HONEA PATH, SC – A South Carolina mother is facing child neglect charges after nurses found maggots in her sick infant’s diaper.
Police say 20-year-old Michelle Butler’s baby was suffering from an ear infection but she didn’t have any medicine to treat it because she had spilled it.
A witness told police that the 10-month-old had a fever and was pulling at his ears so they gave the infant Tylenol and informed Butler several times that the baby needed medical attention.
Butler finally called 911 and EMS arrived to transport the infant to the hospital. When nurses removed the baby’s diaper, live maggots fell out. To top that off, the baby’s blood and urine tested positive for marijuana.
Police went to Butler’s apartment where they did find baby food, formula and diapers, but noted that the apartment was very messy and dirty.
On Monday, police found Butler walking down the road and arrested her. She was charged with unlawful neglect of a child and later released on bond. Her baby was put in the care of the Department of Social Services.Tags: Child Abuse, Child Neglect, Crime, maggots, Michelle Butler, South Carolina
