TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. – A 48-year-old woman was mauled to death by four pit bulls while she took a walk on Sunday.
Witnesses say that Margaret Salcedo tried using her cell phone as the dogs began attacking her, but one of the pits grabbed her arm and she dropped it. For the next three minutes, the four dogs bit her all over her body. A man in a car tried to help Salcedo, but remained in his vehicle when the dogs attacked him as well.
When police arrived, they had to shoot and kill one of the dogs when it charged at him, but the other three ran off. They were later rounded up and taken to the animal shelter. Salcedo was conscious at the scene, but her injuries were too severe and she would later die at the hospital.
The four dogs belonged to John and Maria Hardiman, and reportedly escaped from the home’s fenced-in backyard. The DA will decide if charges will be filed against the dog’s owners.
“I think it’s like living in the Middle Ages where you hate to go outside because the wolves are going to eat your grandchildren,” said resident Elizabeth Stout, owner of my favorite quote of the day.
