they all seem to have an applied stigma…which is sad.

  • Carrie Krueger

This woman is likely dealing with severe mental illness herself. The whole family needs help, but what they will receive is disdain and judgment.

  • captaingrumpy

You got it on the brain , havent you.
