Texas City, Tx – On Thursday, 45-year-old Kevin Edison Smith  received a life sentence after a jury took 30 minutes to convict him of the 1996 rape and strangulation of 13-year-old Krystal Jean Baker.

On March 5 1996, Baker got into a fight with her grandmother and was looking for a way to get to a friend’s house. She was last seen walking from her grandmother’s house to a convenience store where she tried to call her mother. Her body would be found dumped under a Trinity River bridge later that night. She had been raped before she was strangled to death.

Her murder remained unsolved for 14 years until a Chambers County sheriff’s officer took her dress and resubmitted it for analysis using current technology. A semen stain was found, and the resulting DNA recovered was matched to a DNA sample Smith had submitted after a minor drug arrest in 2010.

After his arrest, Smith admitted on videotape that he gave Baker a ride, then choked her with a leather strap when she “started freaking out on me.”

Smith did not take the stand during his trial, but was defiant in the courtroom regarding the evidence suggesting sexual assault. He called out several times, “I didn’t do that! I didn’t do it like he said I did!”

He also cried as the verdict was read and commented several times that he couldn’t understand why  Smith has filed an appeal but will have to find another lawyer because his defense lawyer, Stephen Christopher Taylor, no longer wants anything to do with him.

Judge Carroll E. Willborn Jr. sentenced Smith to 40 years in prison without the possibility of parole. He was not eligible for the death penalty because it had been placed on a moratorium at the time of Baker’s murder.

Investigators plan on questioning Smith about the “Killing Fields,” A name given to an area of I-45 between Houston and Galveston where dozens of girls and young women vanished, beginning in the 70s, and where the nude bodies of four women were found between 1984 and 1997. These unsolved murders were also the subject of a recent movie.

If it wasn’t for the free Dominos lunch provided to the jury, the verdict would have returned much sooner.

“I didn’t do that! I didn’t do it like he said I did!”

We don’t need to know how you did it.  Your semen was on her dress.  She was sexually assaulted.  You don’t need to explain – just go to jail and take your punishment as a rapist and murderer of a child.  Hope you enjoy a lot of ass banging.

  • DangerousKindOfSnark

Um, sorry, but when they solve the murder by connecting your DNA through a semen stain, than yea you did do it. Although, I would love to hear the fanciful tale about how he had the girl in his car, strangled her, got his cum on the poor things dress, and didn’t rape her. I’m sure it would make for an interesting read.

  • EveryVillainIsLemons

Don’t tell me, let me guess–the car did it.

Curious – what do you have to leave under your pillow to get the sperm fairy to pay you a visit? 😉
(Christ my mind is having a field day with that question! 🙂

He couldn’t understand why? Why what? Why they found him guilty of murder and sexual assault? Poor guy, he cried when they read the verdict. Boo-hoo, poor Kevin, cry to your new boyfriend in prison, he’ll make you feel better. He walked around free for over 14 years after he raped and strangled that little girl, he walked around free longer than she was alive. Bury him alive in a pine box filled with scorpions.

I like the way you think !

A condom, duh. They need a place to leave it.

I was reading down the list of heart warming stupid criminals and then this article. Reading about the crime, I can’t imagine why this guy would be difficult for his attorney to get along with him.

  •  I am also glad they took that DNA sample from him during his drug arrest!! Otherwise his ass may have gotten away with it even longer.

  •  Interesting that they are questioning him into the whole “killing fields” thing. The movie was okay too. But I will echo again that it is a great stroke of luck that his DNA was taking in 2010. He will at least no longer get to walk the streets after having done that to that child. But you do have to wonder what he has done with his time before and after killing that child. And maybe there is some DNA evidence growing cold somewhere else that may link him to other murders. Maybe more families have long awaited answers coming to them.

He sure wasn’t crying like a bitch when he was killing and walking around free. Is it coincidence that rapists usually aren’t too bright?

I just viewed the case on ID investigation discovery on tv. June 21, 2014. The mother was interviewed and she said she was trying to get “Krystal’s Law” passed in Texas. I am wondering if she accomplished that or not. Does anyone know? Maybe we should start a petition or something? I think it requires DNA testing of evident in such cases.
