Troy, NY –  Police arrested 17-year-old Trinity Copeland for fatally shooting her father in the head with a rifle after the two argued over the unauthorized use of a credit card. In a statement to police, Copeland claims her father told her to do it.

Trinity’s father, 47-year-old Harland Copeland, had been drinking when he approached his daughter over some unauthorized debit card charges. Her father complained to the police about the charges, stating he knew where they were made but not who made them. He told Trinity police were going to look at the surveillance tapes from that day.

Knowing that they would see it was her that took the ATM card, Trinity confessed to the $154 in purchases. The reaction she received was a little more then she was bargaining for. She says her father told her that she could kill him or he’d kill her then himself.

“I was telling him I was sorry. I told him that I wanted to tell him before he saw it on video,” she said in the statement. “He was like, ‘Don’t want to hear it.’ He told me that he was gonna kill me. He was holding the gun and pointing it at me. My heart was pounding. He said after he killed me he was going to kill himself because he wasn’t going to go to jail for me misbehaving.”

She told police she pleaded with her father to change his mind but ultimatly it came down to either killing her father or him killing her. Trinity went on to say that he told her to put on some gloves and open a window to make it look like an intruder commited the crime.

“He was like, ‘I’m not going to say it again.’ I was like, ‘Why do I have to kill you, why do I have to kill you?’ He said either way he was going to die and he was giving me a way out.”

“He said do it,” she told police. “I told him that I loved him and that I was sorry. Then I did it. I shot him.”

Trinity shot her father as he lay on the couch, then grabbed her father’s phone to call the cops.  Trinity has been charged with second-degree murder. Troy Police Capt. John Cooney said they have no reason to doubt Copeland’s story and that the evidence, including her statement, supported a second-degree murder charge.

Come on Trinity, of all the times to obey your father you choose this one?

Father overreacting much? Why not whoop her ass, send her upstairs and make her wash some cars and mow some lawns to pay the charges back?

That would have made too much sense. It is sad that he felt his life was worth so little. However, maybe he didn’t want to watch the fruit of his loins downward spiral into a life of crime. This may not have been her first instance of stealing. I feel like there should be more to this story.

I too feel like there’s a LOT of background to this story that isn’t coming to the surface yet…

  • Sorry but if someone GAVE me the gun. I’d have just bolted.. not shot him, then called the police and cried.

  • I agree there is something more here. Because no daughter is just going to cap her father. And this seems like he went from 0 – kill all the people, pretty quickly.

Couldnt she just aim for his foot or leg or something……the guy was drunk c’mon, people say and do crazy things with alcohol involved

  • “Because no daughter is just going to cap her father.”

I would. But I agree, in this instance something seems off.

Soooo, who’s gonna pay the credit card bill?

  • Excellent.

  • hahahahahhaahh me too

  • I used to maybe agree with this sentiment but after reading DD for a while, I dunno. People have done much stupider things for much, much less.

What a crock o shit. I read more about this andshe said that her Father made her put on gloves first and also told her what to do to cover up the crime. Seriously? So, Dad was drunk but he was able to come up with this elaborate scheme? I’ve often thought that toddlers and drunks have the same mentality. Perhaps he was one of those folks that becomes smarter when he is drunk. Oh wait, that’s me. Never mind.

we could be nuclear physicists if we got drunk together. As a matter of fact, since I’m sober I had to look up how to spell physicist, but I’m sure I wouldn’t have that problem had I been shit faced.

Well then, we should try to invent something. Quite the team we shall be. Get on your drinking hat.

Ah….identity theft and murder by the age of 17!! Maybe someone will tell HER to shoot herself and she’ll follow those orders like she did her fathers (cough, cough). That’d be great! I live in New York and I’d LOVE to not have to pay taxes to feed and clothe her worthless ass in jail for the next 40 years.
