Knoxville, TN - A thirty-three year old man who has had 30 children with 11 different mothers is appealing to the state of Tennessee for a reduction in child-support.

Very often we bring you stories of horrible people doing horrible things. Today instead, I am using this public forum to inform you of a noble man being subjected to systemic injustice. Together we may be able to right this wrong.

Desmond Hatchett, 33, is simply one of us… toiling at a minimum-wage job to make ends meet and provide for his dependents. For Desmond, that means paying child-support to the 11 mothers of his 30 children. Those of you who also have 30 children understand completely how difficult this must be, but the rest of us can still imagine. So hard… From this, it may not be surprising that Desmond has recently gone to court to ask for relief from this financial burden.

The court case offers a window into how a judicial system can bully a man for a situation entirely beyond his control. It was reported that – when Hatchett is working – he is required to turn over 50% of his wages for child support which is the maximum allowed under law. We do not know the support for each child, because it varies due, in part, on the ages and needs of the children. We do know that – due to Desmonds salary – some of the mothers of his children get $1.49 a month.

$1.49 a month?!? Do these kids live in Paris?!? …and how much of that truly goes to support the child? Hmmm…

With him being such a generous provider for his children, it seems odd that some wonder if the father of 30 children can be a good father? Once, when asked in a TV interview whether he can “keep up with it all,” Hatchett said he knows all their names, ages and birthdates.

Wonder no more.

Sadly, reports of Desmond’s dire situation have produced an ugly reaction within some. I have read of calls for sterilization. But, if such barbarism were allowed, how could we ensure our future generations to be of the best pedigree. Hear me now! We need Desmond Hatchett – and those like him – to reach ~~Idiocracy~~ A Brave New World.

As shocking as is a suggestion of sterilization, it pales in comparison to the calls of others for… dare I even say it… self-restraint. What is this?!? Communist China?!?

So… if you are as moved as I am by the plight of Desmond Hatchett, I urge you to write the Knox County (TN) child support clerk’s office and express your outrage at their Draconian child support demands and your unconditional support of Desmond’s request that the state of Tennessee subsidize these children and end a situation that is clearly and completely beyond Desmond’s control. Only with your help, will this situation be rectified.

I’m just curious how the, say, 8th woman looked at this treat of a man & thought that any of it seemed like a good idea. Yeah yeah, men should be able to take care of their own birth control needs, but we know it really comes down to the woman in a lot of cases. actually, you know, considering the fucked up state of “family court” in the US, and the weird fuzzy logic courts use in determining support, I have to wonder…The purpose of “child support” being paid to anybody is so that the children are able to retain the standard of living they had when the parents were together.

What kills me is that- based on the number of kids and the age of the guy- he was clearly screwing numerous women at any given time. And, as another poster commented, averaged 3 kids with each of his 11 women. In this case, though I think he should be held at least as accountable as the state is holding him, these women are absolute morons who are at least equally at fault, if not more. They were dumb enough to have multiple children with him after he failed to provide for their first, or even stick around for any length of time. In order to knock this many women up, this often, and work his minimum wage job, there’s no way he spent any amount of quality time with any of them. I feel bad for the kids, but with mothers like that they were doomed no matter who their daddy/ies would’ve been.

JGo: in NY at least, that doesn’t matter. I have my kids from Sunday afternoon-Friday evening. I feed them, clothe them, take them to school, pay for aftercare (while I’m at work), pay for camp in the summer and so on - and I really don’t make that much more than my ex wife – like maybe 20% – but *I* pay support to HER. The court said it’s because the kids are entitled to the standard of living they’d have had if we’d stayed together while with either parent. So because I earn more money, I pay her – even though I have the kids 80% of the time.
The only real justification for that, at least that I can come up with, is that I am the man and am therefore the ATM, while she is the female and by virtue of that, the victim.

I suspect the other 49 states aren’t much different.

Well his child support payments are of minimal impact to the children and the state, no doubt, pays most of the support for the children. I say not to force him into sterilization, but offer that as mearly an option. The Sterizliation should to the point that he produces not reproductively useful sperm or, better, no sperm at all. The ~~mutilzation~~ sterilization should be to the extent that it cannot be reversed. If he makes 3 times minimum wage the child support will be on the wages above that floor.

The laws in NY are almost as messed up as AZ & FL… They(among others) have a little known law called “Presumptive Paternity.” Basically, if a man doesn’t secure a divorce from a cheating spouse before the child is born, the husband is automatically the father for child support purposes. Disputation of the paternity through DNA testing is not even considered by the family courts due to the law.
It’s not even about the “best interests of the child,” but rather, the “best interests of the state.” Many newly divorced female parents go straight to the welfare offices when they realize they can’t support the family. This way the states have someone that’s irrevocably on the hook for the money, even if they’re not the biological father.

Amen! I firmly believe that after a certain number of children that you are already unable to support something should be required by law…. it is insane to think a buck and a half child support. We all know that at least 9 out of those 11 are on welfare and we tax payers by those kids clothes and pay for their food through the government funding their moms get… It should make homeless people look like saints because they may have no home and smell like shit but at least we are not paying for it. This sounds about right for most states. My ex was a clerk in divorce court for years and this is actually pretty common. While there are plenty of guys who just don’t pay, for those that do, they are often raked over the coals financially for years, even while their ex wives fuck other guys for but won’t marry them because they would lose their spousal benefits. having grown up watching my Mom’s partner get fucked over royally by his ex wife, including paying for her to move 300 miles away so he could not see his kids on the weekends(she moved in with her boyfriend), sent him photos of her wearing lingerie that she bought with his money(while she was fucking the other guy already) and using every trick in the book to get more money out of him all the while not marrying the guy she lived with for seven years. We’re so used to hearing about deadbeat dads that when we hear about the women who are doing the fucking over, we act all surprised. Its kind of sexist but ask anyone who works in custody battles and they will easily tell you douche nozzle is right on the money. A judge tells HLN that previous reports of the man with 30 kids requesting child support help are not true.

This week national and local media outlets have been reporting that Tennessee resident Desmond Hatchett had 30 kids and requested the court to reduce his child support payments. The judge handling the custody cases, Stan Briggs, tells HLN that Hatchett has 24 legal children, and that there are no pending hearings about child support payments at this time. The reason? He’s been incarcerated since December 2009 — and doesn’t get out until 2014.

“The cases are not proceeding at this time because he is incarcerated,” Briggs says. “We are not enforcing any child support while he is incarcerated. Once he is released, then we will set the child support and enforce the child support. I have had to incarcerate him in the past for non-payment.”
