The teacher made such a dumb decision that I wonder how competent in general this teacher is. I can not for the life of me figure what defense this teacher could even come up with as why he/she showed the video to students. To add insult to stupidity have the students vote on seeing the video or not. Now they feel responsible for this teachers actions!

I felt no emotions towards the video myself  but I can not imagine that this did not have a negative effect on these students psyche.

For every bad teacher out there, there are 20 more who are excellent and want to see children succeed. I paid into our union every year, but I am DONE! I’m surprised that a teacher thought that this was a good idea!  While this is just a small sample of some of the types of videos you can find online, it wasn’t right to subject the students to it.  If they wanted to view it, they could’ve done it on their own.  There was no need to show it in a classroom, and besides, I’m sure some of them probably were really upset by the video.  I did watch it, and although it wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen, it did make my top 10, which means it had NO place in a room full of kids.

 Bet you still think we live in igloos and take our dog sleds to work every day. Even WITH the internet and Google at your fingertips.

Besides, it was in Quebec. They are barely Canadian. They are like alien newfies.

I was teaching when the Twin Towers were taken down. I watched the horror, mouth open, with my students and other teachers. We were all horrified. We were in N.J., right outside of N.Y. and within spitting distance from Newark airport. There was not a television or radio that was turned off, they all played the horror in full for the whole, extended day. A live radio feed was even played over the school’s P.A. system.
We all sat glued to the t.v.s, classes moving from rooms without reception into classes that did have reception. The school went into lock down and there was no was to really escape the live broadcasts, the P.A. played a live feed.People started jumping from the towers. There was no doubt of it, we watched it live. We all gasped, gagged and some ran to the bathrooms. So many knew someone that worked either at the Trade Center or very near it. The staff should have turned off the live feed. The administration should have given updates without the actual gory details. None of us did what we should have. None of us have made excuses, no b.s. about it being part f living history or current events. We just used bad judgement.I was teaching when Daniel Pearl was beheaded. The week it happened I gave my normal assignment to the World Culture, Social Studies and  History classes; basically find a current news story that links (depending on the class) history and present, past world events to current world events or past issues that still effect cultures today. That was the weekend homework assignment. I was shocked on Sunday when I opened my school email (I allowed students to email me these homework assignments. I would print it and they would have to discuss the articles in class on Monday.) Normally I would have 2 or 3 articles per class but this week I had an article from close to every kid in each class. They all dealt with the beheading of Daniel Pearl, many linked to a video.I opened the first one, from Corey and watched. I was sick, physically sick. It was the worst thing that I had ever seen. I closed the video before Daniel had even died, he was still screaming as they carved off his head when I closed it. There was no way that I was watching more. I read the articles my students sent but did not open anymore video links.Monday a few students had disks and one even had a laptop with them. They had all heard about it, most had written about it and the few that didn’t just had not bothered to do any assignment but were still interested in the story. They wanted to watch it in class. This was multiple classes (only 1 laptop, poor district long ago) I refused. I complimented them all on their hard work and interest but I said I could not show the video. Most had already seen it and the few that had not wanted to but I still refused. I’d like to say that I was protecting them but that is b.s. I taught 9th to 12th grade special education E.D.classes. My kids were thugs for most part, most had criminal records and the only real learning disability was ADD or ADHAD the rest was emotionally disturbed and just bad homes. I refused because I did not want to watch it. If that was not the case I can not say that we might not have. We did watch news clips and work on that story for most of the week and I KNOW for a fact that by the end of Tuesday ALL of my students had seen at least part (what they could watch) of the actual beheading. They had made copies and watched in the media room and then later at the local library. The video actually spread throughout the entire school within 2 weeks.The next few weeks were spent dispelling conspiracies and hate. I adjusted lesson plans to include tolerance teaching on a few levels due to the kids watching the videos on different sites and reading comments about either Muslims or Jews. Who they blamed / hated depended on which site they visited.I know other teachers, even in ‘regular’ classes had the same problems. Maybe if I, or we had watched and discussed the video in our classes the later issues would not have happened? Not that that would have made me change my mind but it is a thought.Still, in hindsight, I know it was right to not allow them to watch it. I did not condone watching it, even if I did it for the wrong reasons. That is the image we want to teachers to give kids.The problem is, teachers are human and make mistakes. I am not sticking up for this teacher. I have seen the Icepick video and it is not pretty. I want to say that if I were still teaching I would not allow it in my class.I do want to know why the teacher showed it to the class, what were the ages, what was the class, what was the conversation within the class?If it was just a teacher showing a shock video, bad move. Fire his (or her) stupid ass.I just can not say the same for a teacher who has a class that has been following the Picton case and inquiry. Killers have been in the news big time in Canada as of late, Russell Williams, Karla Homolka giving interviews (it was reported that she dated Magnotta) and the whole Picton inquiry just recently. I can see in certain classes Magnotta being a story. I can see a teacher after long discussions with a senior class giving into showing the video, not for gore but to bring reality into a hot topic. It is still stupid to show that graphic video especially since the Canadian courts are going after the sites showing it but it could be a stupid mistake by a basically good teacher.I’ll read more on this and might be back going “Disregard above comment. A gym teacher showing this as a heath video is unacceptable. The big difference between 9/11 and this murder tape is that 9/11 was live and raw and well, your location kinda took away the option of not seeing. Whether the students found our during classes or not is irrelevant in that situation. Seeing the devastation would have been unavoidable, without any online videos.

This teacher chose to pull up a heinous video and show minors. MINORS. He didn’t have a lapse in judgement, he had a huge brain fart that liquified his gray matter and it oozed out his ears and into the storm drain.

 Every time I hear of someone homeschooling kids, I can’t help but think of the poor kids locked in the basement, starving to death after a day of heavy chores and heavy beatings. I know it isn’t always the way, but I can’t help it. Maybe it comes from reading DD.

 Seriously, I would not recommend watching it. I am a twisted soul who thrives on other peoples misery. The only thing I have on my “bucket list” is to find a dead body (not a kids, fingers crossed), which I haven’t yet. I have very little feelings for other people and I will unashamedly admit that I consider gore as my porn, usually the gorier the better. As much as I joke around, I kid you not about this. I’ve only ever met one person who was homeschooled. He had some psychological problems – among them, the former belief that he was actually a robot, which required extended therapy to convince him otherwise. Apparently he was really into robots. If anyone made the mistake of conversing with him, it didn’t matter what the topic was, as he would steer the conversation to robots within five minutes. I once was forced to listen to him spend 45 minutes explaining the entire backstory to some Star Wars droid character he made up, named “CIO Demolitions.” At first I thought he was talking about a Star Wars RPG character or fanfic subject, but no, he made this character up for no other reason than his own personal amusement, apparently.
