LAS VEGAS, NV – A man has been charged with attempted murder after he set fire to a man who was harassing him at a Las Vegas gas station.
According to police, Theodore Bejarano was inside Cricle K store drinking on Oct 10. The clerk told him he was not allowed to loiter inside the store and asked him to leave. At around the same time, 61-year-old Patrick Newell had arrived at the store to get gas. After paying, he left the store only to encounter a drunken Bejarano leaning against his truck. Bejarano asked for a ride, but Newell refused, telling him he was driving a business vehicle.
Bejarano allegedly didn’t like that answer and kept bugging Newell to the point that Newell threatened to cut Bejarano with a pocketknife if he didn’t leave him alone. But instead of cutting the man, Newell went back inside the store and told the clerk that he was being harassed at the pumps and to call police. When he returned to his truck, Bejarano continued harassing him.
In response, Newell removed the pump from his gas tank and sprayed gasoline in Bejarano’s face. The man walked away but approached Newell again while complaining about his shirt being ruined. Newell sprayed Bejarano a second time while also knocking him to the ground. When Bejarano approached Newell yet again, Newell pulled out a lighter and used it to set Bejarano’s shirt on fire.
According to the police report, Bejarano began screaming and stripped off his shirt and shorts while a witness instructed him to stop, drop and roll. Bejarano was taken to the hospital and treated for second degree burns to 10 to 15 percent of his body, mostly to his left side and arms. He also suffered heat damage to his lungs after inhaling the flames.
Newell was arrested and charged with attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon, battery with use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm, and assault with a deadly weapon.
I knew a guy who did this to someone harassing him at a gas pump. He didn’t set the guy on fire, as the guy took off running immediately after he was doused with gas. On the flipside, I had a friend who got his ass kicked pulling this stunt. As he drove by a group of black men hanging out on a street corner, his passenger stuck their head out of his window and yelled, “BLOOD SUCKING CREATURES OF THE NIGHT!”
After pulling into a nearby convenience store for gas, the passenger went in to pay while my friend waited for the pump to be turned on. To his surprise, the group of men they had yelled at were not real happy about being called vampires, and had followed them to the store. My friend, who was scared shitless, pulled out the gas pump and threatened to spray them if they did not back off. Undeterred by the threat, or knowing it wasn’t on, one of the men took the gas pump out of my friend’s hands and proceeded to beat him over the head with it.
I’ll never forget when he told me why he had stitches in his head, and how mad he got when I couldn’t stop laughing.
