Man Kills Self After Shooting Molestation Victim and Her MotherCrescent City, CA –  A Los Gatos man shot himself after shooting a girl he was accused of molesting and her mother in the head.

A police officer investigating a vacant rental car parked near in a beach parking lot heard a gunshot moments after his arrival. At a nearby picnic bench, the officer found (what was left of) 60 year-old Jerry Wayne Steele. Steele had shot himself in the head and died as a result.

Just hours prior to this, Steele had allegedly showed up at the trailer home Ashley Volore shared with her 14 year-old daughter, and shot both of them in the head. He then fled the residence he had driven some 400 miles to get to, a trailer the pair had moved to in hopes of never having to see Steele again.

On Monday, prosecutors and Steele’s attorney had reached a settlement related to 7 felony counts against him involving molestation of the girl over a 4 year period. The abuse came to light only after Steele held a razor to the girl’s throat, which scared her enough to call her father and spill the beans. Steele was looking at decades behind bars, which is all the more time when you’re 60 years-old. Steele had been a friend of the family. The alleged abuse started after a Christmas parade in San Jose, when Steele molested the girl while driving her home. Another incident described by the girl involved a trip to Disneyland, during which Steele took pictures of the girl with his cellphone, instructing her to expose different body parts. Police found these images when they arrested Steele.Free on $250,000 bail, Steele took off with a .25 caliber handgun and tracked the two down. Police were called after he fled and the best lead they had was a car rental employee who recalled renting to Steele.

The mother is expected to survive, though still in critical condition. The girl, unfortunately, is brain dead and is not expected to live.

What a horrible end to what sounds like a horrible life for that young girl. I would say I’m glad he killed himself, but I’m not, I would rather him end up in prison for the rest of his pathetic life, taking it up the bum and throat every night. My thoughts are on this girl’s family and hoping her mother recovers from the flesh wounds, and eventually, from the emotional wounds as well.

Fucking piece of shit should’ve just killed his own damned self.  What a G-d fucking piece of shit bastard.  I can’t imagine what the families of those two women must be feeling now, and mom’s still alive…that poor, poor woman. :(

Totally off topic, but my dog came from a Los Gatos kill shelter.

Just glad to hear your dog didn’t come from the clothes line!

Talk about being a pussy. You man enough to intimidate a child but you’re not man enough to own up to your actions and face the consequences? That is a fucking pussy. For every action, there’s a result, good or bad and you have to learn how to deal with that shit. If you don’t want to get in trouble DON’T BE FUCKING UP.

I’m sorry but i am so angry seeing this. He should have just killed himself and leave the other two alone

If I was the mother, I wouldn’t want to live through my injury just to find that my daughter was gone. I can’t begin to imagine the pain this family is going through.

What is with people who feel the need to kill people before doing themselves in? Even revenge wouldn’t explain this mess, but then again he sounds like he was a pretty selfish fuck.

Another reason why pedophiles should NOT be turned loose on the streets. I blame our justice system. If they would stop letting these creatures out on bail, stop letting them have light sentences etc, this type of thing wouldn’t happen.

I feel so bad for the girl and her family, especially her mother. She tried to do what was right and protect her child unlike so many other mothers we hear about. I just hope she knows that none of this is/was her fault. It sounds like she did all the right things, reporting the abuse and moving to try to hide her child from him.

who the heck lets their daughter ride alone with this guy?

  • pikeman and company

Facebook is lame. They get mad if you fart sideways on there. If this fuck does have a facebook, then you have to learn to bitch this fuck out politely.

“Yes, Jerry, you are a real jerk. That is horrible what you did to that woman and her daughter.” When what you really want to say is:

“Fuck you you vile piece of steaming maggot ridden shit! I hope Bubba pops your eyes out and skull fucks you every night! May you fucking rot in in the vilest depths of fucking Hell and get ass raped by Satan and his minions!”

  • pikeman and company

People like him should get sent to the Los Gatos kill shelter and put down like the fucking sick dogs they are! Save the real dogs, euthanize some scumbags like this fuck!

Too bad he did himself in. I’m sure there are plenty more scumbag fucks like this one that we can euthanize.

I hate kill shelters. The dogs didn’t do anything wrong. It’s humans like this that deserve a gassin’.

  • Caprica

I agree that our justice system is to blame. Child molesters should not be released…..ever! And I mean the sick fucks that mess with children, not the people who are labeled pedophiles because they’re 18 and have sex with their 16 year old girlfriend. Child molesters change children forever and I personally believe that child molesters cannot be rehabilitated. This is such a tragic story and my prayers go out to the family.

How does a man with such infected brains get to live to be 60 years old?  Pack for warm weather, Jerry, you twisted fucking fairy, Satan has a new soul to torture.

  • wyrosjr

Yeah, most of the people I know on facebook wouldn’t want to hear this stuff either. What is wrong with us when we would rather just put our heads in the sand and pretend this doesn’t exist?

  • hookerpie

He drove 400 miles. How did he know where they lived? Being a mother I would not want to live after losing an only child. Losing one of  my children is and has been one of my biggest fears since I became a mother. I feel so sorry for this mother. Had been me this man would not have lived after discovering what he did to my child. I would have killed him myself. I’m glad he is dead.

love how we have to let everybody out on bail.  hmmmm. he had already held a razor to her throat, but the judge thought bail would be fine for this piece of shit.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7R7S6UQXTLCFLIV4CRD7NS75TY Bryan

Considering all else that happened, I doubt that much planning went into it. Heck, he drove 400 miles to shoot the mom and girl, probably going the whole way in a state of total irrationality and single-minded focus, not giving any thought whatsoever to aftermath or consequences. At a guess, it was only after he had seen what he’d done did he decide on the only course of action left to him.

I’m not apologizing for him or justifying his actions. Given your own comment, you understand that his behavior was not unique amongst those who’d committed similar offenses. Not that it was predictable, but at least understandable at some level. If anything, though, I wish there wasn’t a large enough sample of this type of behavior to begin to understand it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7R7S6UQXTLCFLIV4CRD7NS75TY Bryan

At a guess, he was looking at a choice between seven felony counts relating to child molestation or not facing them, if he could eliminate the witnesses. I’m not suggesting this was  a rational choice on his part, but he wouldn’t have been the first person in his position to take that action.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7R7S6UQXTLCFLIV4CRD7NS75TY Bryan

While I agree with your first sentence, I find it kind of painful in this instance to bring up that our justice system is based on the concept of innocence until guilt is proven, wherein the trial would provide any proof of guilt.

Los Gatos is a wealthy community in Northern California. The suspect’s bail ought to have been measured against his means, not just against the crimes with which he was charged. Bail ought to be measured like punitive damages in a civil trial. Punitive damages are scaled against the wealth of the defendant with consideration of the severity of the charge. Were bail set like that, then wealthier defendants would be just as crippled by bail as less-well-off people on the wrong side of the law.

When I read the story, I was thinking that someone like him should have had a GPS transponder strapped to his ankle, but then, that would have been in violation of his presumed innocence as well.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7R7S6UQXTLCFLIV4CRD7NS75TY Bryan

I think what bothers me most about this story is, how did he find out where they were? According to the Mercury News story that’s linked above, there was an order of protection that was meant to keep him 300 yards from the girl. The mother & daughter moved to a trailer park 400 miles from their home in San Jose to get away from him. I’d think they’d've been careful about that. Granted, they didn’t have the resources of the federal witness protection program, but you’d think that the Santa Clara County prosecutor’s office would have done what they could to protect the family.

I don’t think this story’s over. I think the Santa Clara County prosecutor might have to answer for this, if that office was involved in relocating the mother and daughter. I think, too, that since Steele took away everything from Ms. Volore, it’s only right that all of his worldly goods are liquidated and his entire estate turned over to her — not that it’s in any way compensation for losing her daughter, but that no one besides her should benefit from his death.

good point.  Makes you wonder.  I know that for this to go on, he must have justified it by pretending it was consentual, or something…  What a dick…

  • Wicked Smilee

Maybe we should err on the side of caution when considering “innocent before guilty” in this type of case.  Definately should consider higher bail,….

  • Wicked Smilee

only the good die young, thats how.

I had to come back to this story before I went to do my woman duties. It really pisses me off that the systems lets fucks like this walk only for them to do it again and most times again. I’m curious as to where this girls father was, and why he didnt come kill this bastard himself. I really despise fuckers who harm children –and old people and animals– Stories like this really fuck me up. I kinda hope for the sake of the mother that her daughter sticks around long enough for her to say goodbye.  But, then again, being a mother is that what I would really want.

  • Anonymous

I’m thinking when they issued the protection order it probably listed the girl and her mothers new address. I had a friend who had to get one against an abusive ex, she too, moved to hide from him but they told him where she lived. When the authorities were asked why they had to tell where she currently lived, they said it was so he would know where not to go.

Way to protect people who need it huh?

  • Anonymous

Yeah, but now we won’t have the pleasure of hearing about him being murdered via violent broomstick rape.  Shit, I would have been pleased with a suitably violent shanking.  I wish we could dig him up and abuse the corpse for awhile.  If I believed in the afterlife, I’d hope he felt every strike of my golf clubs on his junk.

My reaction to this story would best be illustrated by a helium balloon introduced into a deep freezer.  I was in such a good mood until this made it shrivel up and sink. Once I read “brain dead,” I felt that balloon fizzle into the pit of my stomach.

I think he bail should have been measured against the fact that he threatened a child with a fucking razor.

This makes me want to scream until my throat runs bloody.  I am just speechless, which considering my capacity for bullshit, may be a sign of the apocalypse.  Right after the locusts, I think.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_7R7S6UQXTLCFLIV4CRD7NS75TY Bryan

Again, there’s that presumed innocent until proven guilty thing. In this case, I suspect I like it just as much as you do. However, if we start taking rights away, where does it stop? What happens when the accused really is innocent, but is subject to the worst pre-trial punishments the justice system and its processes can dish out? What then? Monetary apologies? Lawsuits? Sweep it under the rug? Sure, that’ll work until it’s you or a loved one caught in the trap, and then who will you scream about it to? Sorry, no. It’s our system and we have to work with it, not dismantle it a piece at a time because it’s inconvenient.

The solution is bound to be an expensive one; but usually things like this are paid for with the well-being of individuals rather than by taxpayers. I could see a mandate stating that anyone suspected of sex crimes is detained without bail and in protective custody — because, again, if the suspect is innocent, would you really want them subjected to the general population of a jail? I wouldn’t want that on my conscience. That’s just one suggestion; any solution would have to pass over the hurdles of civil liberties and constitutional law. And I’d rather a clean solution that fits within the structure we have than dismantling the structure because irrational opinion overrules reason.

I think the mom has already said her farewells. The SJM-N article states the child is brain dead and awaiting the harvesting of her organs for transplant. That “status” doesn’t come into play until a parent or guardian OK’s it in the case of a minor child’s death. I know it sounds awfully harsh in the telling; but I’d rather have blunt language and clarity than soft, polite language and confusion.

I commend the mother’s love for her daughter and compassion for society in allowing her daughter’s organs to be donated. Half a dozen people, or more, will live longer, see better and be able to function as active human beings because of her generosity.

I understand what you’re saying, but I don’t think that a higher bond in this case would be a denial of his rights.  I also didn’t call for the dismantling of the court system, so I’m not sure where that’s coming from.  I feel that the potential for violence and danger to the alleged victim should have been more of a concern when determining bail.

Presumption of innocence doesn’t trump everything.  If that were the case, we wouldn’t have bail or a pre-trial system of any kind. The judge has to weigh that presumption of innocence against the possibility of harm to the victim before trial.  I think that the victim’s claim of being threatened with a razor, while not tangible enough to convict this man, is certainly enough for a judge to consider him a real threat and therefore subject to a higher amount of bail.Clearly, though, no matter how high the bond was in this case, if he was able to bond out, he was going to kill that little girl. Only a denial of bond or one so high it kept him in would have saved that poor little girl and her mother.

  • Pyncky

I would think that he wasn’t in the habit of thinking too far ahead anyway.

  • http://profiles.google.com/coldlogic HAL 9000

That is really depressing story right there. Fact that the dude would go and track them down before killing himself, I mean, what a loser of losers.

Its all the sadder because Crescent City and the Lost Coast are beautiful, therapeutic places to be. An ideal place for a fresh start with a clean slate for a teen who’d had so much pain and confusion I’m sure. The wild surf of that coast, ancient trees tall as small skyscrapers, bohemian live-and-let-live attitude of the locals mixed with a touch of the wild west, just a great place. An ideal place for that kid to get it back together, reflect on all she’d been through and still see redeeming, hopeful things all around her worth living for.

    And then shithead shows up…

  • Shauna Olsen

There are no words to sum up this poor kids life. Worse yet if the mother does live it is going to be more hell for her to have lost her daughter to the same SOB that should have been in jail instead of free. Fucking sad!

  • MM222

This sickens me to no end…. had he not already done ENOUGH to that poor child… what gave him the motivation to go thru all this trouble to kill her, may he rot in hell… as I truly believe there are special places in hell for these monsters….

The victim stated he molested her by force multiple times from the time she was 10 until her death and that he threatened her with a box cutter to the neck.  Besides her accusations, the police found pornographic pictures on his phone that he had taken of her over the years.  The fact that they found the pictures, which backed her accusations, should have been enough to take the death threat more seriously and deny his bail.  Not to mention, the judge in this case did not even follow the Santa Clara County bail schedule for each count, which would have at least had his bail set around $500,000.  Had his bail been set correctly, maybe he wouldn’t have been able to post it.
