Another Woman Killed By A Scumbag Elevator

December 14, 2011 at 1:01 pm by

Another Woman Killed By A Scumbag ElevatorNew York, NY – Less than a week ago we reported on a woman in California who was crushed by the elevator she tried to climb out of when it became stuck between floors. Today, in New York, a woman was killed as she was getting on an elevator.

Officials say the woman was stepping into an elevator on the first floor of a midtown Manhattan office building when it suddenly shot upward. The woman, who was half in the car when it began its sudden ascent, was crushed between the elevator and the shaft wall. Some reports say her foot or leg was caught in the closing doors, while other say the elevator doors remained open the entire time.

Either way, the elevator was not done being a complete dick and became stuck between floors. Two other women in the elevator at the time of the incident were not injured but were taken to the hospital for a psychological evaluation. I’m sure what they went through was traumatic, but pales in comparison to what happened to Karen Steinau. She had to sit in a stuck elevator with the head of the man it had just decapitated.

The cause of the elevator’s malfunction is currently being investigated, but I doubt they have the tools required to diagnose EVIL.

it reminds me of the stephen king story where the trucks become homicidal, except it’s elevators this time lol.

I’m thinking the elevators are just looking out for our health and well-being. Every elevator horror story pushes me that much closer to walking my fat ass up the stairs. Thanks Scumbag elevators.

  • Coyote

That’s it, I’m taking the stairs from now on.

  • CT

Damn it, from here on out I’m taking only escalators.  They never kill people.  Oh wait.  Never mind.

  • Bulletproof

Countdown to the elevator- control activists pushing for a total ban of elevators in 3..2..1..

Why couldn’t it be stairs that are killing people?  Ug, now I can’t be lazy for fear of a-hole elevators.

  • shopaholic

Reminding myself to never try to get off an elevator if it is stuck between floors.  Or hell, just take the stairs. Yikes!

  • Steph[anie]

I foresee a new bill drafted by Congress: The Elevator Protection Act
In it, they will outline the dangers of these tools obviously crafted by Satan himself, and lament on the reasons why we need to be protected from them. Soon, we will be forced to exclusively use stairs *shudders*

  • Valerie

I think I will stick to the stairs. My ass will thank me!

Totally happened on Final Destination 105….errr…one of them.

Anyway, the Elevatorocalypse has begun. No one is safe.

Three elevator deaths in such a short time got me wondering if it happens more than we think, or actually hear about…sooooo I googled it. (I <3 Google!)  I found an article on Consumerwatch.com.

Statistics of Elevator FailureCity and state governments are fairly diligent in ensuring that annual public elevator inspections are carried out and reported properly. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is not authorized to regulate elevators as it does other products such as automobiles or personal equipment, so elevators and elevator parts are not subject to federal accident inspections or parts recalls. Without a requirement of public parts recalls due to defect, there is little widely available printed information regarding elevator defects. When an elevator or escalator product is identified by the manufacturer as having a design defect, it is only required to send out a product letter by certified mail to equipment owners. Thus, the press and general public rarely find out about such faulty products until deaths or injuries have occurred. What is known is that about 27 people are killed in elevator accidents each year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the CPSC, which does report on injury and death associated with elevators. Injuries from elevators affect about 10,200 people per year, with the majority of these accidents being related to elevator door malfunction, carriage misalignment with floors, and passenger safety vulnerabilities. The U.S. Labor Department’s Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries reports that half of the annual elevator-related fatalities occur in repair or maintenance workers who service elevators, or people who use elevators as part of their employment, such as in an office building. Of those, half of the fatalities result from falls into the shaft. In the occupational-related elevator deaths category, 53 percent occur during installation or repair, 17 percent occur during work in the shaft or car, and 30 percent occur during performance of work adjacent to (but not on board) the elevator. For passengers using elevators while not at work, such as in apartment buildings, almost half of the deaths were due to falls in the elevator shaft, and the other half occurred as a result of being caught between the elevator and the shaft wall. The underlying causes of the fatal incidents may be due to one of several defects or malfunctions, such as in the wiring, pulley systems, door operation, or improper maintenance procedures.http://www.consumerwatch.com/workplacepublic/elevators

Never ever ever ever again… omg.  I already hated elevators, but all these stories, NEVER AGAIN!  O.O

  • Anonymous

I’m from NY and I can vouch to the fact that 85% (if not more) of the elevators are the same one’s the building came with when they were first built; some over 60 years ago.  Even though a paper on the inside of the elevator claims they are checked “2 times a year”, I never saw an inspector, let alone one who went into the roof or the shaft to do their check ups.   I can only imagine this is something that will continue happening, so I’ll be sure to take the stairs from now on.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ANTOAKFEFLTRV32I625IQIFDR4 Jezzy

Um…Yeah I’ll be taking the stairs from now on….

I used to repair evil elevators for a living. If anyone is interested in it as a career choice, I can tell you that it definitely has its ups and downs.

YAY FOR LIVING IN THE BOONIES!

All you poor individuals gotta take elevators! hahahahah!

I may not have 4g cell service, buy I won’t be a victim in the Great Elevator Uprising Apocalypse of 2011-2012.

Attention:  We are approaching critical pun.  This is not a test.  Please remain indoors until authorities have gotten to the bottom of the elevator crisis.

  • Anonymous

I used to date a guy who repaired elevators in ny wonder if he worked on this one lol, see if she had read the demon last week she would have been hyper vigilant to evil elevators .,. Sorry

  • Anonymous

27 deaths per yr! How is it we here at the demon have only heard of a handful? I smell coverup and big payouts

  • Anonymous

Damn i was gonna say we had our “ups and downs” but someone beat me to it lol

  • Pyncky

Sorry guys, but I will take my chances with elevators.  No stairs for me. My CHF is not stair friendly. Hell, people get killed in cars everyday and no one starts walking or riding horses everywhere.

I will take the elevator, if I die…well I was going to some day anyway and it won’t hurt as long as a heart attack.

  • reapre

This story is actually really interesting.  If the door was open, I’m curious as hell to know how fast the elevator shot upward w/o throwing her off backward or just crushing her outright.  Where was she standing to get caught in the elevator door opening?

Maybe she was texting and walking/standing in the door opening?  I would think the elevator manufacturer would have elevators immobile as long as the doors are open, as a fail safe…I can’t think of many reasons to need the elevator to move while the doors are open?

  • Anonymous

That’s EXACTLY what I was about to say!  Maybe elevators are doing their part to combat obesity by scaring us all to walk up flights of stairs…

  • Anonymous

I am not a fan of horror movies, I get nightmares and it really seems as if I am having a heart attack the suspense gets to me so bad…SO please forgive my ignorance and let me know if that is a real pic or one from a movie? And what movie? And what happened? ;-) I love reading horror, just not watching!

Its a horrible overwhelming feeling that has been so bad it has caused me to vomit before.

  • Anonymous

All in all, I think I’d rather have 4G. We all have to go sometime and I rather do it streaming porn.

  • Anonymous

@annagg Sure, it’s a real pic. Elevator malfunctioned several times within several hours. No one noticed and just kept getting on. As soon as they stepped in, they slid on the blood, guts and body parts which helped them along to their own elevator death. All that red stuff you see?? That’s the blood of about 15 entangled, eviscerated, decapitated bodies. (or what’s left of them) They were in such horrifying conditions, the person who found them committed suicide immediately thereafter from the trauma. That elevator is still up and running to this day. It was considered a freak accident.

  • Anonymous

Nah, just pulling your leg. It’s from the movie ‘The Shining.’
Book is by Stephen King though it’s just not quite the same.

  • shannie

Depends on the make of the door locks the sensors and if the proper maintenance was being done…They are switches that make have not fired, and/or the door motor (depending on what kind was installed and model) totally failed and didn’t communicate with the system..Even though there are many building that have upgraded and modernized their elevators to using controllers with boards including the doors motors, some building owners save money by just getting on or some parts of their elevators modernized..so you have a mechanical door operator  working on an upgraded computerized controller..there’s many reasons this could have happened but the bottom line is it shouldn’t have..

  • Anonymous

Is it wrong I was cracking up reading that? I take it that it is from a movie then?

  • Anonymous

I was thinking we need a special registry for violent elevators. Think of the children!

  • reapre

    http://mhshining.webs.com/
It’s a partial picture from the movie “The Shining” with Jack Nicholson.  I wouldn’t call it a “scary” movie per se.  Maybe when it came out, but not now.  You should watch it, but you’re gonna need a couple hours for it, it’s well over 2 if I remember right.

  • Anonymous

I have read a couple dozen of his books, I enjoy them, but not the movies, for some reason…

  • Anonymous

Thank you! I may be able to watch an old horror movie…I remember my insomnia at 7 and getting up and watching the Twilight Zone and being to scared to get back in bed, and then the static on tv scaring the shit out of me after the channel went off air…then being afraid of the basement more than usual for a day or two… Now if I happen to catch one when they showing them again, they crack me up!

  • Sam

I have to walk past an elevator to get to the kitchen for a cuppa at work. I just practically did a James-Bond-hugging-the-wall-as-far-away-as-possible-from-the-Contraption-Of-Death on the way back with my brew.

  • JustBrowsingLife

NOT SCARY?????????? Where or what the name in Christ were you doing while it was on. I still see the lady rising from the tub. Redrum. Redrum. Damn spell checker even hated the word.

  • JustBrowsingLife

NOVA, on PBS, had a great show on the operation and failures of elevators. Kind of a warning NFC/W!

  • shannie

The company that had a maintenance/repair contract with the building is called Transel…the elevator just went under repairs recently I heard.
There are Unions for Elevators companies, Local 1, deals with all aspects of construction, installation, mod, repair and maintenance, (including escalators)
Local 3 is an Electrician union who is only allowed to maintain and repair the equipment..
Transel is Local 3…and I believe they just went from being a non union shop to a local three shop…
If I owned a building I would have nothing but Local 1 take care of all the elevators no matter what the cost.

  • Anonymous

The malfunction most likely had something to do with the recent service work. As an hvac guy who has tried his hand at fixing a few elevators, unlicensed and untrained mind you, I’ve found its easy to jump out door safety switches which are usually just a high voltage loop. Over the course of eighty years god only knows how many safety switches are eliminated rather than replaced.
27 deaths a year kinda blew my mind. How many are attributed to shark attack per annum?

  • shannie

Well, the thing is you can jump out a door switch on the older elevators and still move the car but only manually in the newer models that I’ve worked on..(The hand operator on the top of the cab or the manual controls in the motor room.) You have hand tools…yes that’s what they are called..lol that use codes and such to get into the motherboard to be able to move one or multiple cars at once..
it’s the older elevators that are the prob…You could be right..Lets say repairs were being done..someone jumped out a door switch on one floor to get access or maybe adjust the floor leveling…they wrapped up, one guy didn’t tell the other he did a quick jump at the door lock itself and the worst happens..I think the repairs had something to do with it too..
In Brooklyn last year at a hospital a lady lost her arm and leg in a similar accident..the repair man failed to secure the cab…he’s being charged with attempted murder…she’s still in rehab.  Horrible.
Like the elevator comp I worked for always said…Safety First..

  • Anonymous

Yea, I was assuming it was older one.
You are right on track, too, for the ones I worked on were from the early twenties. I couldn’t do much with one of them though. It just looked like a large baffling array of relays in the control room. I didn’t want to kill anyone trying to figure it out with no wiring diagram, either.

  • LeaveMeBe

The book is better than the movie, as usual. All his books are better than the movies, except for The Green Mile. That movie was as good as the book.

  • Anonymous

I agree! I bought the set of the Green Mile books at a yard sale a few years before the movie came out. I read them all in a row in about 2 days and then re-read them right way, taking 4 days. I have read them about 5-6 times. I have watched the movie a dozen times, as well. Love them.
