Woman Charged After Maggots Found In Her Sick Baby’s Diaper

HONEA PATH, SC – A South Carolina mother is facing child neglect charges after nurses found maggots in her sick infant’s diaper.

Police say 20-year-old Michelle Butler’s baby was suffering from an ear infection but she didn’t have any medicine to treat it because she had spilled it.

A witness told police that the 10-month-old had a fever and was pulling at his ears so they gave the infant Tylenol and informed Butler several times that the baby needed medical attention.

Butler finally called 911 and EMS arrived to transport the infant to the hospital. When nurses removed the baby’s diaper, live maggots fell out. To top that off, the baby’s blood and urine tested positive for marijuana.

Police went to Butler’s apartment where they did find baby food, formula and diapers, but noted that the apartment was very messy and dirty.

On Monday, police found Butler walking down the road and arrested her. She was charged with unlawful neglect of a child and later released on bond. Her baby was put in the care of the Department of Social Services.

How long does it take for maggots to appear? That poor baby, it’s little bottom must have hurt so bad. I feel awful when my son gets rashes (he is lactose intolerant and if someone gives him milk he gets horrible poop and rashes no matter how well he is cleaned). I think they need to make her sit in a diaper full of other people’s shit for the rest of her life.

Common house fly larvae hatch between eight and twenty hours after being laid. I’d figure that flies wouldn’t be finding an unchanged diaper immediately, so you can add a few more hours to that figure.

This baby was severely neglected. Maggots are a last defense against decay of flesh. Flies have to lay their larvae in it. For them to lay, there has to be putridity. I think that is the chemical scent. There are many in decomposition. Long story short, There was decaying flesh before the maggots showed up.

That said, Maggots are very helpful in preventing infection of diseased flesh. They eat all the dead stuff so bacteria doesn’t get a chance to set in. Some wounds or open sores benefit from maggot therapy. Ok I’m hungry, time for lunch.

Stories like this make it embarassing to be from SC. I was born and raised here and have lived here my whole life. Amazingly, I still managed to learn to read, write, make it through college and brush my damn hair before I leave the house. Cedric is sorta right, medical maggots are generally raised and kept in sterile environments, because of the potential for cross contamination from farm to sore. That doesn’t mean that they inherently come with bacteria, they do hatch from eggs which are sterile enclosed environments. Flies are dirty, but that doesn’t automatically get passed on to the next generation.
Flies don’t just lay their eggs on rotten food. So, hopefully it was just the manure that attracted them.House flies typically lay eggs on animal feces and garbage.

As bad as the maggots are, I cringe at the neglected ear infection. I’ve suffered many ear infections throughout my life, and let me tell you, those things can hurt so bad they’ll make a grown person cry, much less a baby. And beyond the pain, chronic ear infection in an infant affects hearing and therefore language development, as well as increasing the chances of infections later in life (like mine). Not the kind of thing you can just “spill the medicine” and not deal with. I’m 5 months pregnant and already buying little caps to try to prevent them as much as possible for my baby.

She didn’t clean the damned house…. it was nasty. Soooo…..depending on what the nastiness consisted of, say, maybe piles of garbage or maybe rotting food found on plates that has obviously been there for a while, and so forth. All that would certainly contribute to the fly population considerably. I’d think that not changing the baby’s diaper just gave the flies another place to lay their eggs.

I’m thinking, though, that if the house was neglected, the baby was waaaaay neglected. I hope SC knows how to put the child in a safer environment and the baby’s not just sent back to this slob.

Hopefully your baby will never have them. I have never had one myself thank gawd, but have known people who have.My step daughter as a baby had ear infections as a baby. When the doctors went to put tubes in her ears to help with the dranage her heart stopped. She is ok and does not have trouble with her ears. Its scary to have a child go through this especially if it is chronic.

I was a young mom myself. Married with 2 by the age of 24. I never even really thought of myself as “young” but just a “mom.” My parents taught me how to clean and run a house, how to cook, how to handle finances, etc. I got a job and earned the money to buy my first car outright at 18. I got my first apartment and paid for it on my own (no mommy and daddy paying for rent) been independent ever since. All I can figure is that today’s young mothers just had bad/neglectful parents themselves. They seem to know very little about running a household or caring for children. The ball is getting dropped somewhere.

I’ve noticed with some of the young people I know that they have none of what I call “home training.” When I spend the night at someone’s house, when I get up in the morning I make up my bed, I clean up after myself. If someone cooks me dinner I ask if I can help with the dishes. When I see someone struggling with their groceries, I help them bring them in. None of that from these younguns. It’s like it never even occurs to them to help out, and even when they are explicitly asked they often get a sour look on their faces.

I can’t find those nice smelling wipes in a big box in town. I would have to travel to the big town & go to WALMART to get the nice smelling ones in a big box. I’m subjected to use the “scentless” ones because the rest of the town’s children have sensitive skin.

Trust me honey, you’ll find a lot of these anywhere in all walks of life. I live in New York and I have a friend who’s family is exactly what you described. It’s a shame she’s even related to them because she is nothing like them at all. She’s going to college, has a job while they do nothing but steal her pay and gamble when her school money comes in. They also have the nerve to put her down and treat her like a second class citizen when she’s the only one providing income and doing something with her life.

it’s a couple of generations of backward, uneducated, ghetto bitch-assness that still lives on today. I do give a few of them credit as some of them have moved away from the main causes of their problems (i.e. Their mom) and rebuild their lives hopefully for the best but that’s another story.

It pains me that you said “most” young women. Maybe I just live in an area where ours are an exception to the rule, but my daughter (18) and her circle of friends (16 and up) love cooking and hanging out in the kitchen and learning new things, they do their own laundry, they clean because it needs to be done and they like things organized and tidy. They even clean my house when they’re out of school for the day because they want to do something nice for me. I am lucky I guess because I know more nice and helpful teens than lazy ones.

Their alc content is also different at grocery stores/gas stations from liquor stores. I remember I showed the cashier at the grocery store my DL which was Texas, and she said hon, put this case back and go across the street to the liquor store if you’re from Texas this will be like water to you……I swear, before I moved those people at the liquor store knew my name. Cooking for my BFs is something I pride myself on. I’ll may get blasted by some ladies, but I like to take care of my boys the way I think a lady should. That doesn’t mean I cook every night and have hot cocoa ready, but that does mean I can cook a good meal and I know how to clean. Because I work full time they take up these tasks as well, but if I had a son a brought home a girl who couldn’t keep house I’d tell him to run.
I’m lucky enough that I’ve always had someone or me able to pay someone to clean for me and to eat out once or thrice a week, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t do the work.

My son’s girlfriend is the sweetest little thing, and she knows how to clean but not how to cook. Her mother wasn’t a good cook so she never really learned. I hope this bitch lost permanent custody for this atrocity; at 20 she is old enough she should be old and mature enough to take proper care of her baby. It is not like she is a 14 year old kicked to the street and didn’t know better. I worked with a woman that was 14 when she had her child and kicked to the streets by her “Christian” parents who wanted her to go to her aunt’s and get rid of him. She chose to keep her baby and put her baby as her first priority in her life and had a wonderful, well cared for son who was half her age when I met her, after getting help from a church.

It would take at least 3 days for a maggot to be in a diaper. It is beyond neglect; it is abuse this woman’s actions!
