San Diego, CA – A man in California has been charged with possessing child porn after he was a bit too truthful while applying for a job as a San Diego police officer, and admitted to enjoying child porn.
Robert Williams, 38, was applying for a job with the police department. Part of this process includes a questionnaire in which applicants are asked about past criminal activity. Question No. 172 asked applicants if they’ve ever had sexual contact with a child. Williams answered yes, explaining when he was 29 he had “tried to touch” a younger cousin as she slept.
Question No. 175 asked applicants if they’ve ever viewed, purchased, sold or subscribed to child pornography. Being the honest person that he is, Williams once again answered yes, admitting he had been viewing child porn for the last three years after an argument with his wife. I’m calling bullshit on that reason. I can see a woman driving a man to drugs, alcohol, therapists or murder, but I can’t see them driving a man to jacking off over pics of naked 6-year-olds.
As you can imagine, the police were a bit alarmed by his responses and suspecting Williams may be involved in some illegal activity, so on May 11 police executed a search warrant on Williams’ storage unit and his wife’s apartment. They would end up confiscating several hard drives, homemade DVDs and tapes, cameras, photocopied magazine pages, a computer and a netbook. Williams was arrested the same day, charged with suspicion of possessing child porn.
According to a search warrant affidavit filed by San Diego police Officer Susan Righthouse, Williams once lived with a woman who kicked him out after she found child porn on her computer. Rory Shipp said one day she turned on her computer and found a video of a little girl in blue coming out of her clothes. “(The girl) was playing with a little thing in her mouth. Oh my God, tears came out of my eyes. It was a home video,” she said.
Shipp says she confronted Williams who explained to her that there was nothing wrong with downloading or looking at child porn, that it was ok. “I said, ‘Are you sick?’” said Shipp. She kicked him out that same day, although I didn’t read anywhere that says she called the cops on him.
His wife contacted a news station and read the following statement: ”The San Diego Police Department has problems with the integrity of their officers because telling the truth during the hiring process brings prosecution upon those seeking employment. Mr. Williams told the truth, revealing his secrets, his thoughts, and his past. But he remains innocent of all charges they have illegally obtained. He is seeking expert counsel, pro bono.”
