Leila FowlerValley Springs, CA – Police arrested 12-year-old  Isaiah Fowler on Saturday and will be charging him with the death of his 8-year-old sister, Leila Fowler, who was murdered last month.

On April 27, the Isaiah and Leila were home alone when Leila was stabbed more than twenty times inside their home. The brother told police he saw a man with long grey hair leaving their home and found his sister suffering from multiple stab wounds. A neighbor also told police they’d also seen the man running from the scene.

Police began an intensive search for the suspect while residents were told he was considered armed and dangerous and instructed to lock their doors as deputies searched the area. Authorities searched the home and neighborhood, while dive teams searched two reservoirs near the house.

Aside from possible fingerprints and DNA found in the home, and a possible link to an abduction attempt in a nearby town, police didn’t seem to be getting any closer to finding the person responsible. But in a statement issued Saturday, Sheriff Gary Kuntz informed the public they could sleep safely as they’d found the person responsible – Isaiah Fowler.

“Today Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested the murderer of eight year old Leila Fowler. At 5:10 p.m. detectives arrested Leila’s 12 year old brother at the Sheriff’s Office’s Valley Springs Substation on the charge of homicide,” the statement reads.

The statement did not say what evidence led to the arrest, or if Isaiah has admitted to murdering his sister. I’m guessing the fingerprints and DNA must have linked him, as well as some of the knives police had taken from the home. The neighbor’s statement, the one that had me believing the boy’s story, was later discredited by investigators.

The neighbor’s statement was discredited for several reasons. She said the man ran in an opposite direction from the one Isaiah said he fled, she would not provide a description to the sketch artist, and she later recanted her statement.

  • I knew something was fishy with the boy’s story when I first read it.

  • I knew it was him. Too sad! It didn’t make sense.

  • That’s my question as well. What did the neighbor see or know that originally had them corroborate the brother’s story?

  • I had a feeling it was him but put it out of my mind when the neighbor said they saw someone too

  • Same here. Aside from being the person who found her, there was absolutely no evidence released that he had anything to do with her murder.

  • This is unbelievably sad!! I feel so bad for the family!

If the neighbor lied about who was seen running from the home, I have to ask why that person would obfuscate the investigation in such a fashion. If they did lie, why aren’t they in custody?
Something just doesn’t pass the smell test, here. I’m starting to feel like LE is just trying to close this one out as quickly as possible to save their own hides…

  • I seriously doubt the police, after a two week investigation, are going to charge a 12-year-old boy with murder, with no evidence, to save their own hides.

I would bet it took two weeks because they were waiting on the results of the DNA evidence they collected and possibly because one of the knives they confiscated from the home was proven to be the murder weapon.

My guess is is he will confess shortly, if he hasn’t already.

  • I totally missed the news report, but the neighbor’s statement was discredited because it was inconsistent and she later recanted. http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/video/leila-fowler-murder-witness-discredited/2348783406001

  • I have updated the article with the details behind the neighbor and why her statement was discredited.

  • I had feared this. I could not reason why someone who had been seen by a witness and obviously had no qualms about killing a child would leave the brother alone. Sadness.

  • I also felt like it was him when I first read the story but I am a distrusting asshole.

Fuck, that was the first notion I had when I read this story, I was hoping I would be wrong :-(. How shitty for the parents.

  • I had a feeling it was him from the beginning. WTF.. the little shit will be out in a few years, unfortunately

  • This is beyond heartbreaking…..prayers for that entire family

  • Omg. I had a feeling, when I read that story too, but then thought no way… 20 times? That poor baby girl. Why were they alone? I mean, I totaly understand that 12yo’s can be home alone, but they can’t legally be in charge of caring for their 8yo sibblings right? Especially if they fight like brothers and sisters do, the parents should have known better… R.I.P. Hon. So sad.

When this murder story first broke, my first thought was “The brother did it.” Kind of depressing that my hunch was right. I bet a lot of people thought the same.
As for people asking why the neighbor said she saw a stranger then recanted. She might be mentally ill or just screwed up. I knew a woman who was schizophrenic, She was paranoid & saw things all the time and her stories changed all the time. She would also tell a story to get attention & sympathy or to please someone. If pressed on details, she would eventually admit either she knew nothing, admit the truth or admit she made it up. If she’d been next door to this event, she would have claimed she saw the bloody knife in the stranger’s hand, but it would just be her craziness.
If it pleased the police to have corroboration that someone fled from the scene, this neighbor might have said it. I wouldn’t be surprised at anything and would wait for more facts on the neighbor’s frame of mind.

The neighbor might just be crazy.

  • The story didn’t sit well with me either. This is truly a tragic story

  • i know horrific events and abhorrent acts can happen anywhere at anytime but i think our current “way of life” will lead to more and more crimes that make no sense and tear our hearts out. i’d rather win the cancer lottery than raise a kid in this shit hole.

The neighbor was probably just attention whoring…

  • Shit. I knew this was the situation from the first minute i heard this story

Hopefully no one caught an attention STD. Those are hell to clear up.

  • Texas Ranger

Damn kids are effed nowadays. I used to fart on my sisters head when she pissed me off…not knife her to death. Eff me……

  • This case reminds me too much of the JonBenet Ramsey case. But, you know how that case went.

  • kimbev69

So the neighbor lying and the boy calling his mom prior to police makes me think he told his mother what he did and she asked the neighbor to lie, otherwise how did the neighbor describe the same type of person?

  • The neighbor seems to have been told what the fake assailant looked like somehow because she was discredited for saying he went in a diff direction

  • I had a feeling too

  • Plus obviously the boy was home with the girl so i really think when he called mom he told her

  • What the fuck? This is even more fucked up than I imagined! Wow. I have nothing to say… If it was the usual bit, pedophile rape, I’d say let him fry… But fuck, man. I really can’t wrap my head around this one… Let’s reopen concentration camps for white trash.

  • Sad — when I first read this article, I thought, “He probably did it”. Couple of years ago (before I started reading dreamindemon) I would’ve believed the kid’s story.

  • Thanks for posting the follow-up. It puts a whole new dynamic to work, the twelve-year-old offing his kid sister.

  • Wolf_of_Mars

Anything’s possible. Even my small doubts could be borne out in time. As with all crimes of notoriety, there is a massive amount of pressure placed upon LE to trot out anyone as a suspect in order to relieve that pressure. LE isn’t always correct. Something just isn’t right here, and for once, I’m not going to play with the other lemmings.

  • It’s one of those things that makes you wonder just how it can happen. There was a section on theories about sociopaths in my human growth and development class. Nobody knows for certain why they are this way. What a nightmare.

The neighbor is probably one of those people that wanted the limelight, so she claimed to see someone running away. A nosy, busybody that wants the spotlight is all she is. She should be charged with lying to the police as it slowed them down. And as morbid said, the police are not going to turn a 12 year old boy into a scapegoat, if they wanted one of those, they could probably find a crazy homeless guy that would do the trick.

  • Lemmings? What’s not right about them charging the boy?

  • EveryVillainIsLemons

Thought so. Hoped I was wrong. FUCK.

  • tkaz

That’s insightful. My brain cells never made it that far.

  • tkaz

Isn’t it a sad world when so many of us “thought so”. SIGH.

  • Buffettgirl

    Jeez I’m glad I wasn’t the only one! 😉

  • JohnQknowitall

I think the neighbor’s “story” threw everyone from their first instincts. My siblings and I would really get into some overly competitive fighting at times, but the idea of truly injuring one of my siblings was just foreign… The parents must be insane over this… what a fucked up mothers day.

  • Wolf_of_Mars

I’m just following my intuition, and not following the pack, is all.

  • Wow just heard 911 call the stepmom made she must be in on it! Crazy shit

  • No there is an adult in this insane mess! Poor baby girl rip little one.

  • A-nony-mous

Maybe the neighbor knew and liked the family or at least Isaiah and that’s why they covered for him.

  • Neighbor has a kid roughly Isaiah’s age, rumored to have been there at the time of the murder. They are lying to police too.

  • I have a feeling, Isaiah called his dad, dad came home and helped Isaiah get cleaned up, and make up story of the intruder. Dad returns to baseball game and waits for Isaiah to call. 911 is then called. BINGO !!!

  • Remember, this is an ongoing investigation. There is more to it that has not been released to the public. I am pretty sure this is just the tip of the iceberg. More arrests still to come.

  • kimbev69

You dont think the mom knew? I think she also knew but do agree someone knew, this 12 yr old came up with a story under such duress i think he was helped
