She may not completely remember, but it will absolutely still affect her. This type of abuse is very conducive to reactive attachment disorder; this little girl is going to most likely have a lot of trouble forming healthy relationships and bonds, and she will probably have behavioral issues throughout her childhood. Not many people can remember things from when they were that young, very few can. But this will still affect her. It also depends on how sever the abuse was, I imagine. But unfortunately I don’t know how good her chances are of coming out unscathed.

Indeed, I hadn’t thought of it that way. I don’t know that she will completely understand the full weight of that, however, until she is a bit older (or at least out of toddlerhood). Reactive attachment disorder is in very young children, apparently there is not clear information on it’s presence past the age of five years. So while she is only 6 months to a year now, the first five years of her life are still going to be difficult following the effects of the abuse. You’re so absolutely right, though, I hadn’t even thought of how it was going to be when she gets older and finds that her parents went to jail for sexually abusing her. Hopefully, they won’t get her back, and that way, she won’t have to find out they abused her from… you know, more abuse, I guess. I can’t imagine how fucked up it would be to find out that your parents sexually abused you (both of your parents) as a helpless baby.

This site is a double-edged sword. The intent is to shame the perpetrators, but I think there’s a significant chance some victims will eventually also end up feeling shamed, that their victimization is public knowledge. That’s why I get so pissed when commentors post the FB’s of victims. Not everyone wants the world to know they were raped or that their parent/uncle/grandpa is a sick fuck.

Just read some of the comments on his FB page, and it seems he was picked on for a being a creepy weirdo in school, and now the kids that stuck up for him are sorry they did. I’m gonna get jumped on for this but fuck it…sometimes I believe that when a kid is being picked on by other kids there a fucking reason. Kids can sense when someone is fucked up, and they react by taunting or shunning which now gets labeled as bullying, when really it’s kids sensing that there’s a problem with that person. The wiki article says that it’s hard to have clear info on it after five years, and I was wondering if perhaps it just manifests into something that we diagnose differently, or maybe just that it does in fact continue past that age, and that seems to have been the case with the girl you know. I kind of figured that if you have trouble forming bonds when you are that young, that you would probably still have great difficulty with it later in life as well, especially if you feel you cannot pinpoint or truly understand the true source of your problems, or trust anyone enough to form strong bonds and relationships. One additional thought: My understanding regarding trauma severity is seated mainly in the way adult authority figures handle the situation. If there is any strong and angry condemnation conveying the criminal acts to the victim child, the victim will assume shame that should be the attackers. If the act is treated in front of the victim as an act that was simply wrong when the child discusses it, the child will be healthier in regard of the incident.

Sometimes your responses seem to be intentionally missing the point of the original comment, just so you can disagree. If ordinarily reasonable commentors seem inclined to be hostile toward you, that may be why.

It’s very important to not assume a child is damaged goods.  Making sure they’re set up with the necessary resources is important, but so is minimizing victimhood rather than encouraging it or even assuming it’s automatic.
