Man Accused Of Burning Toddler’s Genitals With Hot Frying Pan

Chicago, IL — Marcos Santos was charged with aggravated abuse of a child after police say he burned his 2-year-old son’s genitals with a hot frying pan after the kid requested a diaper change earlier this month.

According to police, the toddler toddled into the kitchen and informed Santos that he needed a diaper change. Santos apparently got angry when the child’s diaper fell apart, so he did what any sane parent would do in the same situation….he swept up all the stinky, soaking wet pieces of cotton and threw them in the trash. Just kidding – he grabbed a hot frying pan and placed it on the kid’s crotch, causing first- and second-degree burns to the boy’s penis, scrotum and thigh.

Police say Santos then attempted to treat the kid’s burns with toothpaste – it wasn’t until three days after the fact that medical assistance was sought.

Santos, 39, has been ordered held on $500,000 bond. Kiddo’s mom, 36-year-old Joanna Pawlina, is also charged with endangering the life and health of a child, a misdemeanor, because she was fully aware of the injuries and failed to seek medical attention.

The DCFS is investigating the allegations of abuse and neglect against the parents, spokesman Jimmie Whitelow said. The agency also investigated an unfounded allegation of neglect against the couple in August 2011. Whitelow said Pawlina still has custody of her children.

i can kinda-sorta understand his frustration. i firmly believe if a kid is able to tell you they shit themselves then they are old enough to use the toilet. i wouldn’t burn any kiddie genitals though

I disagree. My kids would tell me “bum, bum” from when they were tiny if they wanted me to sort them out (when they weren’t running away screaming from me armed with a pack of wetwipes and a Pampers, as kids do on the opposite end of the spectrum,) and at that stage they definitely didn’t have the co-ordination necessary to remove a dirty diaper and climb onto the loo. This guy is just lazy and stupid- I’m pretty sure that if he was the sort of parent to invest any time and effort into potty training his child, that he wouldn’t be on DD in the first place.

Santos was high as a kite and illiterate to boot. Can’t figure out how to put a diaper on his two year old (or was it taking it off that the problems started)? Can’t figure out what is burn ointment or first aid ointment? I wonder if he was using that same tube on his own mouth. Boys tend to be slower in potty training than girls. A 2 year old boy still in nappies doesn’t sound strange to me at all.
I lol’ed at the “running away screaming from me armed with a pack of wetwipes and a Pampers” though – that’s my little one to a tee. In fact, that’s how we know he’s ‘made a present in his nappy’ for us – he’s nowhere to be found!

For a nappy to disintegrate when taken off, the boy must have been in it for at least 12 hours, probably longer. No wonder he asked for a nappy change, that must have been so uncomfortable. Not to mention all that wee-soaked cloth against his skin for god knows how long, and all those bacteria then got burnt into his skin. Can we say infection?

I just got through an accident free day with my daughter yesterday and she most definitely is not “mentally challenged” unless being so stubborn you piss yourself to spite mommy counts. She’s also been able to take her own diaper off and sit on the potty since she was like 1 1/2 (she walked later than usual at 13 months so we didn’t even try until later than most I guess*). She used to take it off and yell “stinky!” But she’d just sit on the potty and make peeing noises with her mouth. I’m not making this sound good but the girl can recognize her own written name and sort of write it – the letters are in the wrong order. Shit. I hope she’s not dyslexic! Um, back on track – she can count, name letters, remember past days in detail and tell you about them. Just saying, she’s not stupid. She’ll be 3 in February and hopefully diapers will be gone. Now I just use them for nap time/bed time and a pull-up when we’re out just in case. She usually asks for the bathroom these past few days though.

*I’m on a feb 2009 birth board on babycenter.com and if it’s anything to go by 2 year olds in diapers are nothing strange.

Plenty of 2 year olds of perfectly fine intelligence, and with parents of perfectly fine intelligence, do wear diapers.

Also, while I agree that individuals are individuals, it’s a scientific fact that boys develop slower cerebrally than girls, so it’s common for boys to be slower at potty training among other things. Doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong them.

Indeed. As with anything, I researched the sweet bejesus out of developmental milestones, and the general consensus is that a child should be potty trained by the age of 3. So, there is absolutely nothing abnormal about a 2-year-old child still wearing diapers (the article said the diaper fell apart – maybe pull-ups which separate on both sides?).

Also–about potty-training…it’s not like it just comes naturally, anyway. There has to be a responsible adult helping the child learn this new skill. Like tying one’s own shoes. Or reading.

Not necessarily. Believe it or not, unless the neglect is severe (starvation/dehydration, a filthy house that poses sanitary issues – blatant issues like that), neglect can be very difficult to prove. especially when parents know they’re being investigated and act on their best behavior. And DCFS does have to prove allegations before taking kids away. Sometimes they have their hunches, but can’t do anything about it because there is no tangible evidence.

DCFS/CPS does drop the ball sometimes, but this isn’t necessarily one of them.

DCFS does not have the power to remove the kids from a home without a court order. Blame the judge. DCFS more than likely petitioned for removal.

That being said. I think there is some reason to take the children away at this point until the investigation is over. Once she decided to not seek medical attention, especially if it’s to protect the abuser, she is just as culpable as he is.

At THIS point, fuck yeah. But as I explained below, the DCFS doesn’t have the authority to do that. They need a court order that I’m sure they’ve petitioned for. If they didn’t (although that would be standard in a case like this), that would be dropping the ball.

I’m just trying to dispel the common belief that DCFS is this omnipresent, all-powerful agency. They have legislative and judicial red tape to contend with. Just like cops need evidence to make an arrest and a judge’s signature to get a search warrant, DCFS needs evidence and judges’ signatures to do their job, too… and it’s not always easy to acquire.

I have just never seen this,in my family;and there are lots of kids;seems to me that different training techniques would also factor into this;no two parents train their kids exactly the same way.

I was thinking, given the kind of daddy we have here, that the diaper was probably loaded, soaking wet to the point of disintegration and that’s why it fell off.

On a side note….some kids who are developmentally delayed potty train much latter than the typical kid. My son, who has Asperger’s, was five. His sister, who doesn’t, was right on schedule at about 2 1/2. : )

Hi Cedric, after I posted this, I saw the post from a fellow poster about how when she herself was abused, her abuser applied it to her bruises. But I still am not going to give the benefit of the doubt to someone who puts a hot frying pan on a little boy’s penis: he wasn’t trying to help the kid so much as he was trying to cover up what he had gone.

Just look anywhere. Sometimes I’m willing to provide links, sometimes not. I tend to feel that people can and should do their own research. You don’t necessarily need to read any scientific articles, either…just consult ANY book on child development.

Screw potty training, the man burned and tortured a toddler. What he needs is to have his dick deep fried. Sorry folks. I would gladly join a death squad to go after these sub humans. I would not need a gun just a deep frier.

It makes me sick she has her kids. She let that kid suffer with those burns. That is neglect! She should have been horrified when she saw what happened.   I would have been. There is no reason on God’s green Earth to burn a child’s genitals with a hot pan. None what-so-ever! What in the Hell is wrong with these people to feel this is appropriate punishment for anyone let alone an untrained 2 year old.   It’s not the kids fault either way. Potty training can be hard with a stubborn child but still some kids have accidents!

My daughter was fully potty trained at by 2 and a half. My oldest son didn’t fully potty train until after age 3 and even then had to wear goodnight diapers at night until age 5. According to his peditrician it was most likely because his bladder took longer to fully develop. Either way any time the pull up leaked or fell apart (and I’m talking a Huggies GoodNight Diaper) over night I never once thought to damage his genitials.  I didn’t punish him at all because he could not control his bladder when he was sleeping. It sucks but what can you do?

There are solutions to every problem. You don’t want to change diapers then potty train the child. You don’t want them falling apart buy better diapers or change them more often. If the child cannot control is potty then have some fucking compassion. Trust me I hated changing piss sheets and scrubbing a mattress as much as anybody but I couldn’t be mad at my son for peeing in his sleep.

   I just don’t get the stupidity of these parents.    I don’t get how anyone can justify that to themselves.  My heart breaks for this child because you know that burned for a very long time.   It must have been HELL for this kid.   How do you let a kid suffer like that to protect your so-called man.   I don’t understand how women can put their children so far below a piece of ass. I’m sorry burn my kid on purpose for any reason and your done….no way in Hell will my children not get medical attention because some man is afraid to go to jail.   He would be lucky if that is the worse thing that happened to him.
