Spartanburg, SC - Divorce is a difficult pill to swallow, and some stubborn folks just won’t swallow that pill.
Meet the beguiling 38-year-old Stacy Splawn. Knowing that Prince Charming must be awaiting her beauty and charm to be released from the binds of marriage, she asked her husband for a divorce.
Being a good Christian, Douglas Splawn told her that their vows were “till death do we part” and that he declined to take part in the sin of marriage dissolution. He thought her response of “That’ll be sooner than you think” was a little curious, but the dedicated fellow continued with his husbandly duties (gag!).
He happened upon a syringe and vial of medication which was labeled succinylcholine in Stacy’s eyeglass case on the nightstand. The warning label about surgical use, death and paralysis on the vial prompted him to hide the medication and fill the syringe with water. Later, while lying in bed and discussing their marital issues, Douglas asked her about the medication. He told her that he had filled the syringe with the paralyzing agent and thrown the bottle away. Stacy flew into a rage and attempted to stab him with the needle, but he managed to win that round o’ crazy.
Things around Casa de Splawn became more mysterious the following evening when Douglas overheard her confiding in their children about his fictitious attempts to commit suicide. He finally had enough of her creepshow and contacted Mary Black Hospital where she had recently been fired from her position as an emergency room secretary.
Douglas was advised by hospital staff to call the police and Stacy was charged with criminal domestic violence. She has now been released on a $3500 bond and Douglas had agreed to a divorce. Master Deputy Craig Bradley may have a future in marriage counseling with his sage advice: “If you want a divorce, leave. You don’t have to kill him.”
