Teen Smiled As He Described Beating His Mother To DeathHENDERSONVILLE, TN — Police say that a teenager accused of murdering his mother not only smiled as he confessed, but that he told them he was smiling as he beat her to death.

The 15-year-old has been accused of beating his mother to death with a blunt object before trying to burn the house down with his 16-year-old brother still inside.

The older brother says that after a smoke alarm woke him up just after midnight Saturday morning, he ran to check on his mother, 46-year-old Melanie Davis. He would find her beaten to death in her bed. The boy ran from the home and went to a neighbor for help.

Dispatcher: “You need police, fire or medical?”
Neighbor: “I need both. The neighbor came across the street saying his mom is dead in the bed and it looks like a fire in the game room.”
Dispatcher: “Now is she for sure dead? Or do they think that?”
Neighbor: “I don’t know. I’m not going in the house until someone gets here. The 16-year-old son come running across the street crying and the alarm is going off in the house.”

The boy told responding police that he lived at the home with his mother and his 15-year-old brother who was missing. Davis was a single mother who had been raising her two sons alone after losing her husband to Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2007.

Police began looking for the younger teen by tracking his cell phone and found him at around 6 a.m. walking down the street with a backpack seven miles away. Sheriff Sonny Weatherford says that he admitted to killing his mother and smiled as he made the confession. He also told investigators that he was smiling as he murdered his mother.

Weatherford described the boy as “scary” and has shown no remorse for the murder of his mother, nor has he provided a motive. The boy doesn’t have a criminal record and his teachers at Station Camp High School say he was just a typical teenager.

The teen is currently being held in a Sumner County juvenile detention center. Because of his age, his name has not been released to the public. He has a detention hearing today where Assistant District Attorney Tara Wyllie says she will request that the teen be held indefinitely pending the outcome of the case. According to prosecutors, they will be filing a motion asking that the teenager be tried as an adult and that his case be transferred to criminal court.

If being beat to death by your own son isn’t bad enough, she can’t even be buried. Davis has no other surviving family members and relatives in Austria can’t afford to foot the bill. Because of this, investigators are asking her friends and co-workers to help pay for her burial. Looking at her Facebook, it looks like Davis had recently started marathon running and biking. There are also some pictures of her two sons. They are just pics, but the youngest one doesn’t look quite right in the head.

As for the older brother, he is currently in the care of a neighbor. “He is doing as well as we can expect him to be,” Weatherford said. “His mother is a victim now and it’s caused by his younger brother. He’s kind of destroyed.”

This is just so fucking sad. He doesn’t look quite there in the pictures, you’re right on point.
I wonder if his brother even had a clue that he was capable of this? Although he doesn’t look all there, he also doesn’t look like some psycho in the making (and I’ve definitely seen some featured stories with psycho-in-the-making old pics).
Christ, seven miles away too?! As an aside, I was just back east and I can’t imagine walking seven miles in that morning humidity.

  • Andyman

My condolences to the son who has now lost all of his family members. How awful.

“DAM! This suck! Mom could’ve driven me here hours ago.”

  • Pyncky

Yes, the younger boy looks like he is out in his own galaxy somewhere. Sucks for the other son so badly.

  • OutOfBubbleGum

“walking down the street with a backpack”
Hopefully contain in his backpack is a full sheet of United States Forever stamps. Stamps needed by him to write letters to himself.

That poor woman! She lost her husband in 2007 after a debilitating illness, and then her younger son hauls off and brutally murders her, smiling the whole time. What the fuck is wrong with that ungrateful little assclown?

This town is just a few miles down the road from me. The boy did look “off.” I can’t quite put my finger on it.

judging by her facebook, the kids names are Josh and Zac…I’m gonna go with Josh as the killer. I have an instinct that he did it. he also commented on one of her pics, I think it may be him. He looks older to me.

Not being able to bury a loved one is such a nightmare- all you want to do is to lay them to rest in peace. Aren’t there any grants that could be issued to the son? I don’t know how it works in the US, but over here you get a grant from the local authority for a burial if you can’t afford it yourself/ have no relatives, etc.

Jesus. Any word on the condition of the house? To lose your entire family, then all of your things on top of it… talk about adding insult to injury.
I hope that neighbor is in a position to truly support the surviving victim. He’s going to need it. O.o

  • Chinchillazilla

    That poor older boy. :(

  • Gee

When a police officer describes a 15 year old as scary…. Then I just go to the worst in my imagination. I wonder what the hell happen to make this kid snap. No history of violence….. WOW

“Now is she for sure dead? Or do they think that?”

WTF? What did they expect him to do? Go back and check? That poor child. And he has no other family left. Hopefully someone steps up to help him if the neighbor can’t continue to keep him. What a mess.

I wonder if this is another case of a person on mood altering medication.

The worst part about it too is – the first thing he did upon waking up was check on his mother to make sure she got out, only to find her brutally murdered. Add to that his brother gone missing, only to find out later that he killed her and set the fire… I’m sure the older son will be blaming himself (undeservedly) for a long time that he wasn’t roused from sleep by his mother’s cries to intervene and prevent this tragedy.

I checked out her pics and the younger kid is a little heavy set, then checked her friends list and from the look of his picture, josh is the older brother.

Also speculation but, she has quite the shiner in one of the photos. Makes me wonder if she really did crash a bike.

I should have added that info. The house suffered little damage.

    Or didn’t plan for it.

    Well, that’s a small relief.

Honestly, you can take a look at her facebook and notice the fact that she has listed only ONE son on her facebook as her son and the other is not even on her friend list, and shows up only once on her fb in a picture looking very dejected and unhappy next to his brother who is obviously mom’s favorite, and see that the relationship between her and the son that slaughtered her was WAY OFF base. She is not innocent. When a kid is that angry and hateful, there is a reason why. Maybe he was abused by someone and told her and she either blamed him or did nothing. How does she have a son whose whole demeanor is so completely opposite, in a negative direction, from mr happy the other one, and according to her facebook she’s off running and hanging with the coworkers and just all over the place when her son needed serious help and attention? Her son that killed her it’s like he doesn’t exist at all on her fb page. She and the other older son talk back and forth enough on her facebook, but this son it’s like he’s wiped off the face of the earth. He’s like some kind of unwanted speck in her milk or something. And keep in mind mental illness is something people hide with a passion in families, so he could be having issues from long time and the family just glossed over it like nothing was happening, trying to save face rather than deal with it. What will probably not happen for this boy during trial is a serious analysis of whatever happened to him between birth and 15 years old to turn him into the monster he’s become.

What sites like this really help me realize is how many psychopaths and future evil nightmares of the worst kind about being abused and raped and molested and tortured and neglected into existence now, to become the future men my child will have to choose from and hope to avoid while dating. How many in my generation that are now out there preying on whoever seems weak and vulnerable and easy to take advantage of (like single mothers)? A lot of predators out there and they breed more. Most pedophiles and psychopaths are not caught, which means you and I are going to work with them, going out on dates with them, sitting next to them on the plane…it’s crazy. And America has way more than its fair share because the whole setup of life here is anti-family and abnormal, leaving lots of room for the perverse and dysfunctional to take root and spread like a virus. But don’t be fooled it’s in other countries too, just usually the culture is set up in such a way that because of these very dangers you don’t get tied up with people you don’t know, who your community and social circles don’t know, who no one has vouched for…this type of menace out there in the world waiting to eat you alive and destroy everything that means something to you is exactly why most business and personal relationships in the rest of the world are based on your personal history with a person and a social circle, and not on just paper credentials and impersonal things like credit history and contracts. Cause none of that will matter if you do a pre-nup or a business deal with a PSYCHO maniac or someone otherwise evil/mentally unstable.

What is EXTRA SCARY is that most of these monsters have sealed juvenile records that allow them to be simply unleashed with zero heads up upon the unsuspecting public. And these people in small town backwater places as well as the ignorant with multiple children they can’t support in depressed urban ghettoes seem to lead the list of insane crazies. The ones with more kids than they should have I can understand the overwhelming nature of that driving them over the edge especially since having the kids in the first place is likely driven by whatever makes them need whatever situation brought them to single parenthood in the first place, but what is it about small town America that drives women and men insane?

you might be jumping to conclusions with the facebook page. The younger son doesn’t seem to have a fb whereas the older son does, so that could explain why there’s no communication visible between them. Just because only the older son is listed as her son, doesn’t necessarily mean anything either…if the older boy sent her a We’re Related request, which she accepted, that will show up automatically. It doesn’t mean she’s deliberately rejecting one son.

  • DEADfairie

I have to agree…in the few public photos available of her youngest son on FB, he does not look completely right. The oldest is son is smiley and looks in the camera, the youngest has a very uncomfortable look about him. I feel for the 16 year old, I mean his mom was just murdered by his brother…geesh!

  • Texas Ranger

7 miles? that’s nothing. He was found at 6 AM. At that rate, he’s walking at a blistering speed of 1 mile per hour. I’m surprised his tennis shoes didn’t spontaneously combust from the heat at that pace.

  • onlyme356

“his teachers at Station Camp High School say he was just a typical teenager.” Of course they say that, the school will always wipe their hands clean whenever possible. Not saying it’s the school’s fault, but oftentimes these kids have problems and no one wants or cares to deal with it. On her FB page, the son who took her life looks very disengaged and withdrawn on his photos. Clearly he had some type of mental health problem.

  • onlyme356

I thought the same thing. What difference does it make whether he thinks she may or may not be dead, send the freakin paramedics, how are victims suddenly experts during a crisis like this?

well, you never know. i have a son who is 18 now, and i had to make him leave as soon as he turned 18..we did everything for him and no matter what was done, he was unbelievably cruel to us. he destroyed property, set fires, and much worse. it was for our own safety that we moved him out the day before he turned 18, because i couldnt take it anymore. we got him an apartment, helped him get a job..and within a month, he quit the job, and got evicted for starting fights and weirding out his landlady..he is living in a homeless shelter in the next city, and to be honest? i am GLAD. sometimes you just cant fix people, no matter how you try. and in our experience, the police refused to get involved, even when it involved him being cruel to animals and younger siblings. we did our best to keep him in various mental institutions, where they could watch him 24/7. the shitty thing is that he had ever chance his siblings had..my husband and i have been married 20 years, we own our own home, we dont beat/abuse our kids..he has just decided to wage war against everyone who wont give him his own way. to blame the mom in this is just wrong..sometimes, people are just plain evil.
