Four Teens Charged With Murdering Homeless Man, Dumping Body In Ohio River

EVANSVILLE, IN – Here’s a story out of Indiana, involving some teens charged with murder, that could really be made into one of those “based on a true story” movies like Bully or River’s Edge.
On Friday, police arrested William Hurt, 18, Deadra Hurt, 19, Harley Wade, 16, and Andrea Hurt, 16. They have all been accused of murdering a homeless man, Marcus E. Golike, 54, and then dumping his body into the Ohio river.
All four teens lived with Debbie Hurt, a woman who runs a foster care home and brings in troubled juveniles. Deadra Hurt was her biological daughter, but Debbie had adopted William and Andrea Hurt. Debbie had let Harley move into the home within the last month, and just from reading the articles and comments about him, he is one messed up kid.
The victim was known to Debbie and the teens because Marcus’ mother was Debbie’s foster mother. Even though they were not biological siblings, Debbie and Marcus considered themselves brother and sister. Debbie’s three kids always looked at Marcus as an uncle.
Marcus’ body was found floating in the Ohio river on June 17. A medical examiner would rule his death was caused by strangulation and list other injuries that included a broken rib. When Marcus’ mother was questioned, she said that the last time she had seen her son was a week earlier when he told her he was going to visit some family in Kentucky. According to his family, Marcus chose to live on the streets but visited family regularly and would give them money he received from his Social Security.
When Debbie learned of Marcus being murdered, she called police and told them that Marcus had been at her house the night before he was found. He had ate dinner with her and stayed up playing chess with her son, William. When she woke up the next morning, he was gone. William told police that his mother had the date wrong, and that Marcus had come over a few nights earlier, and had left without saying where he was going. Police noted that his hands had scratches on them and were swollen, but William told them the injuries came from punching a tree.
On Thursday, Debbie called police and gave them a bit of troublesome information she had not told them the first time they talked to her. She relayed an incident that had happened as she was play-wrestling with Harley, the teen who had recently moved into her home. She said that Harley had choked her using his forearm. She said on another occasion, he walked up to her and put his hands around her throat, then asked another family member if they ever wondered what it would be like to choke someone “until they took their last breath.” o_O
Police brought in Deadra and William for further questioning, and that’s when they got the truth of what happened to Marcus. William told police that he was woke up by one of the other teens who informed him they were about to do something. So all four teens got into Debbie’s van and went looking for Marcus. They found him walking down the street and stopped to talk with him. William said that Marcus got upset with some remarks Harley was making, and made some comments of his own.
Harley responded by getting out of the van and striking Marcus twice in the face. After Marcus fell to the ground, William said he then got out and hit Marcus in the face and torso at least five times. At no point did Marcus ever fight back, William said, and simply held his hands in front of his face to protect himself. William said that Harley got on top of Marcus and choked him until he was unconscious. They put Marcus in the van, tied up his legs and hands with a sheet, drove to the river and put Marcus in it. Afterwards, the teens used Marcus’ debit card to purchase $30 worth of soft drinks, chips and candy before collaborating their stories and going home.
All four teens were arrested and charged with murder, robbery causing serious bodily injury and criminal confinement. They are currently being held without bail in the Vanderburgh County Jail.
Can you imagine how Debbie feels right now? She was placed in foster care and raised by Marcus’ mother. She grows up and tries to pay it forward by becoming a foster mother herself, tackling the very tough job of raising troubled teens and even adopting two of them as her own. Then, in a worse case scenario of no good deed goes punished, her kids take part in murdering the only person she considered family. That’s rough.

Harley’s Facebook states: “love to spend time with my family, all my brothers and sisters, blood or not. stay doin me. no fear in my heart no bitch in my bones. i getz down with who ever, party like a animal, drank like the boy grown, if you fake dont come around me or i will remove you, i dont take shit from anyone who disrespects me, kinda talk black but i can say what i want, sound country but heey im white so no it dont make me fake, LOVE to clown, got mad respect for anyone who has it to me, you dis my family dont expect to be friends. other then that im me but yall know”
Deadra’s Facebook states: “My name is Deadra Lee Hurt. I have my ups an down down days but some people like my family an closest friends can always fix that. I hate drama, I cant stand hanging with too many girls because their nothing but drama. So i kick with my dudes. I love my life even through thick an thin. I love my family an friends an NO ONE will ever take that from me. I love going out all night with my friends an stayin up late just to fuck with people. If you cant accept for what ive been through, who i hang with, or how my crazyass family is, then fuck off an dont talk to me.

If I were to take a guess, prosecutors will offer the Hurt girls some kind of plea deal in exchange for testifying against Harley, who I imagine will be behind bars for a very long time and could be looking at the death penalty. I do hope that prosecutors take a look at Deadra’s Facebook activity after she took part in Marcus’ murder. She looks like she was having a pretty good time at thong sales, parties and Walmart.
