Sloane Briles Man Charged After Throwing Son Off Cruise BoatSANTA ANA, Calif.— A man was arrested and charged with child endangerment after police say he threw his crying 7-year-old overboard while arguing with his girlfriend on a sight-seeing cruise.

Sloane Briles, 35, was on the 42-foot “Pavilion Queen” with his girlfriend and his two young sons from a previous marriage. They were with approximately 85 other people enjoying a 90-minute sight-seeing tour that goes past the homes of celebrities like Shirley Temple and John Wayne.

Witnesses say that Briles, who appeared to have been drinking, began arguing with his girlfriend and his 7-year-old son. Witnesses began to get angry with Briles as he started smacking the boy around while telling him he needed to toughen up.

When the boy would not stop crying, Briles informed him if he didn’t stop he would throw him overboard. If the passengers were upset with Briles before, I cannot imagine how they felt about him as he followed through with his threat and tossed the crying boy in the water 5-ft below.

Someone on the boat immediately tossed the kid a life ring and Briles jumped in to help his son, but another boater got to him first and pulled him out of the water.

“Eventually the father jumped in, but the boy was already rescued by that time. So he didn’t jump in immediately,” Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said.

Briles, a former sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, became combative when police tried to arrest him and deputies had to tackle him to the ground. This resulted in him being charged with resisting arrest on top of the child endangerment charge.

His girlfriend told reporters that Briles was just roughhousing with the boy, and that alcohol had simply impaired his judgement.

“His sons are his whole life,” his girlfriend said. “He would never ever do anything to hurt them on purpose. He knows now it could have gone badly. He doesn’t even care about the arrest or his own name. He knows it was stupid.”

The boy, along with his 5-year-old brother, were released to their mother.

    I read about this on a yahoo headline when I logged on today and I immediately thought, “I wonder when this idiot will show up on Dreamin’ Demon?”  To my delight, he was already here:)

    I don’t understand people who tell a small child to “toughen up.”  Being tough is not always an asset.  After all, being “tough” is what got this moron arrested.  The first thing anyone tells you around water is that you don’t throw or push anyone in.  It’s just not safe.  I’m glad his boys are back with their mother.

    I told my husband that the first vacation as a family that we take, I wanted to do it right & save up enough money & go on a cruise to Mexico, where I don’t have to clean, cook or wash ANYTHING but bathing suits in the bathroom sink with the kids.

    That kid could have been killed!  And why the fuck was Father of the Year drinking on a tour boat with his kids in his care?  He needs some jail time to sober up, counseling, and SUPERVISED visits (if any) with his children (assuming they want to spend any time at all with him after this).

    I’ve been on that boat (there’s only 1) twice, the last time in July. That tour takes you through Newport Bay & partially around Balboa Island. If he dropped him in the bay – it’s simple enough to save the boy. But if they were going out around The Wedge jetty…you’re in open water. We’re talking choppy water & frigging sea lions here! AND…only the front of the boat is open, the rest of it is closed off w/ windows.So does that mean he threw him off the front end (if I was a pirate I think that’s the bow) & could get “run” over?? 
    I’m glad people helped. When I was on a foreign grandma was letting her toddler grandsons run around & I was having a heart attack the entire time.

    I hope the mother of the boys is taking steps to see to it that this kind of thing can’t happen again, like maybe asking for his parental rights to be taken.  This guy does not need to be around kids.  If his kids were his whole life, he doesn’t think much of his own life now, does he?  He’s lucky he’s not facing murder charges.  Anything could have happened to that kid.  He could have hit his head, he could have drowned, he could have been run over by that boat or another boat before he was pulled from the water.  IDIOT!!

    I absolutely agree. I had my life threatened once for stepping in when a mother was slapping her child in the face. He was under two and strapped in a stroller. He reached out to touch something and instead of swatting his hand she slapped him right across the face. I jumped right in and stopped her. Called the police and kept the whore there yelling at me until they arrived. I think I would have thrown the girlfriend overboard with a brick in her bra.

    Just my opinion, but I think men should definitely have strong roles in raising boys. Boys should be masculinized and have some “toughness” imparted. I don’t advocate throwing them off random boats but I feel most women don’t understand what it takes to make a “man”. I’ve seen negative outcomes for boys that don’t have this conditioning.
