Police In Tense Two-Hour Stand-Off With Empty Car

February 19, 2012 at 12:19 pm by

San Diego, CA – San Diego Police could face possible charges of brutality after their Rodney King-like beating of an unoccupied car on eastbound Interstate 8 in La Mesa. The empty car looked to have barely survived the savage abuse at the hands of officers during the two-hour standoff.

The tense situation began in the early evening when, according to Lt. David Rohowits, a suspect in a home invasion robbery was to be arrested during a scheduled meeting with his parole officer. The suspect called just before the meeting to say his car had broken down on Interstate 8. The suspect then abandoned the empty vehicle by the roadside and left the area.

Officers arriving on the scene surrounded the vehicle and reported that the [already long gone] home invasion robbery suspect was refusing orders to get out of the stopped car. It is then that they unleashed their coordinated attacks on the unarmed car. One theory is that the savage treatment was possibly vigilantism because the car was thought to be an accomplice of the suspect.

Among the atrocities, news cameras photographed police dropping a huge limb on the roof and rear window of the vehicle, windows being smashed out, a police dog being allowed inside (without first being brushed), and – finally – the trunk being opened with a huge battering ram.  A video chronicling the abuse can be seen here.

After two-hours of relentless cruelty, the attack on the vehicle was brought to a stop. Officers, confirming that the vehicle was, in fact, empty, then resumed their search for the home robbery suspect elsewhere. An additional video here shows the police reaction (Hint:  Look for door kicking).

I, for one, am outraged. As a result of this attack, the vehicle is now in critical condition. If the vehicle does not pull through and if the physical attack on the vehicle is determined to have been unwarranted, it is possible that prosecutors could file serious charges against the officers. In that instance, it would seem that this would be a clear case of ‘vehicular homicide.’

  • malq

Couldn’t resist this article could ya kniption? Only you could turn a police clusterfuck into a vaudeville skit.

  • Josh

I really question the police mentality sometimes. Looks like officers created a more dangerous situation than they were trying to control.

  • princessgrandma

Oh, to be a fly on the wall for the “debriefing” on this one.  LOL

  • PlaysWithBalls

Okay, I can see a short standoff without realizing the suspect had fled, but two hours? Two friggin hours? *facepalm* and as my long distance boyfriend Josh said, it seems like they just made the entire situation more dangerous than it had to be, regardless of where the suspect was.

  • GGMon

    Great write up Kniption.

    That poor car.

  • Lena60

Lmao Kniption, great write-up thanks for the laugh.

Me too Josh, they were so gungho, they did not stop to think. They desereve to get some flack over this.

  • Josh

    Hello!!! =)

  • Good to see tax dollars hard at work.

  • Valerie

It was because the car was colored, wasn’t it? Would they have done that to a white car?

  • Josh

They were on vacation that night.

  • PlaysWithBalls

Nothing like a hairy man! Just the way I like em.

  • Deety

I’m pretty sure it was foreign. At least, it looks foreign, and that’s good enough for them!

  • Deety

“Police said they will not release anymore information about the suspect, because they are still actively searching for him.”

Umm, yeah. Because when he sees this video plastered all over the internet, he’ll never figure out that the police were planning on arresting him.

This reeks of CYA. If they were serious about catching him, they would want the public looking for him.

  • Josh

Looks like a 90s Chrysler, like an intrepid with gay rims.

  • Josh

I watched both videos, what was the score again? =)

  • So it was a gay, colored, foreign vehicle…well no wonder. Probably thought it had a bomb with skittle shrapnel under the rear.

  • msfantastic

Wow. Just wow. I’m curious what this guy did to cause that level of holy crap unloaded on his car. I will be anxiously awaiting kniptions follow up. Please dear GOD write a follow up on this!!!!

  • JohnQknowitall

Well at least the police in San Diego have found a way to make mob rule obsolete.

    hilarious

  • Sam

Yes, apparantly they have recruited them.

  • Eliza Berntsen

So are you telling me that in the two hours that they were molesting that poor, innocent car, not a single one policeman bothered to look inside of it whether it’s empty or not?!

  • Whatevn

I see this all the time in the city.  Police beating innocent black cars and sprinkling a little crack on them.

Im glad this video is out so the mass can see what normally goes covered up.

  • JGo555

    Hilarious write up @Kniption:disqus !

I should’ve read DD starting with the top article instead of making my way down the list so that I would’ve been feeling less angry & sad with this story.

  • curiousalways

oh great, tax dollars at work.  I wonder how much the car is going to sue the state for.  He sustained traumatic physical injuries and probably will sue for mental duress.  I’m sure Gloria Allred has already inserted herself as acting attorney on record.

Kniption-you are so damn funny.  Loved this!

  • VXIII

Typical San Diego Police Mentality, think they are taking brutality training from Joe Blow Arpaio

  • Oh these cops have a stand off with empty shit all the time. Toaster doesn’t pop out their toast fast enough, they pop off guns drawn, calling in for back up, and then they remember “oh I forgot to put bread in there.”

  • This is some funny shit, thanks kniption.

  • hicusdicus

OH, you noticed the gay rims…. What   a  surprise. Did it have nice big, fat black tires?

  • hicusdicus

Isn’t what they were hired for?
