Teacher Of The Year Charged With Sexual Assault Of StudentWEST ORANGE, NJ – Police have charged a former Essex County Teacher of the Year with sexual assault after they say she had an ongoing sexual relationship with one of her 15-year-old students.

On August 31, 33-year-old Erica DePalo was arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Police say she was having sex with a 15-year-old male student she taught in her honors English class at West Orange High School.

Prosecutors say the sexual relationship began in June and lasted until sometime in August. DePalo, who is also the school’s junior varsity tennis coach, is currently free on $100,000 bail. Depalo was in court yesterday where she pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against her. She is scheduled to be back in court on October 22.

DePalo was suspended as a teacher at West Orange High School, where she taught English and Honors English since 2003.  The West Orange School District superintendent released a statement regarding Depalo’s arrest and suspension, saying, “The district has taken strong action by suspending the employee immediately and indefinitely. The school district will cooperate with the prosecutor’s office in every way.”

DePalo, who is single and has no children, was named Essex County’s teacher of the year in 2011. She made a video after receiving the award where she stated, “I always say that I don’t have any children to go home and take care of, but every morning and every day that I go to school I have 110 children that are very near and dear to my heart.” And, apparently, one near and dear to her vagina.

On the New Jersey Department of Education website, DePalo can be seen proudly holding her award. In the bio section it says that DePalo is the ninth grade Small Learning Community Coordinator and is working under a $2.5 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education designing curriculum for a newly developed Freshman Seminar course.

She was presented with a commendation from the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders where she said, “I am merely a representative of all the hardworking dedicated teachers, especially those with whom I work at West Orange High School … teachers who are committed to their students, who consistently advocate for their students, and who exceedingly go above and beyond their everyday duties and job descriptions.” No kidding.

And before anyone asks, “Where were these teachers when I was growing up?” The answer is that they were at your school, they were just having sex with the good-looking students.

Let me guess, she’s going to blame it on hormones or being bipolar. Maybe she just wanted somebody to call her mommy.

  • tinalib13

How heartwarming. A role model for teachers everywhere. (sarcasm)

  • Wolf_of_Mars

…”who exceedingly go above and beyond their everyday duties.” Well, there’s no disputing that claim, now!

  • CT

The best looking teacher in my school closely resembled Pee Wee Herman.

  • newstarshipsmell

How did you manage to control yourself?

He bats for the other team. Even at a young age it wasn’t hard to figure out I had no chance. Took me years to move on.

  • AssWho?

Where the @#$! were these teachers when I was in High School? God damn kids these days have it so easy……

  • http://www.dreamindemon.com Morbid

I answered that question for you already, in the article.

I remember in high school we had a 25 year old math teacher that everyone thought was hot. Rumor has it she was diddling the star football player although to my knowledge she never got busted for it. I used to skip school on the day of her tests so I could make them up outside in the hall-way the next day so I could hear them go over the test answers. lol. Ah the good old days. But anyway, you’re right morbid, even in 1991 they were out there. Although they were fucking the (much more) popular boys. lol

Maybe she was making extra money as a summer sex ed tutor?

  • JohnQknowitall

So this is what happens when a student surpasses the gold star level?

Fifth teen years from when he’s still living in his parents basement playing Xbox 1440, his mother will turn to his father and say, “You know maybe we should have let him have his cake and eat it, too. He’d be out on his own with a woman that could support him with good benefits.”

In the news today, a ninth grade student was arrested out side the school gym. Police accused him of ticket scalping for selling season school dance tickets to unsuspecting students at below face value. Screaming at the top of his lungs while being dragged away to the county jail, students, teachers, and administrators could hear him yelling, “I don’t need the Dam tickets. My GF is in jail.”

  • newstarshipsmell

That’s hardly gonna stop us from still asking it in disbelief…

  • Sam

Teacher of the year? Isn’t that an award that’s voted for by the students?

  • Athena

A lot about the teacher. Not a lot about the relationship, or how it was discovered. Interesting.

  • newstarshipsmell

She’s not that hot, so who cares?

  • Athena

There’s been a bit of a rash, lately, of prosecutors who pursue charges of this particular nature without solid evidence. Usually, we hear something about how they were caught, or whether the minor is cooperating, etc. The lack of detail makes me wonder.

    So there.

  • David

    Disagreeing with you here, Sir.

  • newstarshipsmell

That she isn’t that hot, or that anyone cares? Because, either way, I was just joking around and teasing Athena.

Trust me, I’m always curious to know all the details when it comes to loose female teachers, regardless of whether they’re hot, plain, or downright fugly.

  • Athena

I believe he finds her purdy.

  • newstarshipsmell

At 15, I probably would have too.

  • JGo555

FAIL @DreaminDemon:disqus . WHere is the sexual harrassing comment you always make about banging THIS chick.

  • JGo555

YES. Mrs. Torres won it because of my aggressive vote. No, she never “did” me and thanks to her you are reading this in English.

  • http://www.dreamindemon.com Morbid

She doesn’t seem crazy, not is she particularly attractive. She just seems desperate, and I loathe desperation.

  • JGo555

So apparently you DO have standards…

  • onlyme356

Maybe it’s time to start having workshops with real life situations for these teachers. Obviously they all know they’re never supposed to get involved with students, that goes without saying. But maybe it would benefit teachers to be thoroughly trained for certain circumstances involving student/teacher conduct. Or do you think these cases are isolated to mental illness?

I wonder if the predator teachers would go after the quiet loner kids (because they would be quiet about it and have no one to brag to) I thought the popular jocks would be bragging and high fiving all their mates about it, and they’d get caught that way.

I think we just didn’t have social media back then really. From the DD stories I’ve read it seems like the ones that are sought out are primarily the ones from a broken home, missing one or more parents. Easy prey that way..
