Third Grader In Critical Condition After She Was Shot In ClassroomBREMERTON, Wash. – An 8-year old girl is in critical condition after a gun being carried by a 9-year-old classmate accidentally discharged shot her in the stomach.

The shooting occurred yesterday at around 1:30 p.m. inside a third grade classroom at Armin Jahr Elementary School. The gun was inside the boy’s backpack when it discharged, hitting Amina Kocer-Bowman in the abdomen.

Police are investigating how the boy got the gun and why he brought it to school in the first place, but feel the shooting was accidental. Bowman was in critical condition last night after surgery but her friends and family gave reporters a ‘thumbs up’ signal as they left the hospital later that night.

The boy who brought the gun was booked into juvenile detention for investigation of unlawful possession of a gun, bringing a dangerous weapon to school and third-degree assault. KIRO reported that the husband of the teacher who was in the classroom when the shooting happened, said the student who allegedly had the gun was recently transferred to the school and had been a real problem in the classroom.

Sad.  I hope the little girl makes a full recovery :/

It may have been an accident on this poor girl. But maybe the bullet was meant for someone else. Why else would he bring a gun to school? Do they still do “show and tell” in that grade??

• sugarpie

I really hope she pulls through and is 100% okay.  Hopefully the kid with the gun didn’t have other sinister plans for it.

• ViewerBeware

Poor kiddo. Hopefully they find the parents of this little boy and shoot each of them in the stomach….and then leave them without medical attention.

• CT

What defines “real problem in the classroom”?  Problem like wiping boogers on other kids backs or real problem like fighting at recess and bringing your Mom’s crack pipe to school kind of problems?

It’s called a gun safe, parents — with a combination lock that you actually use.

• reapre

Hrm, I have guns…I don’t have a gun safe with a combination.  My little sisters boyfriends parents own many guns, and do have a gun safe, tho.  However, from a young age he was trained with guns, so he loves ‘em, and respects them.

A 9 year old is old enough to know about a gun in the house, and they’re old enough to know it’s not a toy, nor something they should ever bring to school.  I’m gonna go on a limb, and put parental blame on this.

I never leave my gun loaded with the safety off, and round in chamber, ever.

• CT

I am not anti gun – one of the best Christmas presents I have gotten in the past few years was  training at the NRA.  Good stuff.  Anyway, I just think that some kids are morons and don’t think of the ramifications of what they are doing.  Give them an opportunity to fuck up and they will – this is an example of that in my opinion.

• reapre

There’s a gun that I actually got to handle and use a couple years back that doesn’t get made anymore.  The pistol is AWESOME.  It’s an H&K P7.  The grip was the safety, if you didn’t know that, you’d think the gun was broken, because you couldn’t get it to fire without being told of its “safety”.  Kind of like the thumb safety on a 1911, just not as obvious, or awkward.

This is called: The Child Figured Out That School “Does’t Matter”.

I had a first grade student that didn’t give a rat’s ass about school or it’s work. His name was Cedric I think.  The kid acted like he was 17 & his parents thought school as a day care center. They would drop him off and not look back until 3pm.

This kid needs a new family with a good set of core values, healthy children activities, no teenagers (usually these kids tend to hang out with older kids, imitating them even with their speech) or good role model teenagers (yes, they do exist) and lots of sports.

This is sad and tragic because this doesn’t sound like a lost cause. I hope the girl pulls through, that the boy gets a good punishment (including seeing orphaned kids & HELPING THEM) and the incubators getting punished for letting this sh*t go down when the kid can still be managed.

We are the same way.  There are guns in my home and no we do not have a safe but they are NEVER left loaded and the bullets are stored away from the gun (both the guns and the bullets are out of the children’s reach)

My older kids shoot up North so they too are trained in gun safety and know the rules and to respect guns.     My 8 year old won’t even touch his own bb gun unless we hand it to him (He only gets to shoot it at our property in the UP)   That’s one of the rules.  You never ever touch a gun unless it is handed to you by one of us adults.    The same rules that apply to a hunting rifle apply to his bb gun.  Sounds silly but a bb gun can do damage and because a gun is a gun.  We don’t want to confuse him with seperate rules.

Anyways; it’s obvious the parents didn’t take such precautions and the child obviously has not been taught in gun safety.   I think if you keep guns in your house or anywhere where children are you need to teach them about the real serious nature of a gun.   It’s obvious his parents haven’t bothered to take precaution so I doubt they took the time to teach the son about the danger.  I don’t even think it’s just enough to put the gun away…..you have to educate them to respect and properly understand the rules of guns.   You cannot underestimate a child.  Hiding it isn’t good enough because some accidental shootings occur when the parents don’t think the child even knew there was a gun since they “hid” it.    Children are capable of of finding them and think “cool a gun”  and treat it like a toy.   Leaving a loaded gun lying around unsecured is asking for an accident.

• Zazen

His parents can be included in the moron category, possibly with an upgrade to galloping retard. If they really gave a damn about their son, they’d have taught him better. Plus they wouldn’t leave an unloaded gun around.
When I was a little kid, our playroom in the basement included a wall with about twenty antique guns displayed (Dad was an antique gun dealer).
We never touched them because Dad taught us that:
1. Always assume a gun is loaded and therefore dangerous.
2. We were to never touch them without him there and saying we could.

• Spifftastic

I feel like (I hope that) it is most likely a case of trying to look badass. If the kid was a troublemaker then maybe he just wanted to show how awesome he really was by bringing in a gun. If he was a new student there’s a good chance he moved around a lot and I remember some kids feeling like they had to prove themselves to fit in. Horrible either way, but I like my scenario much better than thinking he really wanted to kill someone.

• tdavid6

I have a third grader. If he had not ever been informed about guns, I can guarantee he would do something like this, not knowing the implications. Kids that are never educated about guns cannot differentiate between what is real and what they see on tv. My older kids have been through hunter safety courses when they were 10 and began hunting with my husband shortly after. They’ve seen the damage a real gun does to a deer (as has my third grader). It is only because of this that we’ve never had this issue -well, that and we lock up our firearms. I blame the parents for being morons on this one. If you are going to keep firearms in your home, EDUCATE our children (don’t try to just hide them and hope for the best, a child is very resourceful in getting what they want).

where do you go(in life) from shooting someone in third grade??   Seriously messed up!

I hope the thumbs up from this little girl’s family means she will make it.  It’s sad to see kids with problems getting passed from school to school- it’s not helping anyone.  Neither does having a gun unsecured in the home.   Idiots!!

I wasn’t great at thinking through what I was doing as a kid, but I sure knew if I laid a finger on daddy’s gun I wouldn’t be able to sit down for a week. Some ramifications I had no problem understanding.

I used to have one of these. I wish I still had it now for home protection.

Do not underestimate pencils. They kill people too.

Although guns don’t misspell words. In fact, they can’t write at all.

(And obviously I can’t spell either or I wouldn’t have had to come back and edit this!)

Thank God guns are legal. Imagine what would happen if there were strong gun control laws?

• LeaveMeBe

Better than any 9mm I’ve ever shot. I wonder what they go for now days? Hubby and I have been looking at each getting “fun guns” (for self-protection, home protection and just banging around, ya know?) and you brought back memories of this little baby. I’m going to have him research it tonight. Thanks reapre!

• LeaveMeBe

We need stronger accident control laws. Those things are killing people!

• reapre

If you can even find a decent one for sale, I’d expect to pay a grand or more for an A grade. I had found a used one, B grade, back in 2007 for like $900 I want to say? They’re “rare” and very high quality, that fixed barrell and solid one piece design with the gas tube for a pistol was awesome, I’d love to track one down, if I had the money for it. Good luck finding one :) .

• LeaveMeBe

Wow. I just learned a lot from you, and I still don’t understand half of it. Thanks though. :) I am no gun expert, I just know what I like to shoot and what feels good in my hand. I would really like to have one again (ex-husband got to keep the last one) but am not looking in that price range at the moment.

• reapre

Fixed barrel refers to the barrel and the gun being one piece, and the barrel is NOT interchangeable.  Instead of a floating barrel (which is way more common for a spring load), that you can remove the barrel and replace it.  The gas tubes are used to return some of the gas from the round going off, to soften the recoil so the gun doesn’t kick as hard, making the gun more accurate.  The gas blow back and fluted chambers, also helps the brass get expelled from the gun, so you’ll still kick the brass out, even if your extractor is missing.

Idk what size your P7 was before…but the ones us men had were P7 M13′s.  We had a woman who had a lot of problems with the gun, so they swapped hers out for a P7M7, which has a thinner magazine (only 7 rounds single row, instead of our 13 rounds double row), so it had a smaller hand grip, and could accomodate her smaller hands.  (Just for reference if you actually end up finding another).

I’ve shot barettas, ruger, S&W, multiple different H&K, glock (which is garbage to me), Desert Eagle, colt..etc.  Pretty much all of the calibers.   The 9mm H&K P7, is by far my favorite.

http://www.hyattgunstore.com/heckler-koch-psp-p7-9mm-pistol-b-grade-west-german-police-surplus-the-ultimate-in-accurate-carry-gun.html

Yeah, appears upwards of a grand for a “new” one.  This is considered a “b grade”, so it’s going to have some visible wear, but no nicks or burrs in the actual metal components that would alter your fire…it’s just not going to be “as pretty”.  This is coming off at $859.99! So prices are still about the same from what they used to be.

The BIGGEST problem (that I remember) that we had with them, was the housing for the firing pin..if you can, stock up on them, they are very brittle, and can just “fall apart” in your hand if you’re not overly cautious and gentle while cleaning…

Sorry I’m so long winded…just helping you reminsce about the gun of your (our) dreams! =D.

Damn parents, I would sue their asses off. I hope the little girl pulls through.

Father: ‘My kid made a mistake’ in school shootingPORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) – Crying and wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, a frightened 9-year-old boy accused of accidentally shooting a classmate sat before a judge in juvenile court Thursday as his father gently rubbed his back. The scene _ coming a day after police said the boy accidently shot a fellow third-grader _ raised questions that will be played out in the legal system: Did he know what he did was wrong? And is anyone else responsible? Bail was set at $50,000 during the preliminary hearing, and ultimately the court will determine whether the third-grader will face criminal charges as an 8-year-old girl remains critically wounded. ”I just want everyone to know that my kid made a mistake. It was a terrible mistake,” the boy’s father, Jason Cochran, said outside the courthouse. If the bail is met, the boy would be released to his uncle and placed under house arrest. The uncle, Patrick Cochran, is the boy’s legal guardian and also sat by his nephew’s side in the courthouse. ”He’s a good kid. It’s all I can say,” said Patrick Cochran. “I apologize to the family of that girl. I really do.” [...] Todd Dowell of the Kitsap County prosecutor’s juvenile division said that under state law, children between 8 and 12 years old can face charges if a court determines the child has the capacity to understand an act is wrong. A capacity hearing in this case will be held in two weeks. Kitsap County officials said both the child’s mother and father have criminal records. Bremerton police Lt. Peter Fisher would not discuss whether authorities were investigating any adults in connection with Wednesday’s shooting, and he wouldn’t release further information about the investigation. The boy’s classmate remained in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound. Dr. Eileen Bulger said the girl will likely be at the hospital for several weeks and face further surgeries. She was sedated and on a ventilator but has woken up and interacted with her parents. On Wednesday, Bremerton police characterized the shooting at Armin Jahr Elementary as accidental. A bullet hit Kocer-Bowman in the abdomen and arm, according to authorities. Her father, John Bowman, thanked his daughter’s teacher in a statement, saying “had she not administered first aid and stopped the bleeding from the gunshot wound, this event would have surely been tragic.” The boy was being investigated for unlawful possession of a gun, bringing a dangerous weapon to school and third-degree assault charges. Authorities believe he got the weapon during a visitation with his mother over the weekend, according to charging documents released Thursday. The documents state that the boy told a classmate about five days ago that he was going to bring his “dad’s gun” to school and run away. The gun discharged after the boy slammed his backpack down on a desk, the documents said. Court documents show Jamie Lee Chaffin, who is listed as the boy’s mother in a child support case, sued the boy’s father for failing to pay child support. She also has been in and out of the court system, according to court documents. In 2005, she was arrested for possession of meth in Bremerton but pleaded guilty to a drug paraphernalia charge. She also was convicted of marijuana deliver and forgery. Twenty-seven states have some form of firearm child access prevention laws. Such laws can include criminal penalties for adults who allow children to get their hands on guns, but Washington is not one of those states, according to the San Francisco-based Legal Community Against Violence. Gail Hammer, a law professor at Gonzaga University in Spokane, said it is very rare for a child as young as 9 to be charged with a crime. Even if a young child is convicted, he wouldn’t be sent to an adult prison, Hammer said. ”Generally with young children they try to deal with it in the juvenile system,” she said. In Olympia, the Seattle Democrat who chairs the state Senate Judiciary Committee said there is a lapse in state law. “We do not hold people very accountable in this state for leaving guns around the house with small children,” Sen. Adam Kline said. Kline said that he would consider a bill to address it during the next legislative session next year, but didn’t sound hopeful of its chances. There have been shootings at schools that involved younger children. In 2000, 6-year-old Kayla Rolland, a Michigan first-grader, was fatally shot by a 6-year-old classmate who brought a gun from home. That classmate was not criminally charged; prosecutors said he was too young to be held responsible. Last year, a 6-year-old kindergartner at a Houston elementary school accidentally fired a gun as he was showing it off to friends, injuring three students. Bremerton Schools spokeswoman Patty Glaser said the school where Wednesday’s shooting happened, with about 400 students, was open for classes Thursday with 10 counselors available to talk with teachers, students and parents. The school is in a quiet residential neighborhood about 20 miles west of Seattle, across Puget Sound. Patrick Cochran said the boy’s grandmother adopted him, but she died a year ago and he became the child’s legal guardian. He said he lives with the boy’s father, and the boy’s two sisters. ”I just want him back home,” Patrick Cochran said.

LOL! Breathe reapre! Mine was a M7, even though the M13 fit my hand better. I have large hands but they are slender and my fingers are really long and slim and I just didn’t have the strength needed for the larger gun. I’ve always been a revolver girl, my baby was a S&W .357 Magnum snub nose, but it is kinda bulky to carry around. I think I’m going to go with a Walther PPK .380 for my concealed weapon. We have a shotgun and a S&W .38 Special that belonged to my grandmother for home protection right now and my husband wants a Glock 9mm. He can have it, I don’t care for them. Thanks so much for bringing back the memories of my H&K P7 though. It’s back on my wish list. :)

“The documents state that the boy told a classmate about five days ago that he was going to bring his “dad’s gun” to school and run away.”  The boy has two fuck ups as parents, and an uncle that has custody of him that doesn’t properly secure his firearms. No wonder he wanted to run away. I actually feel sorry for the kid, and if they don’t get him some help he’s going to follow in his parents footsteps. Hoping the little girl pulls through with minimal (physical) damage.

Third-grader Shot at School Undergoes Second Surgery

BREMERTON, Wash. (KTLA) — The 8-year-old girl who was shot in a third grade classroom underwent more surgery Friday and is still in critical condition.Meantime, the classmate accused of accidentally shooting her is out on bail.[...]She underwent emergency surgery on Wednesday and was taken back into surgery on Friday.
A hospital spokeswoman said Amina is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
“She was very close to death yesterday,” Dr. Eileen Bugler said Thursday afternoon.
“She has now stopped bleeding and she is critically ill and has a long road ahead of her.”
Bugler said her organs are severely damaged and she will have to undergo additional surgeries.
The bullet is still lodged near her spine, and doctors may leave it there.
“The investigation revealed a student brought a firearm to school,” the Bremerton Police Department said.
According to court documents, school staff and officers located a large-caliber semiautomatic handgun in a backpack in the classroom where Kocer-Bowman had been shot.
The backpack had been ripped open at the bottom where the muzzle had been pointed.
“At the end of the school day, the firearm discharged while in his backpack. A bullet went through the backpack, striking a nearby 8-year-old student.[...]

Family of 8-year-old girl shot in school wants answers

Amina Kocer-Bowman still can’t communicate, father says

There have been nights where I’ve cried myself to sleep wondering why this
happened to my daughter,” John Bowman said Thursday of Amina Kocer-Bowman, the
8-year-old shot at her Bremerton elementary school last week.

After five surgeries, doctors had to medically sedate Amina because she was
in so much pain. Although John said his daughter still can’t communicate with
him, he and his wife do what they can to let her know they’re there.

“We’ll talk to her and hold her hand. Yesterday my wife combed her hair for
the first time in over a week. That’s something she looked forward to every
morning before she went to school is just comb her hair,” said Bowman.

Seattle attorney Jeff Campiche is representing the Bowman family and feels
someone is at fault for allowing the 9-year-old boy charged in this case access
to the .45-caliber gun he brought to school Feb. 22. Campiche said there are a
lot of questions he wants answered.

“How come he was living with one of the unfit parents? How come he was
visiting the other unfit parent and how did he get this virtual handgun cannon?”
Campiche asked.

In Kitsap County Juvenile Court, prosecutors told the judge the boy’s parents
lost custody of him due to their criminal history. They boy’s grandmother
adopted him, but passed away. That’s when his uncle became his legal guardian,
but the boy’s father lives with them in the same home.

There have also been conflicting stories as to where the boy got the gun.
While his father believes his son got it from his mother’s boyfriend, the mother
of another child in Amina’s class heard a

So, the boy’s fuck up mother and her boyfriend, the people reportedly responsible for the gun, actually went to some out-of-state NASCAR function while the son is incarcerated and the poor girl he shot was fighting for her life.

They’ve both been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.  The boy’s former incubator is a convicted felon and was not allowed to own a firearm to begin with.  She’s also been charged with something else, but I can’t find what that was.  They’ll both be arrested once located.
