Recent Edinburg North HS Graduate Accused Of Molesting 11-Year-Old Boy

Edinburg, TX – A former football player for Edinburg North High School has been arrested and charged with child molestation after he was caught inside his car with a half-dressed 11-year-old boy.

Neighbors in a McAllen neighborhood said they’ve seen 18-year-old Joel Cuellar’s black Chevy Camaro parked in the Bicentennial Soccer Fields parking lot on multiple occasions, but never called police about it and never imagined what police say was happening inside.

One neighbor stated that she normally saw the car parked at night underneath a broken lamp post. That’s where a police officer found it parked Friday night around midnight. The officer observed that the windows were fogged up and decided to see what the occupants were up to.

As he approached the car, Cuellar stepped out and, according to the officer’s report, had to pull up his pants. Also inside the car was an 11-year-old boy, reportedly the little brother of Cuellar’s ex-girlfriend. A neighbor, who watched as the arrest unfolded, stated that Cuellar had to pull his pants up when he got out of the car, and that police had to wrap a towel around the 11-year-old boy’s waist.

Cuellar was arrested and charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child. He was placed in the Hidalgo County Jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond, which he posted Saturday morning.

If he’s convicted of the charges currently filed against him, he’s looking at anywhere from five to 99 years in prison. But police say the 11-year-old may have been sexually assaulted more than once. If that turns out to be the case, Cuellar could see his charges upgraded to continuous sexual abuse of a child and then be looking at a minimum of 25 years in prison if convicted.

Cueller graduated from Edinburg North High School where he was their quarterback. He’s currently listed on Briar Cliff University’s fall football roster at Sioux City, Iowa–but that might be changing soon.

“This is the first we’ve heard of the incident,”‘ said Briar Cliff Head Football Coach Tom Rethman. “We’ll obviously have to look into it and take appropriate action.”‘

As you would expect, a lot of comments on the articles I linked to have young people instructing others to mind their own business and to quit judging Cueller before all the facts come in. But come on, if anyone is deserving of judgement it’s a college student found parking at midnight with his ex-girlfriend’s 11-year-old brother who is wearing no pants.

I guess some people just don’t keep watch like we do. But when you think about it, maybe the families know each other and teh older boy was supposed to be coaching him or something. I can kind of see how that could happen. Unless I missed it, it doesn’t say what time it happened. If it were early evening, I guess it could have been under the guise of teaching football.

You obviously don’t understand how the law works then. Even if the police beat the man half to death, the charges would not be dropped. Why? Police testimony would not be questioned and the fact the child would likely be seen as a credible witness and his testimony would be enough for charges to remain and a conviction.

At worst, the police would face reprimand and would be told to step down or be fired.

Details emerge in former Edinburg North QB’s sex abuse case

After separating Cuellar and the boy early Friday morning, the officer asked the child if he was OK. The boy said he was, according to the complaint.

The officer turned his attention back to Cuellar, who was sweating and breathing heavily, the complaint states. The officer asked if he was nervous.

“Cuellar stated he was nervous and did not want to get in trouble,” the complaint states.

The officer asked why he would get in trouble.

“We are gay,” Cuellar responded, with hesitation, the complaint states.

Police say Cuellar told the officer he is 16 years old and the boy is 14 years old, the complaint states. Police later confirmed Cuellar is 18 and the boy is 11.

Cuellar told the officer he picked up the boy to take him to a movie, but they didn’t have enough money for tickets. They went to the park to “listen to music and talk” and had been there about 15 minutes before the officer arrived, the complaint states.

The boy told police that Cuellar is a friend of his and used to date his older sister, the complaint states. The boy said his parents let the former quarterback take him to the movies. The boy told police he was tired and took off his shirt because he was hot and fell asleep until he woke up when the officer shined a light at the Camaro.

A juvenile investigator later questioned the boy, who said he and Cuellar kissed and that the boy then performed oral sex on Cuellar in the car, the complaint states.

The boy “said that he cared about Joel a lot and that in the past three months this had (happened) three to four times already,” the juvenile investigator wrote in his narrative. The boy “became very emotional (crying) making it seem he had done something wrong. I told him that he had done nothing wrong.”

The boy’s mother arrived at the soccer fields and picked up her son.

Cuellar started at quarterback for the Edinburg North Cougars last season and had been accepted to play football at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, this fall.

University officials confirmed Monday that Cuellar is no longer welcome to attend the school.

“No, Joel Cuellar will not be a student at Briar Cliff University in the fall,” Sharisue Wilcoxon, vice president for enrollment management, said in a statement. “When university officials learned of these allegations, BCU rescinded all offers of admission.”
