Man Arrested After Setting Another Man On Fire At Gas StationLAS VEGAS, NV – A man has been charged with attempted murder after he set fire to a man who was harassing him at a Las Vegas gas station.

According to police, Theodore Bejarano was inside Cricle K store drinking on Oct 10. The clerk told him he was not allowed to loiter inside the store and asked him to leave. At around the same time, 61-year-old Patrick Newell had arrived at the store to get gas. After paying, he left the store only to encounter a drunken Bejarano leaning against his truck. Bejarano asked for a ride, but  Newell refused, telling him he was driving a business vehicle.

Bejarano allegedly didn’t like that answer and kept bugging Newell to the point that Newell threatened to cut Bejarano with a pocketknife if he didn’t leave him alone. But instead of cutting the man, Newell went back inside the store and told the clerk that he was being harassed at the pumps and to call police. When he returned to his truck, Bejarano continued harassing him.

In response, Newell removed the pump from his gas tank and sprayed gasoline in Bejarano’s face. The man walked away but approached Newell again while complaining about his shirt being ruined. Newell sprayed Bejarano a second time while also knocking him to the ground. When Bejarano approached Newell yet again, Newell pulled out a lighter and used it to set Bejarano’s shirt on fire.

According to the police report, Bejarano began screaming and stripped off his shirt and shorts while a witness instructed him to stop, drop and roll. Bejarano was taken to the hospital and treated for second degree burns to 10 to 15 percent of his body, mostly to his left side and arms. He also suffered heat damage to his lungs after inhaling the flames.

Newell was arrested and charged with attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon, battery with use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm, and assault with a deadly weapon.

I knew a guy who did this to someone harassing him at a gas pump. He didn’t set the guy on fire, as the guy took off running immediately after he was doused with gas. On the flipside, I had a friend who got his ass kicked pulling this stunt. As he drove by a group of black men hanging out on a street corner, his passenger stuck their head out of his window and yelled, “BLOOD SUCKING CREATURES OF THE NIGHT!”

After pulling into a nearby convenience store for gas, the passenger went in to pay while my friend waited for the pump to be turned on. To his surprise, the group of men they had yelled at were not real happy about being called vampires, and had followed them to the store. My friend, who was scared shitless, pulled out the gas pump and threatened to spray them if they did not back off. Undeterred by the threat, or knowing it wasn’t on, one of the men took the gas pump out of my friend’s hands and proceeded to beat him over the head with it.

I’ll never forget when he told me why he had stitches in his head, and how mad he got when I couldn’t stop laughing.

I don’t think involuntary empathy with Jonathan Storm is a really appropriate punishment for belligerent inebriation, but I’m having trouble summoning much sympathy for Teddy’s plight. I wonder if he’ll sober up after this? Who am I kidding, why even pose that question?

Pat should’ve stayed put inside the first time he ran afoul of the guy, though. It would be awesome if we could soak every asshole we run into in gasoline and set them on fire, but that wouldn’t really work very well with a society based on law and all that. Way to transform yourself from a victim into a criminal, fool.

    Got a light?

Well there are no gas pumps in prison. Please pass the salt.

  • Wolf_of_Mars

Hmmm… He repeatedly tries to start shit with someone who’s obviously NOT in the mood to deal with it.
Result: The object of his harassment drenches his body with a gallon of Arabian blue, then tosses in a lit Zippo. He ends up with his scared, shock-filled carcass sprinting off to nowhere while trying to rid himself of his HOT new yellow jacket.
Did that pretty much well sum it up?

  • Sam

That shit just wouldn’t fly here in the UK. It’d be cheaper to hire a Colombian hitman with the price of gas sky high and still climbing.

  • ShelbySP

Yep, I can’t summon much sympathy for the guy. You have to be pissing someone off pretty bad when they spray you with gasoline from a pump that’s charging their card.

Don’t these fuck stick a hoy’s have CCTV footage of the alleged incident? Why would that video even be there if there isn’t even a video? I hate that shit.

  • Sam

For info and to garner sympathy for my poor wallet: equivalent of $8.54 per gallon for the bog-standard ordinary unleaded. No wonder us Europeans are so obsessed with the mpg performance of our cars, huh?

    DAYUM! He WAS warned…

I’d hate to wake up after that hangover o-O

Note to self, if this situation happens to me, drive drunk 20 miles into desert and leave him.

Wish we didn’t dump billions into OUR failed energy initiatives over here!

The price of fuel in Britain is completely engineered; Britain’s an oil exporter.

Don’t really feel sorry for Toasty. I mean, after you get doused with gasoline…take a hint.

  • Sam

I know – don’t get me started. I just about tear my hair out whenever the oil companies put out yet another press release about how many billions in profit they made, whilst simultaneously saying how tough they have it. Meanwhile us gimps can’t afford to get to work.

  • http://profiles.google.com/coldlogic HAL 9000

I think your government cashes in more billions from oil than the oil company does. And here in the States BP isn’t exactly corporate gold.

  • Sam

True, tax is a massive chunk of our fuel costs. But at least the government will look at the state of the economy in general and decide to postpone yet another fuel tax increase. The oil companies just keep upping the prices when the average price for a vat of oil increases, but then doesn’t decrease them when the average comes down again.
Jeezus. I’ve just realised that when i first moved to the UK i balked at paying 69 pence per litre – we are now at £1.40 per litre. Double the price in the space of 9 years. I knew i should have fucking married an oil baron.

  • Gee

That brings me to, “God looks after fools and drunks” Dumb Ass is lucky to be alive. Newell just took it a little too far.

  • Pipsmom06

It concerns me that my first thought was, “oh my gosh, gas is 4.50 a gallon right now! He should have found a cheaper self defense method!”

  • AliceinChainsman =]

    lol…

  • Abroad

    It wasn’t his card……

  • Abroad

If it was a company vehicle, it was probably a company fuel card, as well.
