Funeral Home Employee Fingered For Corpse Abuse

Toledo, OH - Lawrence J. Clement, 57, has turned himself in to Toledo police after having been told that there was an active warrant for his arrest. This in response to allegations that he was discovered touching a corpse ‘in a sexual manner’ while working at a funeral home.

Police say Clement – of Temperance Michigan – had “sexual contact by means of touching the erogenous zone” of Brenda Shular-Cameron, 51. Shular-Cameron had died Sunday of multiple organ failure. Shular-Cameron’s family was reportedly told that another funeral home employee witnessed Clement “fondling” the woman’s corpse.

Clement, who had worked part time at H.H. Birkenkamp Funeral Home where the incident allegedly occurred, has since been fired by the company, a spokesman said Wednesday. The family of the victim reportedly said they were told Clement worked there for seven years and was a ‘greeter.’

“I’m enraged,” said Anne Lamprecht, the victim’s mother. “My daughter died a horrible death. She was a beautiful young woman. I cringe to even think of them touching her.”

The family had the woman’s body transferred to a different funeral home, but the future is not yet clear.

“We can’t even bury her now,” Ms. Lamprecht said. “We can’t make funeral arrangements. We don’t know if the police will hold her body. She didn’t deserve this. None of the family deserved this.”

Shular-Cameron’s family have claimed funeral home manager Susan Birkenkamp offered to forgive the $11,000 funeral cost if the family didn’t call police. Lisa Marshall, a spokeswoman for Houston-based Service Corporation International, which owns the Birkenkamp funeral home denied the family was offered a deal. Marshall said that the company wouldn’t have told the family in the first place if it wanted to cover anything up.

“I do not believe for one minute that we offered the family anything for their silence, and I believe that we operated as we always do with full transparency,” Marshall said on Thursday.

The woman’s mother had reportedly said, though, that the funeral home employee who witnessed the alleged abuse had threatened to go to the authorities if the family was not notified.

The Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors has reported that the funeral home did contact them about the matter. The board also is investigating. Board Acting Director Jennifer Baugess said that the Board could suspend or revoke the license of the funeral home or its director if wrong doing is found. Board inspectors are reportedly in Toledo today to interview employees.

Clement is scheduled to be arraigned today in Toledo Municipal Court on a charge of abuse of a corpse.

Such intrigue! I had always thought funeral homes were kinda boring. Hollywood could make a movie about this. But, please please leave out the obligatory sex scene.

I’m sorry, but any time the word “greeter” is mentioned, I just think of that fat guy in Idiocracy who is the greeter at Costco and he tells everyone coming in, “Welcome to Costco, I love you.” So imagining that guy doing the Costco greeting at a funeral home just made me lose my shit.

I think I would have to agree with you on that. Not sure knowing this helping the family at all. This disgusting guy needs to be dealt with but now the family has added grief on top of the existing grief.

It’s horrible for the woman’s family, but if the funeral home hadn’t gone public with it this creep could have just slinked off to the next funeral home and kept on at it. At least the family can get some comfort out of knowing that at least the guy is now notorious and getting charged appropriately, and hopefully won’t be able to do this to anybody else. Well, not without a whole lotta digging to get at a corpse anyway, and let’s face it – if he was willing to go through that much trouble surely he would just be dating a live woman?

Even if it didn’t hurt her, there is a certain level of respect and dignity that you would expect your loved ones body to be treated with. While I don’t think that the funeral home should be shut down, I believe that this guy needs to be punished, and never allowed to work in this capacity again.

You’re right, but I guarantee you the same hospital or school district will definitely be served with a lawsuit. I was responding to the blurb in the article about the funeral home possibly losing their license.

Its the American way to sue the pants off someone if you feel you’ve been “done wrong”. Maybe it would have been better if the family had never known. Sure, its just a dead, souless body/shell of a human, but the family paid a shit-ton of money for their loved one to have a proper and respectful burial. Key words there….loved one.

I wouldnt want anyone touching my mom when she died, and she has beeen dead for 3 yrs now, my family just cleaned out her shit the next day and sent her to be cremated but thinking of her being touched that way would really hurt.
