Bodies Of Missing Sisters, Britny Haarup and Ashley Key, Found In Field

EDGERTON, MO – Police have found the bodies of two sisters, 19-year-old Britny Haarup and 22-year-old Ashley Key, who were reported missing from Haarup’s home on Friday.

Police were called by Haarup’s fiancé, Matt Meyers, after he came home Friday to find the sisters were not there and his 6- and 18-month old daughters had been left alone and in the same crib.

Reports are that there was also blood on the couch, a truck was missing as well as some guns that had been in the home. They would be found Saturday on an abandoned road. There were no signs of foul play, and nothing was found during an initial search of the surrounding fields.

Fearing an abduction but hoping that the two women were still alive, family members gathered that night and held a candle-light vigil to pray for their safe return.

“Whoever has them, give them a phone, have them call us, put an end to this,” the girl’s father, Paul Haarup pleaded.

On Sunday, the Platte County Sheriff’s Department said they were speaking with a person of interest in the case and have executed two search warrants. Later that same day, police found the bodies of the two women in a field near Trimble, MO. They say they were led there after talking with the unidentified suspect.

Family members said Key had been running with a bad crowd and was at her sister’s home in an attempt to turn her life around and provide a better life for both her and her 4-year-old daughter.

“That’s why she came to Britny and Matt’s house; to get help, to get out of that lifestyle. She was very serious about getting help,” Cassandra Meyers, sister-in-law of Matt Meyers, told reporters.

This also explains the last post Key made on her Facebook Profile, dated June 29.

“When I walked out this morning, I cried as I walked to the door… cried about how long I’d be away for, cried about leaving you all alone… I wanna hold you, protect you from all the things that Ive already endured. And I wanna show you, show you all the things that this life has in store for you… And Ill always love you- the way that a *mother should love *her daughter… Sweet Vaeh Rae.”

Tragic story all around, especially if the suspect turns out to be a part of the “bad crowd” Key had allegedly been involved with and had tried to leave behind.

Well, turns out it didn’t. Not long after I posted this it was reported that police had arrested 31-year-old Clifford B. Miller. High on meth, he decided he was going to break into Haarup’s home and have sex with her because he was attracted to her. He did not know Key was staying with her sister and was surprised to find her sleeping on the couch.

After beating her and smothering her with a pillow, Miller felt he had no choice but to kill Haarup. So he hit her in the head while she was sleeping and then smothered her. He then used the truck to dump the sisters in the field they were found in. He got caught after someone notified police that he was trying to sell guns that were stolen from the home.

Miller was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

Oh, shit. Where is the four-year-old? I’m hoping that them finding only the two adults means that the little girl is safe. I feel bad for all three of those little ones, and I hope that the women’s killers will be found and tried before Missouri gets rid of the death penalty.

My guess would be it’s the older sister’s ex-boyfriend/husband/fiance who was most likely part of that “bad” crowd she ran with. My heart goes out to the family of these young women.

Despite the fact that confronting and murdering her sister failed to rouse her, he just went ahead and killed her instead? I’d think his sort of filth would only get even hornier after a murder. God only knows why he moved one of the kids around. Perhaps he meant to gather them up and sell them, but realized the guns would be easier to carry off? (Not to mention less noisy and bothersome, and fewer questions to answer.) Which he couldn’t even manage to properly fence. What a complete failure all around.

Platte County prosecutor Eric Zahnd said he hasn’t decided whether to seek the death penalty.
Anderson said the younger girl was in the bedroom when Miller killed
Haarup. Miller told investigators he put the baby in the crib in a
different room with the older child, then returned to Haarup’s room,
where he planned to have sex with her but couldn’t.

Miller was arrested Sunday at his girlfriend’s home in the Kansas
City suburb of Parkville. He later told investigators where they could
find the women’s bodies, authorities say.

Zahnd said Miller’s alleged methamphetamine use cannot be presented as evidence that he didn’t intend to commit the crimes.

“Meth is an absolutely awful drug,” Zahnd said. “It does terrible,
terrible things. Under Missouri law, being voluntarily under the
influence of any drug or alcohol is no defense of any crime.”

A Platte County judge sentenced Clifford Miller, 31, to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of probation after he pleaded guilty to the murders of Britny Haarup and her sister Ashley Key.

Miller admitted he was high on meth at the time of the July 2012 murders. He told investigators he went to their Edgerton, Mo., home with the intention of raping Britny.

Platte County Sheriff Richard Andersen says Miller was surprised to find Britny’s 22-year-old sister Ashley Key sleeping on the couch when he entered the home. When she confronted him, Miller told detectives he decided to kill her.

“He began to punch her and beat her until she quit moving,” Sheriff Andersen said. “Then he smothered her with a pillow.”

According to prosecutors, after killing Ashley, Miller decided to kill Britny to cover up the first crime. Miller told police he then tried to have sex with a dead Britny Haarup but couldn’t because it was “too disgusting.”

Miller placed both women’s bodies in a family pick-up truck, stole four guns from the home and drove to a nearby field where he dumped the bodies. Soon, police received tips that Miller had been seen driving the missing truck and was trying to sell the guns.
