Shayla ShonnekerOREGON CITY, OR – Shayla Shonneker died after her mother’s live-in boyfriend, 32-year-old Joseph Wolters, accidentally shot her has he practiced holstering his loaded gun.

Oregon City police say 9-year-old Shayla Shonneker was playing in her backyard while Wolters was inside the home practicing with his firearm, having recently been hired as an armed security guard with an armored transport company.

As Wolters was holstering and un-holstering his loaded gun, it went off. Out of all the paths this bullet could have traversed, this one traveled through a wall of the home, and into Shonneker’s face 50 yards away.

A LifeFlight helicopter rushed Shonneker to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital, where she died. Wolters, a decorated Iraq War veteran, cooperated with police during an interview with detectives. No word on if he will be facing criminal charges.

Gladstone School District Superintendent Bob Stewart said the district has activated its crisis-response team and has established a safe room for both adults and students at John Wetten Elementary School, where Shayla had been a student since kindergarten.

  • So sad! 🙁

  • Responsible gun owner of the day….

  • come_and_see

What the fuck. Why would you practice holstering and unholstering your weapon with LIVE ROUNDS? Has he ever heard of things called snap caps or just using an empty magazine? Your house isn’t the gun range. Sigh.

Also, this is a 1 in a million accident. What are the odds that the bullet passes through a wall, travels 50 ft, and manages to hit a 9 year old in the head.

  • “As he practiced holstering and un-holstering his gun”? The first image I had was very Barney Fife-ish, but then it said he was in active duty in Iraq. How much firearm practice did he really need for a security guard position if he was in Iraq?

  • Scretch

I know. It is one in a million, yet people are always so quick to say it was an accident. I hope the forensic detectives check out the trajectory and all bc we know moms’ boyfriends hurting the non bio offspring doesn’t have such unlikely odds.

  • What a moron.

  • Jubilex

Either you have to take the magician stance – and that 1 in a million happens around 9 times out of 10 – or the physicist stance – that 1 in a million happens while you are awake to see it at least once a month on average for 99.99% of the population – or you can take the stance that bullets are just fucking evil and go out of their way to kill kids.

I myself like the Forrest Gump approach – stupid gets as stupid is.

Poor girl – may she rest in peace.

  • newstarshipsmell

Well at least his employer knows he has good aim now.

  • I seriously doubt this guy aimed through a wall and shot the girl in the head at 50 yards. It was just stupidity, which is the leading cause of most accidents.

  • why the fuck are all these kids being accidentally shot all of a sudden. i one could simply say that it’s just the exposure, but i struggle to believe that this happens like all the time in the states

  • It’s not all of the sudden. The news goes in waves, be it children shot with guns, or pit bulls eating people.

  • hmm, yeah I suppose it does. I remember the people eating people wave. that was fun.

  • TasteLikeCardboard

This reminds me of one of my brothers, who is a complete and utter asshat. He thought it would be a good idea to clean one of his still loaded guns, while lying on his bed in the apartment he shares with my two nephews and sister-in-law. Of course, the gun went off, and went straight through the ceiling. I don’t think he realizes how lucky he is he didn’t end up in a situation like this.

  • Yep bring back bath salts woot woot

  • AllElseFailed

Why wouldn’t he have had the safety on?

  • Zazen

    Because he’s an idiot.

  • Evan Oswald

did it really hit her right in the face? damn that’s awesome in a sad terrible awful way. just what are the odds? Which brings me to the point: i think he’s lying. Either he’s lying or people have their guns go off all the time but never report it. Because the odds someone blows off their gun, and the odds of her face being impacted when she was outside are both really low. really low. What kinda gun did this rent-a-cop have anyway?

  • Evan Oswald

i tend to agree with you, scratch

  • what a douchebag I hope they charge the idiot with something!!

  • Fucking irresponsible dumb ass.

  • What in the hell is a ‘safe room’ and what does one do in there?

  • Think he needs more practice.

  • wastintime

What the fuck? He just got a job as an armed guard, and survived a war? Are we sure on that? He seems to be to stupid to remember to breath!

  • Shayla Shonneker, 9, Died After Joseph Wolters Shot Her In Head While Practicing With Gun –

  • Texas Ranger

your goin to Hell for that one chief

  • You would think a war vet would know how to handle a weapon properly. What are the odds of this poor girl being struck by the stray bullet? So sad for this little girl and all that knew and loved her. I hope there will be some kind of counseling for Wolters so he can deal with this horrible accident.

  • kimbev69

i would kill this asshole…seriously who does that kind of shit and he’s a war veteran .. he should have known better

  • kimbev69

counseling for Wolters??? he’s the asshat that shot her due to his very own stupidity…counseling for her family and jail for him for being a dumb ass

  • Texas Ranger

After the sadness of the beautiful little girl dying, all my brain can conjoure up is this dickhead boyfriend lookin like Barney Fife trying to unholster his gun. Least Barney didn’t shoot anybody. That is the very reason Andy gave him only one bullet and made him keep it in his shirt pocket. You gotta be smarter than the stupid shits runnin around thinking they are Wyatt Earp. Zombie invasion?? Nope. It’s a Stupid Invasion. They seem to be multiplying daily.

  • Buffettgirl

This one is hard, this little one lived around the corner from a very good friend of mine, I’ve seen her playing in the neighborhood, but I’ve never met her. I think for this one, I’m going to give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he never intended to hit/hurt Shayla. According to the neighbor, she had to shout a few times at him to keep going with the CPR because he was sobbing so hard he couldn’t keep going. Should he have been practicing with a loaded weapon, HELL NO, did he intend to kill the child? Nothing so far says he did… God I hope this was a tragic accident…

  • Brett find some good news please

  • Brett find some good news please

  • But yes he is a dumb ass

  • But yes he is a dumb ass

  • driven .

The type of story is basicly now a daily occurrence and will continue to be as long as this backward country continues its OBESESSION with guns. Who needs Al Quedah when fuktard Americans are killing themselves their kids and each other with guns.. EPIC FAIL AMERICA

  • JohnQknowitall

Guns and Pit Bulls are never the problem… it is the owners. I say get rid of all three of them.

  • Athena

In the case of my cousin’s death, the gun went off in a bedroom, went through a wall, through the neck of my cousin who was walking down the hallway, and was finally stopped by the bar of the shower door behind which my aunt was taking a shower (and would have been seriously injured had it not hit the metal bar).

Sadly, given the number of people killed accidentally in this country each year, it seems the odds are much better than one in a million.

  • oh it’s all a hoax … didn’t you know like Newtown…(sarcasm)

  • Yes! Then let’s get rid of knives (especially since, statistically, they are responsible for more deaths than guns), and then cars! Soon we will be done with all sharp edges and we will all spend our days standing very, very still! 😛

  • MyHovercraftIsFullofEels

Gun deaths are actually at an all time low, statistically, while gun ownership is at an all time high. The accidental gun deaths of children have decreased 90% since 1975. But there was no interwebs or cable tv or DD to broadcast all of those out to everyone, making the problem seem much much worse. Such is the case with all crimes these days.

  • Jubilex

Dunno what kind of gun it was – if it was a glock – well the ‘safety’ is the trigger – if you pull the trigger – it fires – otherwise it doesn’t.

The way you ask the question *sounds* like you are assuming it had a button safety – when the most popular handguns do not.

Even a button safety isn’t foolproof against something silly like this – the more responsible thing to do is not practice with a loaded f’n pistol.

I myself keep a wooden bullet in the chamber.

  • techsupp0rt

More than twice and you’re just playing with it.

  • Wolf_of_Mars

Actually, Andy only let Barney have one bullet (that he was to keep in his pocket) because he shot one off when playing at holstering & un-holstering his gun…

  • Wolf_of_Mars

Most Glock handguns have a “paddle” safety. Their LEM versions may, or may not, depending upon the model.
He’s still a fucking moron, nonetheless.

  • Wolf_of_Mars

Most of us here are, TR.

  • Wolf_of_Mars

If he wanted to “practice” at fully loaded weight, he could have bought
some blanks, or weighted dummy rounds. But, Noooooo, he just had to use
live rounds without clearing the chamber before jacking in the mag. It’s probably a safe bet that he was turned down for the local Police Academies because of poor Psych. Evaluations, and, could only get a job as a security guard.

    RIP little one.

  • Texas Ranger

but he didn’t shoot anybody did he?

  • Texas Ranger

Yeah, I figger I’ll be holding the door to Hell open for a lot of folks round here.

  • FrikkenFrak

I realize how gigantically stupid this guy was, but part of me feels bad for him. I wouldn’t want to be the person who’d done this.

  • LuvsHorror

Hell is gonna be one rocking place! I always wanted to be a demon so I could torture some of the people in these articles.

  • Ebonyheart

So he was practicing for work and just forgot the golden rule of safety….don’t clean your gun while it’s loaded, don’t point it at anyone loaded….Don’t fucking do anything with a loaded gun unless you INTEND to shoot it. I fucking hate people most days, especially stupid people. Why can these people never end up shooting themselves?!?!

  • Wolf_of_Mars

    Luckily, no.

  • Wolf_of_Mars

You won’t need to do that, TR… I have the bad feeling I’m gonna be the doorstop.

  • Though I am hurrying a little this morning I was scanning comments as I was sure most of you will touch on whatever it is I could add. But either this guy has the worst luck ever, is really that careless, or something more to the story is not being said…
I don’ exactly mean that such accidents are not plausible (crazy shit happens all the time). BUT because crazy shit happens all the time one can hide crimes below that surface… If it was an accident though, this guy has got to be now, completely screwed in the noggin.

  • JGo555

REALLY!? It never occurred to his ass to TAKE THEM FUCKIN’ BULLETS OUTTA DAT GUN!?

  • LeaveMeBe

And if we don’t believe in hell, where will we go?

  • LeaveMeBe

Our obsession with guns? For most of us, we don’t have an obsession. I own firearms, but they aren’t an obsession. Our media and our government would have people believe otherwise, but the government and the media aren’t a true representation of its citizens.

  • Texas Ranger

California, or Canada, whichever is scarier for ya.

  • AllElseFailed

    Nope, Florida..

  • Texas Ranger

    Even Satan ain’t that mean…

  • LeaveMeBe

I’ll take Canada. I have friends there.

  • God what a sad and terrible final moment for this poor kid

  • t0ofly

When this first went down he said he was cleaning his weapon and it “just went off.” Kind of a common thing, makes you wonder how many times they are covering their ass for being stupid. Not that cleaning a loaded gun isn’t already stupid.

  • Texas Ranger

    that explains a lot.

  • There is NO way that that was an accident. Loaded gun, child in room, you start messing around with it! If he goes free he has got away with murder.

  • WarriorArtemis

Child was in the back yard. Now personally my kids do not go out side without me because I am super paranoid however I know that people allow that type of thing. It sucks that the life of such a beautiful child was lost because a dude wanted to stroke his pistol.
