Woman Taking Walk Mauled To Death By Four Pit BullsTRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, N.M. – A 48-year-old woman was mauled to death by four pit bulls while she took a walk on Sunday.

Witnesses say that Margaret Salcedo tried using her cell phone as the dogs began attacking her, but one of the pits grabbed her arm and she dropped it. For the next three minutes, the four dogs bit her all over her body. A man in a car tried to help Salcedo, but remained in his vehicle when the dogs attacked him as well.

When police arrived, they had to shoot and kill one of the dogs when it charged at him, but the other three ran off. They were later rounded up and taken to the animal shelter. Salcedo was conscious at the scene, but her injuries were too severe and she would later die at the hospital.

The four dogs belonged to John and Maria Hardiman, and reportedly escaped from the home’s fenced-in backyard. The DA will decide if charges will be filed against the dog’s owners.

“I think it’s like living in the Middle Ages where you hate to go outside because the wolves are going to eat your grandchildren,” said resident Elizabeth Stout, owner of my favorite quote of the day.

People need to keep their vicious dogs under control! What the fuck are people doing with four vicious pitbulls anyway. Most people like that are trailer trash tweakers that get those types of dogs and make them mean. I think the owner should suffer the consequences, and that is the truth! I’d be real leery living in a town called Truth or Consequences anyway.

Pit Bulls(hit) are the highest quality of any dog breed. Only the finest people of high caliber and social standing and education adopt these dogs.

The owners of these Pit Bulls(hit)s must be spinning wonder what provoked the attack. I am sure the owners, possibly fresh out of prison, were short on the money to fix the fence or simply hadn’t yet enough time.

Man, this is just a nightmare. I would have to say this would be one of the worst ways to die. The terror this lady felt, AND the sheer pain. Ohho. I watched this news cast last night with the fam, and we gasped when that lady described everything that happen to that poor woman. Those owners need to be held accountable. Responsibility people–take it!

It’s not the dogs’ faults their owners are fucking idiotic shitbags. What the hell are you doing with FOUR pit bulls? Only rescues should have that many dogs of any breed, let alone pit bulls.

If that was intended for me: No, that was a joke. I thought flying pigs went well with rainbows and birdsong.

Then again, I am not certain that was meant for me at all. You might have to address it more clearly, if it wasn’t…….

I agree, dogs of any breed are not born vicious, they are made that way by the conditions of how they are raised. I have had a few pits and all were gentle and loving. I think the owners need to be brought up on charges though I am not sure what those would be. As for the dogs, it is sad they need to be killed, but it is necessary now.

I agree, dogs of any breed are not born vicious, they are made that way by the conditions of how they are raised. I have had a few pits and all were gentle and loving. I have a Pit myself and My family has raised them since before I was born. Pits are just another dog, and their behavior is dictated by their environment. In this respect any dog has a propensity for violence. I myself was mauled by my baby sitter’s Shih Tzu when I was 4 years old and have carried the scar all my life. Does this mean that all Shih Tzu owners are cons and uneducated scum too?

I have no doubt that the people who raised these dogs are losers. And they should be tried for manslaughter because of the behavior of these dogs.

A dog is a dog. Assholes gravitate towards Pitbulls, Dobermans and Rotweiller breeds because they “look” mean and extend the asshole tendencies of the individual beyond their own bodies. Its no suprise that because of this, the dogs often find themselves in trouble.

I have had several dogs throughout my lifetime (I am partial to Boxer breed), and do find the Pit to be particularly stubborn, but just as trainable as any other dog I have ever had. If there is blame to be placed in these cases, it should ALWAYS be to the owners of the dog.

Once a dog has attacked a human, humans are on their prey list. It’s sad, but true. My own dog, a cocker spaniel, attacked me when I was in 5th grade. We still have no idea what set him off. I had to get plastic surgery to fix the damage so I didn’t spend my school days looking like a freak show. I thank God the ER docs refused to fix me and recommended plastic surgery. School was tough enough without massive scars. We put that dog down. We weren’t about to give him to another family and have him bite another kid.

Since that dog, I’ve owned a German Shepherd/Rottweiler/Collie mix and a Norwegian Elkhound/Wolf mix. People who didn’t know our dogs were terrified of them, but they were the sweetest, most gentle, loving dogs ever. They never bit anyone. (Except the wolf mix, after she was abused and abandoned in the worst snow storm in 100 years. She was scared and bit the police officer that finally caught her after a week on the lam. Thankfully, no one held that against her.)

Also, since then, I’ve volunteered at our humane society for about 16 years. The shelter director says she trusts pits 100 times more than she trusts cocker spaniels. She says a pit bull will give you warning signs that it is going to attack you. A cocker spaniel just decides one day it’s had enough and bites the hell out of your face. I’ve never met a pit bull I was scared of, but all cocker spaniels make me nervous. Not just because that’s the kind of dog that bit me, but because of all the ones I’ve seen at the shelter that had to be put down after biting someone. I refuse to work with cocker spaniels there.

About 10 years ago a family member had their two rotweilers chained up in the garage while they were cleaning the garage out. Well, the next door neighbor, who didn’t get along with my family member, decided to be snoopy and go into the garage. One of the dogs started growling at her and when the lady went closer to the dogs she did the stupid thing of trying to pet them. The female rotweiler attacked her and when the lady started hitting it and the female yelped, the male jumped in. My family member ran out in the garage when he heard the commotion and pulled the dogs off her and proceeded to scream obscenities at her for coming into the garage. The lady wasn’t hurt TOO bad. She ended up suing my family member for like $15k and the dogs were put down by court/police order. I don’t think that’s fair, as that lady was trespassing and the dogs were protecting the property. Its not like the rotweilers were out looking for trouble.

I am sure your family is an exception, but given the choice of leaving a child with a Pit Bull, a Rottweiler, or a Labrador retriever, I’ll take the Lab without blinking an eye. The attacks by Pits and Rotties seem particularly cruel and to the death of whatever is attacked.

If a Lab bites, it doesn’t go for the jugular.

Okay, even if the owner is the cause of a mean Pit, when do you question the owner’s training abilities and specialties? After the mauling? Not all Pits are owned by people of dubious character, it seems to be the dog of choice of people on the lower rungs of society.

I know good responsible people own Pits, but how do you tell? Whether or not the dog locks its jaws on your child’s arm?

I was attacked by a Dalmatian of all freaking things when I was three. It just about tore my ear off. Thankfully, I’m not afraid of them now, nor was I as I grew up, but it definitely made me understand that any dog–ANY breed- can suddenly tear your face off without provocation. Helped me a lot in my many years as a veterinary technician. And FYI: I was never once attacked by a Pit…but a Jack Russell about ripped my finger off!

Definitely agree 100%. This dalmatian that attacked me was my neighbor’s, and was a dog my family knew (or thought they did). My mom had me out in the yard, walked into the back door to grab something, and he ran into our yard, knocked me down, and started pulling and thrashing on my ear. Fortunately a couple of old broads saw him lunge and stopped their car, jumped out, and beat him with umbrellas until he let go. Scary moment.

Pretty sure it’s easy to tell if someone is a responsible pet owner versus not being one.

A telltale sign is number of animals. I love pitbulls, but there is no way I’d ever have four of them at once. i wouldn’t have that many dogs of any breed at once. What if they all get out at the same time? Like this story? Other reports are saying the owners weren’t home at the time and the dogs got out of the yard. They were left in the yard while the owners were at work? That’s pretty irresponsible. Anything could have happened, and this did.

The thing to remember here, is the news LIKES focusing more on Pit attacks. They know it’s going to sell more papers and get more viewers. A lot of people assume the worst about the breed without ever having owned a Pit, then there is that “mean look” to them. The news knows this and so these are the stories about dog attacks they favor most.

I agree that four dogs is not responsible, but its still hard to tell. I also agree that if a dog owner of any breed gives his dog(s) run of the yard that the fence be such that there is absolutely no way out of the fence unless the owner opens the gate.

I think these owners need to not have dogs and to spend time in jail. How much time I don’t know.

  • Anonymous

    Yeah, yeah.

  • Athena

Do you feel safer around white people than you do black people? Pits aren’t inherently more aggressive, based on statistics. But, just like black folk are more likely to be raised in the hood, Pits are more likely to be raised by assholes. Just sayin’. :P

Seriously, though. I’m comfortable around any dog with competent owners. But if a strange dog is wandering around unsupervised, I’m more likely to duck back in the house when its a Pit. I’ve got a big ol’ scary dog – a 120lb Rott/German Shepherd mix. One day, when we lived in the hood, I was just starting out on a walk with her when a beefier-than-usual Pit came wandering into the parking lot… dragging its large-gauge chain behind him. My dog and I were back in that house quicker than either of us could blink.

  • LeaveMeBe

I totally agree with you. The higher the number of dogs (regardless of breed) the more the pack mentality goes up and the greater the danger. Four chihuahuas could act the same way, they just don’t have the size and strength to do what larger breeds do.

It sounds like your aunt, uncle, and grandma are good and responsible people who train their animals well… you also with the Rottweiler you also raised.

The problems with Pit Bulls always seems to be that they got out of their yards. After that, how do we know the dogs are safe? Better to err on the side of caution and ? Run? Move quietly and slowly to shelter? Roll up like a turtle? I don’t know. I mean if I were going into a jungle or a forest or someplace out of my element where there are animals which sometimes attacks humans, I would ask what to do. What do we do when we see Pit Bulls by themselves?

I have also noticed that Labs become timid when they are abused and not hot tempered. A few years ago some breeders on the west coast started breeding the dogs in an “incestuous” way and the dogs became high strung and uneasy… I think most of those dogs were put down.

Hope you are love’n your Lab! (except for the shedding)

Actually, this list tells of the most fatal attacks by which dogs. It doesn’s list attacks too though which can make the percentage higher. Pit Bulls dont have lock jaws. Also they are terriers which terriers are more vicious when attacking. Pit Bulls hold and shake with their strong as hell jaws and don’t let go, causing serious tissue damage and loss of blood which leads to death, compared to lets say a poodle that would bite and run away. This is why they get a bad rap esp. in the news because when a pitt attacks, it’s catastrophic, it’s not just a bite. I love all pets, but dogs like pit bulls shouldn’t be owned unless the owners seriously raise them correctly with exreme social contact. Personally, I don’t wish anyone to have Pits unless you go through a certificate course on how to raise them. Then if something happens, your ass is grass. These dogs are suppose to be smart, but they get stupid when not noticing a real threat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_dog_attacks_in_the_United_States

While it isn’t entirely true that you can’t make a pit bull let go unless you KILL it, it certainly does take a lot of effort. I was bitten by a stray pit bull back in December, and I thought I would be leaving without a hand. That fucker had come into my yard (over a fucking fence), and attacked my dogs, so I jumped in.

That is never a good idea. If you think for even one second that a dog like that is going to bite you, REMOVE YOURSELF FROM THE SITUATION. My hand was in that dog’s mouth for so long, and it was clamped down pretty good. I was able to get the dog to let go, but not before it had already halfway digested my fucking hand.

I’m glad I got the beast to stop attacking my dogs, but I couldn’t type or masturbate for like, months. If a dog like that is attacking your child or dogs, I hope you have a gun. I didn’t, and I almost lost my hand.

Here we go. Lets all blame the dog. Never mind the owners who raised and molded the dog into what it was. These animals are not born mean and evil. Its taught into them. Any dog regardless of its breed can turn evil in a second. Its just not Pit Bulls. While I feel very bad for whats happened, I think the woman who witnessed this could have done more to help the victim. Pick up a big stick or some rocks. Im sure the woman being attacked wouldnt have been bothered if she got hit with a few rocks to save her life. The homeowners should be charged with murder. Seeing how they raised evil dogs. I hope they dont have kids. Just imagine what they are like.

Here’s a weird thing – in Nebraska, labs are the most bitey dogs! http://www.kmtv.com/story/14280830/2010-stats-released-labs-top-of-omaha-list-for-biting?redirected=true

My sisters have pits, I’ve always had (until 3 years ago when I ended up with a basset hound) rotts, and I’m terrified of dalmations and shar-peis; HOWEVER! the dogs should not have been allowed to get out – pack mentality, as mentioned above, can be a scary thing – I’ve known a lot of nice supposedly scary dogs, but in every case, the owners weren’t total jackasses. And for the record, I would never leave any child alone with a dog. Or a ferret (lol).

    Lab = very soft bite.

    Chihuahua = nipping at heels

Pit Bull = big bite with locking jawls

    YOU JUST DID!!!! ;)

Pits don’t have lock-jaw. That’s a common myth. However, their jaw muscles are so strong I can see why people would think they actually “lock”.

A very important thing to those who don’t know DOG BEHAVIOR:

    - NEVER LOOK AT AN UNKNOWN DOG’s EYES. This to the dog means you are challenging their position for alpha dog.

Something my Linguistics professor told me is that people that speak English look at people in the eyes when they talk. CONSTANTLY. This is a sign of paying attention & understanding & of truth in what they speak.

In certain cultures and places (& I’ll use the Spanish language & latino culture since it’s what I grew up with) looking at someone in the eyes is an act of dissrespect, challenge & you ONLY do it when you are telling the truth or being intimate. Not even your parents you look into their eyes. When they punish you, you tend to look down.

THIS IS WHY SOME PEOPLE GET BITTEN & DON’T KNOW.

However, in parrot behavior you have to constantly look at their eyes when you’re dealing with them wether it’s training or/and to give them affection.

You bet your sweet ass it does, JGo. I’m pretty sure that takes precedence over things like writing or… well anything else. Except pimpin’. The hand I ‘bate with is also my pimpin’ hand, so I had to get an assistant during my healing time to keep my bitches in line.

Gotta keep that pimp hand strong.

On another note, I think you are probably one of the only people to notice that I put that in there. LOL
    :P

You don’t always have to kill a locked pitbull unless it is a rogue pitt which in this case and many in America each and every day it does. What scares me the most about pitbull owners is their lack of knowledge or care to carry a break stick. So I carry a tent stake with me like the devil is coming if you are bold enough to get behind the dog and insert the break stick you can pop. What comes next is still a mystery!

So, so sad and frightening.  My god it must have felt like forever, several minutes of biting.  Other ppl too scared to die to be able to help you.   Ppl who own these dogs are pitiful.
