Seven Kids Charged With Beating 13 Year Old Girl On Florida School BusOcala, FL – Police have arrested seven kids, ages 12 to 14, for their part in the brutal beating of a 13-year-old girl who was riding their school bus for the first time Friday.

After the Liberty Middle School student boarded the bus, none of the 70+ students on board would let her sit beside them. So she sat in her sister’s lap. Teasing ensued before someone threw a shoe at the girl, hitting her in the head. When the girl threw the shoe back, all hell broke loose.

The kids were on this girl faster than Jaded on bacon and proceeded to beat the crap out of her. Police say she was punched and kicked at least 15 times during the melee and lost consciousness at some point. It was so bad that the bus driver had to stop at a different school for help after failing to stop the fighting on two occasions.

Police interviewed all the students and reviewed surveillance footage taken on the bus before arresting seven on charges of felony battery and disorderly conduct. They have since been released to their parents and have been suspended from school.

“If you’re in the midst of committing a felony battery, and we find out about it, we’re going to arrest you. It’s just simply not allowed in Marion County, and for these seven students, they have to realize that there is consequences to their actions,” Marion County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Judge Cochran said as I stood up and slow clapped.

The victim was taken to the hospital suffering from a mild concussion and muscle spasms. She has since returned home.

Wtf? I have only ever seen kids that age fight in a group like that over drugs or “gang” issues. I can’t imagine that taunting someone turned into that.

Why would the bus driver even move the bus with a child sitting on someone else’s lap? That really seems rather unsafe to me. It sounds to me like the driver has very little control of the kids already.

  • Anonymous

I pray everynight that nothing like this happens to my kids. Not just for the obvious reasons, but I’d have a real hard time not beating the snot out of every one of those kids..

plus 70+ kids on a bus??? What was it a double decker?!?!

  • Anonymous

How the hell is this little girl supposed to return to school? This was her FIRST TIME on that bus. I hope her parents are in a position to have a “Plan B” in getting this child to and from school…if the district can even keep her safe while there. With this kind of brutal mob mentality, I’d be very concerned about retaliation by the friends of those charged, both in school and out. It’s the kind of thinking that goes along with this type of viciousness.

Not that she could do much against so many, but I wonder what the sister did while all this was going on.

And this is another reason why homeschooling has become so popular.

I had to look at the demographic makeup of this city. Being the lazy bastard than I am I used Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocala,_Florida).

As of the census[3] of 2000:The racial makeup of the city was 72.86% White, 22.14% African American, 0.36% Native American, 1.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.81% from other races, and 1.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.74% of the population.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,888, and the median income for a family was $38,190. Males had a median income of $29,739 versus $24,367 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,021. About 13.2% of families and 18.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.6% of those under age 18 and 9.8% of those age 65 or over.Ocala is the headquarters of Emergency One, a worldwide designer and manufacturer of fire rescue vehicles.

I am pretty sure it was the Pacific Islanders or the Native Americans are at fault over this one (probably both groups), because if it were any of the larger groups it would be happening all the time. Right? ;)

I am glad they arrested the terrorizing little shits who hurt this poor girl. Maybe the incident will keep them out of jail later.

On our bus, sometimes people had to sit on other people, because it was that crowded. It’s not like a school bus, with no seatbelts or padding, is a safe place to be in the event of a crash anyway. It baffles me that buses are still so unsafe — I’m just surprised people haven’t sued over the seatbelt thing.

This bus wasn’t overcrowded though. The article says no one would let her sit by them. A driver can use a radio to call the school if they need help, I saw our driver do it after some kids vandalized the bus once. She pulled that shit over, radioed the school, and waited for the resource officer to send out a cop. So there were other options. Personally I would have made sure that every child had an ass in a seat before the bus moved an inch and if anyone had a problem I would have called the school so a dean would be waiting outside as soon as the bus pulled into the school.

..And when I say I “saw” this shit, I mean I was that poor kid a majority. I was excluded when I was overweight (which means talking behind your back and being scared of you to your face), and when I started losing that, I definitely had nothing to protect me from how cruel kids are, it wasn’t until I hauled some ass and took some names that they left me alone a majority. Kids like this are definitely nothing like dogs. You beat up one, the rest run away. Plus dogs would help one of their own.

I was watching a show on how to survive in a natural or other disaster, and history has show that children are the most brutal. When most of the adults have been removed like in Germany during the holocaust, children ate any animal and whatever. They have not formed the capacity yet to understand  the depth of their actions. They live more by the moment.

I think there’s a lot to the story that we’re missing. This was her first time on the bus, but she may not have been a complete stranger. Other riders knew her sister, or may have known her from another school or around the neighborhood. I’d really like to know the back-story.

Decent adult leadership could have prevented this. As soon as her finding a seat was a problem, the driver (or assistant, which a bus with 70 kids should really have) needed to step up and tell the other kid’s to stop acting like douches, that that kind of behavior isn’t acceptable. Stop it before they manage to egg each other on to shoe-throwing.

This is a public school, and ultimately, the public is to blame. How many people are involved in their local schools? Why should over-worked, under-paid public teachers go the extra mile when the parents won’t pay any attention to their own kid’s education? “Oh, I’m so busy, I don’t have time to join the PTA, I work!” You can tell yourself what you want, but your kids see what your priorities are, and they set their own accordingly.

Most of the kids on that bus could have told you what was coming. This attitude was building for a long time. 70 kids on the bus, that’s 140 parents who could have had a clue.

  • NY_Mommy

This is so sad. Poor girl. Kids are getting worse and worse. If my son or daughter EVER got involved in something like this they would be begging to go to jail. I would volunteer them to clean up poop at the animal shelter, no tv for a year, have them scrubbing my baseboards with a toothbrush. And other hard labor punishments that would give plenty of reflection time. But most importantly I would drag my child straight over to this girls house so they could beg for her forgiveness.

It’s amazing how much fear can do. Although the nerds and the stoners all loved me, the douchebags didn’t know me whatsoever and apparently thought I might light them on fire (eyeliner and cigarettes are apparently super intimidating in Suburbia), so I learned I could tell people to shut the fuck up when they targeted defenseless kids in high school, then another person would join me, then another, until the assholes kept their opinions to themselves in front of me.

Thank god high school, and ESPECIALLY middle school, is a once in a lifetime experience. So many of those kids deserve to be slapped silly.

My daughter had something eerily similar happen to her when she was in 11th grade. It was her first day ever being in a public school, and her first time ever riding in a public bus. She had decided to attend a magnet high school for the performing arts in Tampa. Around here, all magnet schools are located in the center of the ghetto.

When she got on the girls’ bus (yeah, they HAD to separate the girls from the boys) every seat had one big ass in it, turned to the side, with the student’s feet taking up the complete bench-type seat.

My daughter asked the driver where she could sit. The driver told the girls to turn around and sit straight. The girls started YELLING at the bus driver, calling her horrible names and then calling her a “racist.”

The driver radio’ed for another backup bus. My daughter and a few other girls (who also had been denied seats) were put on the new bus and taken to school. The “segregated” bus transported the lil gang bangers on to school.

When everyone arrived at the school, officials asked about what happened. The outcome was that the first bus driver was suspended without pay FOR BEING RACIST! My daughter said that the woman driver had not said one racist word.

And they continued to use two separate girl’s buses (both half full or less) for the rest of the school year.

I think that we would all be shocked at what goes on with these school buses everyday that doesn’t make it into the news.

  • http://twitter.com/AngelsMom0806 Angels Mom

Truthfully I wasn’t a part of that crowd either but I HATE bully’s and always have so if someone was a bully and they got beat down, I can’t lie and say that I didn’t add a lick or two.

  • Prominent Prozac

I didn’t get my respect due until people found I was the daughter of a “big shot” and a “dangerous” man (Yeah right, my father is a teddybear/douchebag, of course that’s just to me) Made pretty quick friends with the “popular” stoners who took decent care of me and I was already friends with the nerds, wasn’t hard after a bit until I had those bitches that liked to attack with a “pack” mentality..Didn’t work out so well since I beat her up and her friends ran away, but you know how that is.

The thing that kept me going most of the time I hope this kid hears about, those are the kids that peek in high school, and end up pregnant before prom.

  • http://twitter.com/AngelsMom0806 Angels Mom

Pardon me if this was asked or mentioned and I missed it but where was the sister when they were all jumping on the girl?

  • Prominent Prozac

  • Athena

The kids were suspended?  This shit happens, in part, because districts don’t take it seriously enough.  This kind of bullshit would have resulted in emergency expulsion at any school I went to.  If these parents are suddenly faced with the pain in the ass that is getting a problem child reassigned to another district, maybe they’d pay closer attention to their child’s tendencies.

  • Prominent Prozac

That’s kinda like saying “If you see a kid getting beat half to death, or their parents are starving them, why should you care if their parents don’t?” …Not logical.

I certainly wasn’t to blame for the fact my parents didn’t give a fuck about me.

I got in about 8 fights my freshmen year, my dad was called to come to the school, he said what the hell, I said dad they were picking on this guy and I saved him. He told me to let others fight their own battles because I was getting into to much trouble and I would be kicked out if they called again. I was just smarter from there on in, didn’t let bullies pick on people in my presence.

  • http://rebeccacarterbooks.com MoonlitRebecca

Actually I am from “the hood” and again…let me stress this…Individually or in small cliques people pick on other kids. But I have not ever seen (without drugs or prior violence involved) this many kids jump another kid. If you saw it happen “in the hood” then it was probably drug or “gang” related. I am not saying that this girl is involved in anything like that BUT I am saying that it is rare for that kind of group violence based on just bullying.

I’m talking about the difference between teachers who do the bare minimum to do their jobs, and teachers who actually make a difference in their communities. More teachers would be inspired to do the latter if they felt like parents gave a fuck. And maybe less kids would act like complete shits at school if they thought their parents would hear about it (We often assume these parents wouldn’t do anything if they knew how badly their spawn acted, but I think a lot of them just don’t know). And maybe kids would care more about their education if they didn’t see that their parents are too busy to attend conferences/games/plays/PTA meetings, but manage to ‘make time’ to watch Survivor.

Faculty that has no community support is only going to do a mediocre job, at best. We can wish all day that that weren’t true, but it is, and I find it hard to blame them for becoming cynical and apathetic fairly quickly. I don’t see a logical connection between that and advocating standing by and watching a kid starve to death, though.

    “This bus wasn’t overcrowded though.”

I would have to disagree with you here – While the number of children who can be seated on a school bus Varies depending on the size of the school bus. Normally, you’d be looking at 44 to 48 passengers, plus the driver, which would put you at 23 to 25 seats (including the driver’s seat) for a full sized bus. There is no way that a bus containing 70+ students would not be overcrowded – which is most likely part of the reason there was an issue on the bus in the first place. The kids are all packed in there and then here’s this funny looking girl that just moved to town wanting them to scoot over and be even more packed together – “Fuck off unknown weird girl – not happening – seats fucking FULL” – I can see this happening.

    “So there were other options.”

I think the driver did an outstanding job – just remember – when you need the police right now they are only 10 minutes down the road;and a lot of ass can get kicked in 10 minutes.

  • Prominent Prozac

I do actually. I see the “logical” connection.

There are a few teachers I’m sure that go above and beyond, not because they have to, but because they WANT to.

Just because some parents don’t care about their kids, doesn’t mean no one should. Not every parent is going to be involved, but that doesn’t mean those kids deserve to slip through the cracks. I had a shit childhood, and not a single teacher in the school I was first at gave a fuck about me, along with my parents so I rarely went to school. They were mean to me, they embarassed me, they ignored me, why?Because they could. Even though I had it bad enough at home.

I got transferred when my mother moved (new boyfriend, insert the start of most of my traumas) and suddenly I was in a new school, public just the same, but these teachers..I could almost cry now when I look back and remember how good they were. Not a single one didn’t go above and beyond. For the first time in my life I had found adults I could respect, who I trusted. Though you guys may not see it here, I’m twice the human being I never would have been without them. I could barely even read until I got there, I was so far behind the other kids I was in the fifth grade before I finally caught up, and then I was unstoppable and ahead of everyone else. My mother didn’t give a shit about me, when my third grade teacher caught wind of how I’d NEVER even been in or even around a library except for school wise, she gave me a pass to take out as many books as I wanted. One day I went to school, and I couldn’t stop crying, my fourth grade (one of my favorites) put her sweater around me, she held me close, and she told me it’d be alright. I got my body beat for the last time by that sick fucking asshole that day.

These people knew obviously, my parents didn’t care about me, (wasn’t hard to tell) but they still did right by me, all teachers should be like that, regardless of parental involvement, instead they all think like my first school, if you can skip on the “losers” nobody cares about, do it. Hell, I even had a decent middle school experience until I moved again. Teachers that go “Oh well if your parents give a shit, I will too” need to hang up their hats.

    Fuck, I just remembered!

This happened to me once. I was in the 6th grade. I had reminded the Spanish teacher of a test or quiz & the whole class decided to beat me up. This was private Catholic school and not the cheapest or most expensive one.

So at the end of the period, they all gathered, two held me against the corner in between floors in the stairs, and the 28-30 some 6th graders each slammed either a notebook or a hard cover MATH book on my head. I remember they let me go after each had a go at me & ran towards their classroom. I remember sliding down the wall & not remembering (this was 20 some years ago) until I saw 2 girls from my class (that didn’t hit me) pointing at me. I think I got up and walked to the classroom & the girls told the principal.

Either way, the “brains of the beating” (2 boys) got suspended and got 3 demerits, and the rest that “got” me got like 5- 7 demerits.

All because I reminded the teacher of a quiz. The assholes all failed, like they were going to then had they not beaten me & had the teacher not remembered.

When they do fight, they are often unable to fight one on one so it turns into one group vs another. I work in schools every day.

I went back looking for the original article and they have pulled it. Perhaps because those names were listed? I’m thinking this could be classified as a hate crime. Why are we only able to hear about white on black hate crimes?

That’s good to hear; I just hope they’re not automatically reassigned.  The parents should have to handle the transfer themselves.  Speaking from experience, even a totally innocent out-of-district transfer is a pain.  If the parents have to handle the transfer themselves, they will be forced to interface with district officials a bit more than I bet they do currently.

  • Athena

I rather liked the idea of ISS, myself.  They phased that out while I was still in high school, but, whenever I knew any kid to get suspended, most had two working parents who didn’t bother to stay home to monitor their child, so it was, quite literally, like a mini vacation for the child.  At least in ISS, they had direct supervision and were forced to study… ?

Do you really THINK hate crime charges will be applied? I’ll betcha it won’t happen. It will likely be chalked up to be a “misunderstanding” or some made up bullshit like that. Same thing happened to another white girl and she even had teeth knocked out. If I’m correct, not much happened to the shits that did it.
Why should only certain races be protected? Do a search and you indeed find many black on other race assaults. This PC crap has gone too far. These aren’t mere scuffles, they’re full on beatings and it’s way past time it’s acknowledged.

  • Anonymous

That was not how it went down in my school. The teacher in charge of ISS was even less thrilled to be there than the kids and it was pretty much fuck off time. Saturday school was a bitch though, because your parent was pissed they had to take you there and you were pissed you missed a whole day of your weekend.

In Florida they go to ALC (Alternative Learning Center) which is basically like sending a kid to Juvie that they get to leave at night. I am sooo relieved we have this type of consequence in our arsenal. Fuck, a few years ago in our district a bunch of the youthful criminally minded idiots that were incarcerated there decided they didn’t want to go back and torched it over the winter holidays. SMH

  • Athena

As long as you’re doing searches, you should totally do one on hate crime stats by race.  If you do, you will see that black people are convicted of a disproportionately HIGH number of hate crimes.  If I recall correctly, blacks comprise roughly 12% of the population but have been convicted of roughly 18% of hate crimes.  That doesn’t sound like only certain races being protected to me.

Believe me, the courts are not shielding blacks from charges of any sort.  If hate crime charges aren’t filed, it’s only because there’s no evidence of racial motivation.

  • LeaveMeBe

I think Cedric and some others would probably like that but it makes no difference to me. *shrugs*

I’m sorry for what you went through. I still don’t see where in my comments I seem to be saying that we should just give up on individual kids. I was talking about a general environment at a school where parents seem to actually care about their kids’ education. I certainly wasn’t advocating selecting who to educate based on individual parents’ involvement. Sorry if you took it that way…

My experiences with different schools seemed to show that schools with higher parent involvement also had higher teacher involvement. We can talk all day about how teachers should be, but human nature is what it is, and if none of the parents care, the teachers’ reactions to that over time are going to be what they’re going to be.

I would really like to know what you feel the reasons are for the second school you mention having such better faculty than the first.

You’re really not getting the point. So let it go.

If you’re not saying they should give up on certain kids, then what are you saying?Give up on all of them at once in the schools with a lot of parents that don’t care? Think about it.

As a general enviroment, it shouldn’t be about whose parents bake cookies for PTA and whose is drinking at home, the children have no control over that. Perhaps you think it’s acceptable for them to say “who gives a fuck” I however don’t, and though I understand how it happens, I don’t find that to be something that should be a factor in a good teacher and how they treat students. If a person never should have been a teacher to begin with?I’m sure they would act that way.

(Not trying to be harsh or snippy, just not going to argue about it. It is what it is)
