Albemarle, NC — According to the North Carolina State Patrol, 72-year-old William Loy Bowers accidentally ran over his wife and a 2-year-old child the couple had stopped to help.

William and his wife, 62-year-old Myrtle, were driving along Stony Gap Road Tuesday afternoon when they spotted the lone toddler walking in the road. William pulled into a nearby driveway and Myrtle got out of the truck to help the girl.

As Myrtle was walking back to the truck with the child, she apparently stopped at the rear of the vehicle to ask a neighbor if she knew who the kid belonged to. William, thinking his wife had crossed the street, began backing out of the driveway.

A nearby witness saw what was about to happen and yelled for William to stop, but because he had the windows rolled up and the AC on, William heard nothing. He continued to back out, pinning his wife and the child underneath the truck.

Troopers said William, who thought he had driven over something in the median, then pulled forward and backed over the two a second time.

The toddler, identified as Neveah Andrea Tyson, died at the scene. Myrtle was airlifted to Charlotte Medical Center, where she is listed in stable condition.

Troopers said Neveah had just been laid down for a nap at her parent’s home, which was nearby, when she got up and wandered out of the house to follow her two older brothers who had gone fishing. She apparently became disoriented and was trying to make her way back home at the time of the accident.

At first reading this I was speachless and felt really bad inside reading this..(I’m human)

Then I remembered what Pikeman said about me being more insensitive a poster..I don’t want to let him down so here.

This is why you don’t play tag with a hint of hide-and-seek with old geezers.

We should just turn them into puppy chow when they hit 65

  • Prominent Prozac

Why so they can kill puppies too?

Such a tragedy. Can’t even begin to imagine the guilt the poor old man is feeling. This could just as easily happened to a younger person. You know the ones, driving around with loud music blaring that can’t even hear sirens behind or around them. Just another sad reminder as to why it’s important for parents to know where their toddlers are – even if you *think* they are napping check in on them and make sure of it, and why people should make use of that rear view mirror to be sure nothing and no one is behind them when backing out and do nothing that will impair their hearing.

Fuck Blue Buffalo! That’s what they use to make their food? No wonder they say they don’t add by products or “corn” & those other “fillers”! The geezers eat the corn & then they get grinded into that food!??

Umm, thanks but no thanks. My dog will enjoy her tasty corn/horse eyes & chicken feet thankyouverymuch.

I have 2 things in my house that prevent this from happening:

    1. locks on doors & gates.

    2. an alarm system that tells me when & what door opened.

I have some other nasty comments about age, driving & the name Myrtle but I will reserve them for myself.

Our stupid society should not be allowed to drive anymore. I would say just old people, but can you imagine how many children would be run down in the geriatric rush to oppose it at the polls.

  • Anonymous

Oh jeeze! That’s tragic in every sense. And wtf?! As soon as I noticed my kids were able to TOUCH the door knob it was time to put a lock latch high on the door! Hell, I even went as far as to buy the cheapie house alarm, its 2 peices held together by a magnet, and one goes on the door, the other on the door frame connecting to the other piece, whenever the door was opened, it would set off the alarm that was extremely high pitch, and screechy and beeping. I don’t take chances!

Ground-up geriatrics are not the main source of protein in Blue Buffalo dog food.  You’ll find them in Ol’ Roy.

Just what is wrong with the world, when doing a good deed you get almost killed by your loved one and end up killing the little kid you were helping?? is it a curse?

I feel so bad for the witness. I can’t imagine seeing something like this happening and not being able to do anything about it. That’s horrifying, and they will have nightmares about this forever. Absolutely horrible.

People keep using the “T” word.  Now the fucking Bee-gees are in my head…

  • Anonymous

Good deeds go unpunished everyday. Sometimes just helping someone is its own reward. I think people complain too much when they don’t get the recognition they expected.

This is a tragedy and has nothing to do with punishment.

  • Anonymous

    Which word would you use?

The senior couple and the family of the dead child must be suffering unimaginable grief and angst.

I don’t know how any of them can stop crying after this event.

  • Anonymous

Traumatic is better and still brought to you by the letter “T”.

  • Hekate

dammit Satan… as soon as i read your post the BeeGees popped into my head… talk about going viral…

    They’re also good in soup.

Is there nothing they can’t do?

  • wyrosjr

I think sometimes that shit is just gonna happen. This old couple meant well for sure. I can’t find fault with his actions here. We can’t stop driving. I suppose we just forget that we live in disposable bodies and are all gonna die. Accidents happen.

Pray for the family and old man in this time of anguish and suffering for them.

    This just sucks!

I think I still have their Spirits Having Flown album on vinyl!  For you youngsters (haha) the T song is first on it.  Oh…coincidence:  the toddler’s name is Neveah…backwards for heaven!  Work with me here…her spirit has flown…to heaven!  (While I work on mine freefalling to Hell.)

It really bugs me when someone does something nice, like donating to a charity or helping an old lady with her groceries, then proceeds to tell everyone they come into contact with the good deed they did so they’ll get an onslaught of verbal high fives and pats on the back. If people only do something nice so other people will inflate their ego then they’re either very self centered or very insecure.

In case it’s not obvious, I don’t like braggers, lol.

  • Anonymous

Neither do I, but I am grateful they are giving something back.

The people I admire most are people who donate to important altruistic organizations and are listed in the brochures under contributors as Anonymous.

  • Anonymous

That is exactly what I was thinking before I read your post.  I have often thought about this, and while the braggarts are a pain in the ass- well at least they are doing something.  So even if its for recognition, self fulfillment, or true altruism- does it make a difference?  (Some studies have shown that there is no such thing as true altruism- people do good deeds for the psychological effect it has on them) Either way, I would rather hear some “altruistic bragging” (lol) than hear about someone’s fancy new car, house, or kids.

  • Prominent Prozac

    I sat on this for a while..But I think I like “Tenacious”.

  • wyrosjr

I have some of those from ebay for 2$ apiece. They work really well.

  • AliceinChainsman =]

use those on class to wake up students?

  • wyrosjr

nah, I use a paddle if things get to be a problem.

  • Its obvious he couldn’t see them so why move the car? Basic common sense could have prevented this.
