Man Blames Bullying On His Child Pornography And Bestiality Charges

Hartlepool, UK - A UK court has jailed Gareth Francis Owen, 22, indefinitely after a judge branded him a danger to the public. Owen had been sentenced two weeks ago to five months incarceration for causing unnecessary suffering to his Labrador after admitting having sex with the dog. This additional sentence comes in response to Owen pleading guilty to added charges of making and possessing both “extreme” and “child” pornography.
Owen’s troubles began when he took his computer to a shop to be repaired. A call to the police led to the discovery of ‘indecent photos’ of children and a ‘sickening collection’ of bestiality pictures. Court records describe there being evidence of several ‘vile’ movies which had been deleted. In addition, Owen’s probation report described the defendant writing pornographic accounts involving explicit sexual activities between ‘adult males and Pokemon characters.’
When considering the charge of the assault on the dog, Prosecutor Lynne Dalton said Owen admitted having sexual relations with a number of family pets and horses from the age of 14.
“The defendant revealed that he was 14 when there had been his first sexual contact with a friends dog. There had also been indecent contact with two previous dogs owned by him as well as horses.” Dalton said. “He also declared his sexual activity [began] with his current pet, named “Andrex,” when it was 14 months old. [Owen described that Andrex] didn’t start to show any interest [in having sex] until the dog was ‘sexually mature.’”

Defense attorney Salina Akhtar responded by telling the the court of Owen’s ‘troublesome upbringing.’ “[Owen] didn’t have much of an education due to bullying, which at times resulted in him being hospitalised, and he left school without any qualifications.” Akhtar said.
“He explained that he was having a relationship with his dog, which he accepts was ‘not right.’ Akhtar added.
The additional charges of child and extreme pornography led to similar arguments.
The cache of photos that police found included 72 ‘indecent’ photos of children. The court heard psychiatric testimony that Owen ‘despised children’ and felt no empathy for those being abused in the photos. This was substantiated by a court report that Owen had actually been in contact over the internet with a girl who was featured in one of photos that Owen possessed. During that interaction, Owen reportedly encouraged the girl – who was 12-years-old at the time – to ‘take part in further depravity’ by continuing to participate in the photographic sessions.
According to court documents, the bestiality found in Owen’s possession included 126 ‘extreme’ pictures ’featuring dogs and horses.’ The content was found on his computer and a memory stick obtained during the investigation.
The defense argued that Owen was saddled by a preoccupation with sex – thinking about it ’85% of the time.’ Defense attorney Nigel Hedley added that Owen considers that he’s in this situation ‘because he is a loner.’
“He has found it difficult all his life interacting with others of his age and older.” Hedley said.
When delivering his ruling, the judge noted that Owen was not just a ‘passive consumer.’ He was described as being ‘in contact with other perverts’ and being viewed on internet forums ‘as someone who could offer help and advice on downloading filth.’
It should be noted that the indefinite term does have a low minimum sentence. Owen is required to serve only two years behind bars. The indefinite term means that Owen will have no automatic release. The judge told Owen that he will only be released when parole chiefs decide he is considered safe to society after review.
Owen had been banned from owning or taking care of any animal for the rest of his life for the bestiality conviction. Owen is now banned from working with children. He will now also have to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register when released.
