Ex-Boyfriend Killed With Hatchet During Assault

Amarillo, TX — Investigators say a man accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend at her Amarillo apartment has died after a struggle with her current boyfriend.

Police were called to a residence in Amarillo early yesterday morning by a woman reporting her ex-boyfriend had entered her home and assaulted her. Police are not naming the woman at this time, but say she had been involved with the man for about a year and a half. The two had apparently separated at least 6 months prior to the alleged attack.

Police reports indicate that around 3 a.m., Christopher Mooney, 37, entered the woman’s residence and grabbed her by the throat and attempted to drag her out of the apartment.

The woman’s uncle, 52 year old William Martin, who lives in an apartment adjacent to the woman, heard her screams and came running. Luckily, the woman’s current boyfriend, who lives with her, also came to the rescue. When Mooney refused to free the woman, he grabbed the first weapon he could find and struck Mooney with it to get him to release the woman.

The ex wasn’t as lucky – the weapon was a roofing hatchet that split his chest open.

According to Mr. Martin, Mooney staggered back out of the house and onto the driveway. At that point, Martin reportedly went over to Mooney to check on him and wake him up. “His eyes were sunk back in his head,” Martin said. “And I knew he was dead.”

Police searched Mooney’s car and found two guns in it. Reports also state that he has a “long criminal history” which mostly consists of drug charges. No speculation on why the ex went to the woman’s house or whether drugs/alcohol might have been involved. According to a police source that situation is “still being investigated” and at this time neither the woman or her current boyfriend have been arrested.

True he had issues but when I knew the guy he was good friend who would do anything for you. He took care of his family and he never showed any indication of being a lunatic and I just thought that should be noted. I’ve read your comments here and your points are well taken. It’s difficult to say how your friend got so derailed, but you’re right that it is a shame. I certainly don’t think he deserved death….I reserve that for the pedophiles, rapists and serial murderers out there.

As for Chris…well, everyone has different abilities when it comes to coping with the shit life throws at us. That one person cracks up and another stays strong isn’t a character flaw. It’s just the way each of us is wired. I’m sorry you lost a friend.

I know what you mean, I went to school with someone that we all thought was just punk, pure UK style 70′s punk, turns out that he was hiding his Aryan side. Not long after we graduated high school (1988) he was part of the group that attacked, beat, kicked and killed Mulugeta Seraw here in Portland. An Ethiopian going to Portland State University. Don’t mind the animosity – understand that 99% of the time, when some friend/family member turns up here to defend a criminal, they are completely blind to reality and adamant about the (alleged) criminal’s innocence, or tell us we’re all evil/bastards/etc., or we don’t know the whole story and the news is always lies, etc. And of course they never have any evidence for their claims, if they even bother to explain why their family member/friend is innocent, or the charges unjustified.

It’s so fucking predictable that the members have come to refer to them collectively as “Tard Defenders.” So the second you spoke up in his defense that’s what everyone pegged you for. (They also generally can’t spell or communicate for shit, which should’ve alerted our first responders that we were dealing with a normal, intelligent person.) But I think most of them have caught your point – you only knew him as a decent guy and the news blindsided you, eliciting an adverse reaction from you to our commentary.

I imagine that most of the perps that’ve been featured here are decent to someone in their lives; it always comes as a shock to find out someone you admired/respected had a side to them you didn’t see. I guess just be thankful that you found out via the news rather than being on the receiving end of that revelation. Sorry you lost a friend.

Thanks I do appreciate that. My friend much like myself was far from innocent but I never thought he was capable of the violent nature of his crime. I think I’m more shocked by that than I am over his demise. I knew him as a easy going guy who was fun to hang out with and that’s how I want to remember him. My time on this sight started out kinda harsh but a lot of the comments I received after my small rant I feel were heartfelt and sincere so I don’t have any hard feelings over the matter.

Its really disheartening to think that someone could change so drastically in such a small period of time.
