Pittsburgh, PA — Last week we reported on the juvenile who sucker punched a Kansas City Metro bus driver (he was eventually caught and charged with assault) and now we have a similar incident out of Pittsburgh, where a 15-year-old was arrested after surveillance cameras captured him sucker punching a teacher in a downtown alley.

Jim Addlespurger is a 50-year-old English teacher at Creating and Performing Arts School. Last Thursday, in the middle of the day, he was walking down an alley when he passed by six teens coming from the opposite direction. As the surveillance video below shows, one of the teens steps in Addlespurger’s path and then sucker punches him in the face.

No one was in the other’s way, and no words had been exchanged before the cowardly assault. “It appears to be a random act but this juvenile has a track record, already has, for example, a probation officer,” said Joanna Doven, spokeswoman for Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.

After eating the teen’s fist, Addlespurger can be seen toppling to the ground, striking his face and head on the curb while the teens nonchalantly walk away, laughing. The attack happened in front of a surveillance camera as well as a group of people sitting outside a coffee shop who rush over to help the man off the ground.

After the video was released to the public, the teen was identified and brought to police by his parents. On Tuesday, the unidentified teen was charged with simple assault and probation violation. Police are not releasing his name because he is a juvenile but it has been reported that he’s a student at Letsche Alternative Education Center. None of the other teens seen with him in the video will be charged.

As for Addlespurger, he was recovering from the attack at home and hasn’t made any detailed statements regarding the attack. “I think the video pretty much speaks for itself,” he said. Addlespurger also plays blues guitar for the Jimmy Adler Band. He posted on Facebook that he plans to play a concert Oct. 20 and that he appreciated all of the messages he has received.

“Alternative Education Center”? Well, if that isn’t a eufemism, i don’t know what is.

  • What the hell is up with people randomly hitting people? that’s assault brotha!

  • come_and_see

What a bunch of amateurs. If you’re going to knock somebody out do it where there’s no cameras and nobody around. Plausible deniability.

  • OutOfBubbleGum

Kids today are too eager. Please, for God sakes, slow your arm down when you try to show your misspelled fingers tattoo to the first English teacher you meet.

  • Pipsmom06

It has been a little while since I went to nursing school, but if I recall correctly, you can die from striking your head on a hard object such as a curb. Why is this little shit only being charged with simple assault?

  • JohnQknowitall

The fact that the victim is a teacher is incidental. The fact that there is a victim because of that punk is maddening.

  • JohnQknowitall

Why don’t you ask a student who attends the Alternative Education Center what “euphemism” means and try not to smirk at his response?

  • How is it simple assult? maybe bc he only used his fist and no a weapon? kid sounds like a fuckin lil punk to me

  • newstarshipsmell

Uh, probably because said student would just stare at her blankly for a moment, then shank her.

  • I just asked mine and none of them knew what it meant, but they did ask me to define it. As if now I haven’t been shanked.

  • newstarshipsmell

    of 😉

  • Sam

But then how could you post about it on Facebook?

  • midniteshadows

I think it’s because the teacher didn’t die. There have been a few cases on the news where something similiar to this has happened and the person charged with simple assault. Later, when the victim died, the charges changed to murder. Still sucks no matter what.

  • LeaveMeBe

Remember back in the day if anyone sucker punched someone else, they were treated like a pariah? Their friends didn’t egg them on or laugh, they called them out for being a coward and no one wanted to be around them. I do not like this new game, Sam I am.

  • Evan Oswald

a friend of mine punched a man and he died. google: dykas punch hockey.

  • Evan Oswald

wish i was there for this. hope i am there for the next one. i’d be on their ass like shit out of a politian’s mouth

  • Eliza Berntsen

Don’t they always film their assaults anyway?

  • Wolf_of_Mars

Did they put down the finger paints first?

  • Abroad

You are a brave woman; but thank you for putting this to the test and reporting back!

  • JohnQknowitall

It is indeed sad that your comment rings true. It is sadder that some adult figure who should be minding this child’s (yes child) activities is allowing him to not only live the stereo type, but by doing so perpetuating a life that will know no peace. This may be the last best chance to save this kid and society from his current self.

  • You’re welcome. 🙂 As of 14:13, I still remain un-shanked!

  • Andyman

Yeah and he got 5 years in prison. Which I think is fucked up. So if you meant to hurt but not kill them, their life is only worth 5 years. People get more than that for selling pot. Which is crazy to me. Here is a link to the story Evan mentioned in case you’re lazy. 🙂

  • tinalib13

We have “alternative education classes”. That’s for the kids who aren’t in emotional support but refuse to do any work.

  • Athena

A sentence is not meant to reflect the worth of the victim. Rather, it is designed to loosely correlate with likelihood to re-offend, which intent plays a major factor in.

Yes, people get more for selling pot. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

(Residents of Washington, Oregon and Colorado: Please vote “Yes” on your state’s marijuana legalization initiative, on the ballot this November. There’s a lot more than the Presidency at stake.)

  • I teach in an Alternative Ed HS. Oddly most of them come here by choice because our public school system sucks so bad.

  • EveryVillainIsLemons

I’m glad that his parents turned him in. Maybe there’s hope for that cowardly shit.

  • tundratot

Amazing how clean and pretty that alley is. Are those kids students in the school where the teacher works?

  • Billy Mexico

To be honest, I would be fine with this bus drivers son finding this kid, sticking his mouth on a curb, and stomping on the back of his head. Like the writer says, as a kid I did some fucked up things, but if any of my friends did something like that, I would have knocked every one of his teeth out.

  • Pipsmom06

I just think when you hit someone in the head hard enough to stun them, it is attempted murder. Just because some morons don’t know what kind of damage a good whack to the head can do doesn’t mean the damage can’t be done. Ignorance is no excuse.

  • Pipsmom06

This is not this guys first offense though. He may be a teen, but that does not mean he isn’t a little psycho who will, I guarantee, reoffend at some point in his life

  • Athena

Yep. But, legally, you can only justify so much of a sentence for hitting someone. I was simply clarifying the fact that sentences aren’t tied to victims’ worth. A life and well-being are priceless. There’s no way to capture that through the sentence of a convict.

  • Abroad

Do you think any of them will ever use the word?

  • These kids need their asses beat! They are out of control.

  • I do find that my students start speaking much better by the second semester. It’s like they practice. LOL

As to your question I’m not sure. I’m certain that they won’t use it anytime soon but I believe the majority will retain the meaning and examples that were provided so I count that as a win. Hopefully as they mature and their vocabulary (hopefully) broadens they will use that word and many more. *fingers crossed*

  • velvetjoneslives

Yep. It’s high time we bring back judicial corporal punishment. Let see how tough these little punks think they are when they’re tied to a tressel in town square, facing 20 or 30 lashes with cane. I sure that will dramatically reduce the incidents such as this.

  • newstarshipsmell

Well anyways, I hope you realize I was 0% serious. I attended several alternative schools, after failing/dropping out of my local high school my junior year. And I didn’t get my GED until I was 30.

  • I didn’t take you seriously man! I was curious if any of them did know what it meant and was saddened that none did. 🙁

Did you really not get your GED until 30? I would have never guessed. Goes to prove that completing HS doesn’t mean your a genius and getting a GED definately doesn’t mean you’re dumb.

  • This kid needs a good FACE-SITTING by yours truly!

  • newstarshipsmell

The only reason I got it was because it was a requirement for USN enlistment. I had to jump through hoops just to get in, and apparently they’re only accepting HSDs these days. I actually failed part of it the first time and had to retake it – there’s a rather amusing story there but I’d rather not tell it publicly. 🙂

  • ultracreep

This is very true. I dropped out and got a GED myself, went on to nursing school and graduated with honors. *pats self on back* Now, onward to a masters degree! *fwee* (that’s the sound of my party noisemaker.)

  • JGo555

    Another douchecunt.

  • midniteshadows

I concur. A perfect example is “The Concussion Rule” for school football players in the state of MN. – not sure about the other states. Kids involved in football have a baseline test of cognitive/reflex ability. When a concussion is suspected, they test the kids and compare it to the baseline. Emergency room Doctors have also had an inservice about delayed concussion symptoms – which my son currently suffers from.(And he had on a top rated helmet – the kind that engulfs the head with airbag type padding.) He was symptomatic of a mild concussion. Come Friday morning at 10 am – we took him to the ER. Mild concussion turned into a moderate concussion – constant headache, nausea, etc. If he is still symptomatic by Wednesday an MRI will be done. Needless to say – he’s not playing the rest of the season.

It’s unfortunate that our laws haven’t caught up with what medicine is finding out about head injuries.

Not only that, but a blow to the head causing unconciousness coupled with hitting the head on pavement is even more damaging.

I also believe that when you head stomp a person, it should be considered attempted murder as well.
