Woman Arrested After Letter Admitting Guilt Is Found At Dog’s Grave

Fishers, IN – Sarah E. Rust, 28, has been arrested by police as a result of an incident on January 24 when her boyfriend’s dog was allegedly thrown from the balcony of their apartment. The dog, Raider, died from the injuries suffered on impact.

Police first received a tip that Rust’s boyfriend had told both a neighbor and a veterinarian who had been unable to revive the dog that Rust had thrown the dog from the second story balcony during an argument. When police questioned the man later, he reportedly told them instead that the dog’s falling from the balcony had been an accident.

During the course of the investigation, the ex-girlfriend of the man – who reportedly shared ownership of Raider – visited Raider’s gravesite only to find a letter to the dead dog written by Rust. It began:

Dear Raider,
First and Foremost Forgive me, but also forgive me and your daddy for fighting. We brought your life into our quarrel. You did not deserve to be any part of our combat. I ended your life, for which I am truly sorry my son.

Ruh-roh.

Rust was arrested on Friday on a Class D felony charge of cruelty to animals and was taken to the Hamilton County Jail. She faces 5-years in prison.

“It’s important for people to know that we do take this seriously, and if you do injure an animal in anger you will suffer the consequences for that act,” said Tom Weger of the Fishers Police Department.

You’re absolutely right. Laws aren’t nearly strict enough for any kind of murder. I used to rescue and foster animals and I saw the direct result of the cruelty meted out on these helpless creatures. I am speaking about this specific story. I don’t know where you got the idea that I thought that the laws for human murder were just fine the way they are. I say strengthen the laws for all murders with extra penalties for the helpless.

I can understand your confusion because the article only refers to the owner as “the man” but this sentence clears it all up. The ex-girlfriend of the man (the owner) shared custody of Raider and she was the one who found the note and turned it in. The man was covering for his current girlfriend (Rust) just like other men and women cover for their penises and vaginas when it comes to their children.

Animals are considered by law to be property such as a couch, table, toothpaste…. You can’t get pain and suffering for property damage. Animals feel love, pain, fear, stress and have many other qualities that humans do. Like babies they are dependent on the whims of the people who take care of them. They don’t complain or criticize, they don’t care what you look like or if your haircut looks terrible, they are not selfish or deceitful and they love unconditionally. All animals should be treated kindly even if they are raised for food. I would do whatever I needed to do to protect my dogs. People that abuse animals should be punished harshly. Agreed. But here’s the logic behind that level of sentencing for this kind of offense. When, in a fit of anger, someone will assault, maim or kill something they have an emotional attachment to, it is an anti-social tendency that is unlikely to be restricted to animals. She is far more likely than someone who has not killed a damn pet to lash out physically at her boyfriend (if she hasn’t already) and, down the line, perhaps even children. There is a significant difference between “temporary insanity” (which is exceptionally difficult to prove, BTW) and a tendency to get violent when angry. It’s not that she didn’t comprehend that what she was doing was wrong at the moment; she threw the dog to its death in an attempt to injure her boyfriend, it’s owner. Remorse doesn’t necessarily signal temporary insanity.

Five years is the maximum sentence. She won’t get five years unless she has violent priors (which it doesn’t appear to be). Ideally, she’ll get a minimal amount of incarceration, a significant fine and court-ordered therapy.

Actually, it depends on the state. In a handful of states (and more as time progresses) do recognize punitive damages beyond “market value” for the negligent or intentional death of a pet.

But the fact that she loved the animal…they were having a huge fight where tempers were out of control…she wrote to the dog trying to show her remorse…I know people do things in the heat of the moment that they regret. I had a friend who committed suicide this week. I know that if she was in the right mind, she would never have done it. If she could look in retrospect, I know she would have regretted it and never have done it. Things happen when people get all worked up. People do things that they wouldn’t normally do. I had a cat that I loved so much. A beautiful snowshoe Siamese named Kimba and he was the little love of my life. At one point I referred to him as my baby because of how much I loved him and didn’t think anything could feel like that. That was until I had an actual baby, the love is not the same at all. Yes, I still loved him but he was an animal, not a human being. If that were the case then we wouldn’t just be able to purchase animals or go through a brief interview during an adoption process. We wouldn’t be able to sell them on CL or breed them to sell their young.

When my husband gave Kimba away because of the new baby did I cry? Absolutely, I was so upset and I didn’t forgive him for a long time. I missed him and still do and it’s been 5 years. When my dog Midnight died did it hurt like hell? Yes, but that pain was nothing in comparison to losing our daughter. Why? Because he was an animal.

I believe SuicideRed was speaking along the same lines and about something that is personal to her. Her father is incarcerated for the same amount of time that this woman could (but likely will not) face. That’s probably painful to her.

Of course, I believe, at some point, you specifically stated that that’s not what you’re saying, which I understand. I was a dog owner for a long time, and I loved her. But that dog was NOT my equal. Honestly, if it happened to me, I’d probably feel differently. I’d be very sad if someone killed a pet that I love. I have two cats that I love so much and if anything happened to them, I’d be heartbroken. That said, I know what people are capable of in the heat of the moment. By default I see situations like these as times where the perpetrator might deserve some compassion. Whether some are willing to admit it or not, people do stupid things that even they can’t understand in the heat of the moment. If it’s against another human, there should be strong penalties and the people should have to pay for their crimes. I understand that some people see their pets as children. If someone takes a pet and tosses it out, it’s not right, they should receive some kind of penalty…but not anything near what it would be if a human did this to another human. I read another article on this site where a lady who has a drinking problem bashed a childs head into the asphalt over and over again…she got 3 years…with time served, she’s only paying 9 months of her life for the crime! How is this justice when someone can kill an animal and get 5 years, yet someone who can repeatedly bash a helpless baby’s head into the concrete can get 3 years with time served?! It’s not justice.

The lady showed remorse for killing the dog. She felt horrible about it, and I’ll bet you even if she wasn’t in trouble, she’d never do it again and she’d regret it for the rest of her life. Those horrible decisions stay with you a lifetime.

Thanks for welcoming me into the “I hope you are sterile club!”…given that some people do not read posts clearly and are quick to assume/judge, I’m not sure it’s fair to us. To be honest…I am sterile. I had one child (who is the most brilliant and beautiful girl everrr) and almost died while having her. I had subsequent miscarriages…and yes, now I’m unable to have children. I’m not as sensitive about it anymore as I was in the past, otherwise it might have bothered me when she said those things to me.

I decided to read some of NeenaP’s posts on other threads, out of sheer curiosity, and she seems to be very incompassionate and quick to hurl anger, hatred and insults. That’s on her, she’s welcome to be as much of a cunty bitch as she likes to people she doesn’t know, because it only reflects how unhappy she is with her own life. Give her the maximum jail time possible with no parole, a hefty fine and court costs, a large donation to her local animal shelter, community service consisting of cleaning animal cages and yards, all while wearing a T-shirt stating “I am a spiteful killer of helpless dogs” on the front and back. Bet that she won’t do it again.

I understand that everyone has a different point of view. I believe that laws regarding abuse and murder of ANY living being aren’t nearly strict enough. A person’s opinion is usually influenced by their experiences. I was involved with rescued animals that were beaten, tortured and starved. I had to lessen my direct involvement with the animals because the depression caused by seeing the results of abuse became too much to deal with. So that is why my feelings regarding punishment are so strong. Where did the part about sterilizing people come from? I must have missed that part.

Sorry for your loss. You would be completely within your rights to be furious with your friend for committing suicide at this point, but I see you have already made steps towards resignation and acceptance of the sad facts. Have you been there before?

I ask because the fact that the bitch in this story wrote a letter asking forgiveness of the dog does not make it any less heinous to me. It only makes it easier to prove. I agree that the dog is not human and not a child; but she meant to harm a human (her boyfriend), and she killed to do so. In the process she hurt others (the boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend) besides the dog. What would you propose they do to her? This was not some family heirloom butt-ugly vase that she picked up and tossed off the balcony. This was a living, breathing creature that probably trusted her. If that didn’t give her pause, I worry about her impulse control and wonder whether the rest of us are safe while she is not locked up. And if you think they are going to give her anywhere near the 5 years discussed, you will be very surprised when the verdict comes.

This is not the first time I’ve had to deal with a personal loss, tragedy seems to follow me like I’m it’s bitch.
She’s probably better off getting some serious mental health help. You’re right, a rational, person who had proper impulse control would have stopped themself from doing this.
