Axel Charrette, 2, Drowned By Teen Babysitter’s “Drug-Crazed” Boyfriend

Axel Charrette, 2, Drowned By Teen Babysitters Drug Crazed BoyfriendMexico City - Two-year-old Axel Charrette was killed in Sayulita, Mexico while on vacation with his family at a vacation home they were renting, and now his 16-year-old babysitter and her boyfriend have been charged with his murder.

In a statement released to The Watch, Jen and Randy Charrette stated they had hired a 16-year-old girl to help around their vacation home. On February 28, the girl was babysitting their two boys when she let her 17-year-old inside the home.

Realizing that her boyfriend was in a violent, drug-crazed state, she locked herself in a bathroom and left Axel outside the home and his older brother in another part of the house. For reasons unknown at this time, the boyfriend hurt Axel and then tossed him into a pool where he drowned.

They go on to say that the teen and her boyfriend have been arrested and charged with murder in Mexico City. They were also told by a source in the US State Department that the case is ‘Mexico’s number one priority right now.’

The Charrettes concluded the statement with, “There are no words to express our grief – but we wanted you to know what happened because the truth, as horrible as it may be, is important. Thank you for all your support and everything you have done and continue to do.”

Axel’s father owns Peak to Peak Bicycles in Ridgeway, while his mother is a software engineer and competitive bike racer with a blog called Velo Mom.

      Part of being a caregiver is protecting those who can’t protect themselves. She deserves to be charged as well because she willingly invited the danger in, and then failed to at least attempt to stop the threat.

      When I was in high school, a guy tried to break into the home where I was babysitting two young girls. Their bedrooms were right next to the front door that he was actively trying to kick in, but I went and locked them in the bathroom and I stayed right outside the door, ready for a fight. Thankfully he didn’t make it inside, but even at 16 years I knew not to leave them to fend for themselves…

      One can’t be sure how much effort the Charrettes put into finding a suitable babysitter – perhaps they conducted interviews or even hired the girl from an agency; whatever the case may be, it would have been difficult to find out that this girl had a druggie for a boyfriend. It’s one thing to hire someone to watch kids when you live in the area ( and possibly know the babysitter’s family ) and another when you’re out of the country and looking for a suitable sitter. Obviously the sitter bears almost all of the blame in this situation for her boyfriend’s actions ( not a random attacker ) and her failure to protect the children she was responsible for.

      Overall, a sad story that won’t do much for Mexico’s tourism industry.

      When I was 13 I lived in Johannesburg, South Africa (back in 1983 when apartheid was still the law), one night while I was babysitting a little boy, the maid and her boyfriend got into a giant row. Things were already tense as she had been dismissed that day and they were moving out of the maids quarters on the back side of the house. It got really hairy and we hid in the water closet in the spare room (there were three locked doors between us and them this way) while we waited for the police to show up. The parents of the boy and my parents were at a function and couldn’t be reached, it was scary as hell but I never even once considered leaving him alone so I could protect my own ass!

      I agree to an extent, and am hesitant to say this because certainly the parents shouldn’t be blamed. But I don’t understand trusting a stranger to watch my child, period. Even with a nanny service, and especially when one is out of the country. I understand wanting to do something without the kids while on such a vacation, but in that case, I would hire someone I knew (a teen family member, or my regular babysitter) to come with me for just such an occasion…or I would simply accept that it would be strictly a family vacation with no adult outings. It wouldn’t be worth the risk to me to hire a stranger in a country where the laws may not be as strict as those in my own country regarding background checks and such.

      Actually, meth can – it does have a reputation of being able ‘open the gates of hell on earth’ for quite a valid reason. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was on a meth-induced psychosis.

      I agree, this is a tragedy, but who hires an unknown person in a foreign country to care for their very young child? I fell like people need to do better cost/benefit analyses of the decisions they make. Taking a babisitter you know on vacation: $2,500 Your child not being killed by the drug crazed boyfriend of some rando cheap labor you hired: Priceless.

      Absolutely agree with this statement. I know someone personally that has been destroyed by this drug. It seems to morph people’s sense of reality. I’m sure once the guy came down he probably won’t be able to easily comprehend what he as actually done but by then it is just simply too late. Heck even that K-12 synthetic marijuana stuff causes people to behave similarly too. I know a guy who shot his head off with a shotgun while on that stuff. Bad news.

      I’m glad that they charged the stupid teenage girl with murder, too. My sixteen-year-old niece is a self-centered little shit sometimes, but if anyone threatened to hurt her siblings or my kids, drug-crazed or not, she would be locking the KIDS in the bathroom and grabbing the nearest object she could use as a lethal weapon to protect them. In fact, most of the teens I’ve encountered claim that they can’t stand little kids, but if someone was to threaten those same kids, they would be the first to say, “Aw, fuck no!” and do what they could to protect them.

      But I can only speak for my part of the US–I don’t know how it is elsewhere.

      I’m not going to say anything about the ‘Parents’ judgement in having some stranger watch their kids. I’m sure they are suffering enough. I will say that I hope they put the baby sitter and her boyfriend in a nice mexican prison for the rest of their worthless lives.

      Read her blog. There were signs before hand that they should have left the country while they could. Both children caught E coli. It seems they were on a “grand adventure”.

      I think she should be charged, but not for the reason of her locking herself in the bathroom. Expecting a 17 yr old to do anything but protect themselves is a little idealistic. Teens by nature are narcissistic and self serving (obviously this can vary individually). But for being ignorant in the fact of 1. Telling this psycho where she was located when taking care of children, and 2. Letting him in and not calling the police immediately. Unfortunately, this teen obviously wasn’t very emotionally stable if she dated a man like this in the first place, and I feel horrible for the parents. I have no doubt as a parent if I knew my babysitter was dating a drug crazed psycho I would not be having her sit for me.

      I can’t agree with holding the 16yr-old accountable for the death. The main parties responsible is the murderer and the parents who left their children alone in a foreign country with a person they knew nothing about. Unless there’s evidence that the 16yr-old took part in the murder, she’s just as much a victim of this circumstance. It’s very easy to criticize her for not putting her life on the line for the kids, but I would remind you that she is 16(practically a child). Bottom line, don’t give adult responsibilities to a teenager then act surprised when they don’t live up to your standards.

I’m sorry but the parents are partially responsible as well. It sounds like they found this bitch on craigslist, or perhaps on the side of the road; “Will Sit for Money/Drugs”. Seriously, you don’t let just ANYONE watch your kids, especially in a country where they don’t give a shit about anyone, not even their own citizens. I’d never trust a sophomore to watch a toddler, let alone a toddler PLUS another child. What the fuck were they thinking letting a high school stranger watch their kids? smdh

      I live in Mexico, and what isn’t reported here is that the little boy was raped before being thrown into the pool to drown. And just to bring a bit of relief to all of you, in Mexico police still beat and torture, so this animal of a man I am sure got a good beating to get him to confess.
