Here, Now – It’s been three years, but circumstances have us at a point in which I must beg for money start another fundraiser. I hate it, but I wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t necessary.
I have always tried to be transparent when it comes to DD and how haphazardly it is run. Those who know me personally, as well as those who have worked with me on the site, know that DD has been, and remains to be, a hobby of mine. It is not a source of income. Trust me when I say that had I wanted to start a site to make a living with, DD wouldn’t have been it. Running a crime news site like DD, in my experience, is the worst possible niche to get into if you are looking to make a living at it. Crime gets an audience, but it certainly does not pay.
If you do a Google search on “ads for news sites” you will see part of the problem. Basically, news sites have a hard time finding advertisers. But crime news is the WORST niche to get into if you want to make money with an independent web site. Luckily for you, our readers, I love posting the stories and I’m a glutton for punishment. While I would love for the site to generate massive amounts of cash to support my various drug habits, it never has and may not ever–at least not by running the kind of ads we do. Truth be told, advertisers just don’t know what the demographic of a crime site is, so they have no idea who they are selling to and we get stuck with generic ads with low payout.
Adding to the problem is the fact that we are often politically-incorrect and vulgar when dealing with heinous subject matter, making things 10 times worse on ourselves. But I refuse to change the site style or content as I would end up hating the site and would simply shut it down. I don’t employ pop-ups, pop-unders, sliders or those big-ass, forced splash screens that are normally seen on sites that have a hard time finding advertisers. We would make more if I did use them, but again, I would just end up hating visiting my own site. Remember the days of the talking Mucinex ads? Sure it paid more to run those, but Jesus Christ, all that does is keep me from wanting to come here and encourages people to turn on their ad-blockers or go somewhere else.
I’m not saying we don’t make money, as we do, but it’s usually just enough to cover server costs with some leftover, depending on the month, to stuff in the coffers used to cover the months we don’t make much at all. That’s worked pretty well until now. With the absence of Kniption and Jaded, myself and Pete are the only ones consistently putting up content. Pete never signed on to write multiple stories daily, and I can only do so many while also doing all the other mundane crap that goes along with being a site owner. As a result, the daily story count has been down for over a month and the meager amount we make off the ads have followed suit. It always takes time to get new writers on board and things will eventually get back to normal, as they always do, but that doesn’t help things right now, at this moment.
So for the third time in almost a decade (!) of operation, I am once again turning to you guys for help. Here is the link to our donation page that we normally do not advertise but is always there. If you have ever enjoyed the site and would like to show some extra appreciation, email us tit pics or donate some spare change. Trust me, I know shit is tough all over and some of you fans don’t have any change to spare. But for those of you who do, click that Donate Button below and give, man!
But wait! Aside from showing your appreciation and helping to keep the site running, I have added a little bonus for those of you who part ways with some of your dough to help a website.
Five of you will be receiving signed copies of Hugh Howey’s bestselling Wool Omnibus Edition, (our review) courtesy of bestselling author, friend and very cool guy, Hugh Howey. If you already own it, don’t let that hinder you. Just give your other copy to someone who hasn’t read the books or put the damn thing on Ebay after Hugh becomes a household name!
Five emails attached to the Paypal donation will be picked randomly so whether you donate $5 (thanks!) or $500 (come here and let me give you head) it will have no direct influence on who gets randomly picked for the books as the person picking (my kid) will have no idea how much anyone donated.
I am exploring other options to garner some cash flow so we can pay writers and possibly hire someone to focus solely on advertising/marketing and merchandise (if you know anyone interested and has some experience in that, send ‘em our way) and possibly even re-opening screamindemon.com. That site was our sister site that focused only on horror movies, books, videogames, etc. It was created to help carry DD because even with low traffic, it was still easier to generate an income with. I had to close it because of lack of help and the fact that the time I was spending on it was time I was not spending here on DD. But again, those are longterm options that do not help right here, right now and I wouldn’t even do this if I didn’t think it didn’t need to be done.
Again, thanks to everyone who has stuck it out with us over the last eight years. This isn’t the first time we have dwindled down to a two man crew, and it probably won’t be the last. But maybe this will give us a few months of breathing room and give us time to train the new wannabe writers. It should also help float us a bit while I figure out a way to generate enough money to pay the writers and hire some staff to help ensure I don’t ever have to resort to groveling again in the future.
