Man Charged With Biting, Punching Children During Domestic DisputePORTSMOUTH, N.H. – A man is in jail after a fight with his girlfriend involved him biting one of her kids and punching the other.

Police say a fight broke out between 41-year-old Edward Critten and his girlfriend over the condition of the apartment they were living in. A television was broken during the fight and the two got into a physical altercation.

When the woman’s two boys, ages 9 and 11, ran out to defend her, Critten turned on them as well.

“It was at that time that the suspect bit the 11-year-old’s chest and then punched the 9-year-old in the chest,” said Capt. Corey MacDonald with the Portsmouth Police Department.

One of the boys ran to a neighbor to have them call 911. When police arrived, they found the 11-year-old had fallen down a flight of stairs during the argument and had to be taken to the hospital.

Critten was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, two counts of simple assault and one count of criminal mischief. Not surprisingly, he has a lengthy criminal history that includes charges of possession of controlled substances and possession of a deadly weapon.

If he were able to make bail, he is not to have any contact with the children or their mother. On Monday he was not able to post bail, $5,000 personal recognizance and $7,500 cash, explaining to the judge that his only income was the Welfare and Medicaid benefits he receives from the state.

      You know, it doesn’t say he started the fight, broke the TV, or started the physical altercation. Just that “they” did.

      I wish all domestic violence could be blamed on men and their evil penises, but women are just as likely to start shit, especially over the “condition of the apartment”. Unless he started the altercation or was significantly more violent than she was, I’m not willing to crucify him.

      It’s a shame about the kids, though. :-(

      I don’t think that’s necessarily true. Many people have records and are now very productive members of society. My husband being one, he was in prison for years and it was hard for him to find a job but he kept pushing, taking temp jobs until he got hired on somewhere…that whole process took him 8 years but he never gave up. 

      He is also one of the most loving people when it comes to children that you’ll ever meet. If you want your baby to go to sleep give it to my husband and they will be happy and knocked out in no time.

      My question exactly. I live in NH and was under the impression only single parents with minor children can get benefits here. I was a single mother with 2 small kids and got kicked off medicaid when I got a part time job that paid about $75 a week. wtf.
