Cassie Cotta’s mother contacted police on New Year’s Eve after her daughter failed to show up for work. The last time anyone had any contact with her was at around 11pm on December 30 when she left a post on her Facebook account that read “Blah blah blah.. Cheers people! Fuck it.”
Cassie’s husband, 33-year-old Brent Cotta, was the last person to see Cassie alive and told police she left for a party with a man named “Brandon.” He also commented on that last post of Cassie’s, joining in with concerned friends and expressing his concerns over Cassie’s party habits and the people she hung out with.
The Ft. Smith PD informed Cassie’s family that due to New Years Eve celebrations they would not be able to form a search until January 1, so Cassie’s friends and family started a grassroots effort to locate her using Youtube and Facebook to get the word of her disappearance out to the public.
A loving, concerned Brent can be seen in this video bullshitting reporters. “Cassie is colorful, she’s irritable, she’s blunt, she’s beautiful,” he tells reporters as he wears sunglasses to conceal the black eye I hope Cassie gave him. “She’s perfect.” In this recently released mugshot you can clearly see the shiner someone gave him.
This was recorded just hours before searchers found Cassie’s dead body 50 to 60 feet off of Gun Club Road and police would take him into custody on a charge of first-degree murder. Brent is being held in the Sebastian County Detention Center without bond.
According to police, evidence found in the couple’s home and one of their vehicles is what led them to the rural area where Cassie’s body was found. At this time, the Ft. Smith PD is staying pretty tight lipped with further details aside from saying there were no obvious signs of how Cassie was killed and that she was murdered Friday night. Friends of Cassie describe Brent as a “jealous and controlling person” with violent tendencies who had a habit of “flying off the handle” and mistreating Cassie both verbally and physically.
Sgt. Grubbs says his department has received several domestic disturbance calls on the couple and both of have been arrested for domestic assault and battery. Brent has been arrested twice, and Cassie once back in 2009 during an incident with her ex-husband. Some feel the police and the press were slow to respond to Cassie’s disappearance because of this reason while others feel it was because Cassie didn’t fit the “pretty white girl” mold the media usually slobbers over. And as we’ve seen here time and time again, more press = more police.
My condolences to the friends of family of Cassie Cotta and I will keep you updated as this case progresses.Tags: Arkansas, Brent Cotta, Cassie Cotta, Crime, Domestic Violence, Missing, Murder
