Upper Darby, PA – Three teens have been arrested after police say they kidnapped a woman in front of a bar on Christmas, then drove around raping her for five hours.
“These guys treated her like dirt,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. “They were total animals as far as I’m concerned.”
The 22-year-old victim was sitting in her Jeep Cherokee in the parking lot of George’s Water Ice waiting for her boyfriend to arrive. At about 11:40 p.m., Kevin Jones, Kewon Matthews and Brehon Rawlings forced their way into her vehicle at gunpoint and made her get into the backseat.
For the next five hours, police say the men beat the woman and took turns forcing her to perform sex acts on them, even though she was repeatedly vomiting on them. After robbing her of her Coach purse, wallet, car stereo, cellphone, camera, GPS, ruby ring, diamond necklace, bracelet and her insurance and registration paperwork, they threw her keys under the car and fled on foot.
The woman waited a few minutes before retrieving her keys and driving to her boyfriend’s house. They both arrived at the police station around 5:30 a.m. and reported the incident. Not long after police were briefed of the woman’s kidnapping, rape and robbery, a call came in from a woman reporting that a teenager staying at her house was bragging about having a gun.
Responding police found four teens at the residence. Two were the caller’s sons, one was 17-year-old Kevin Jones, who was staying at the house so he could attend Upper Darby High School, and the fourth was 17-year-old Kewon Matthews, who said he was a friend of Jones’.
While in the home, police noticed a Coach handbag containing the rape victim’s belongings. The victim was brought to the house where she identified both Jones and Matthews as two of her attackers. After the teens were arrested, Rawlings was identified and found hiding in his home’s bathtub on Wednesday.
All three teens are facing 42 criminal charges that include rape, kidnapping, robbery, carjacking and theft. Rawlings is also facing a gun charge. All three are being held on $500,000 and have been charged as adults.
“These guys are truly, truly animals,” said Chitwood, who also referred to the teens as scumbags. “This was a sadistic crime, the kind of crime that shakes up the human consciousness.”
The victim was taken to the hospital to be examined and was treated for minor head injuries after being hit with the gun, which turned out to be a BB gun.
