Victim Hacked To Death With An Axe After Being Mistaken For A BurglarRIO LINDA, CA - Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. A man has been charged with murder after using an axe on a man he incorrectly suspected of burglarizing his home.

When 29-year-old Steven Zinda arrived home in the early Sunday morning, his house was in the process of being burglarized. The intruder fled and Zinda took off after him wielding an axe.

At the same time, 20-year-old David Valdez was also having some bad luck after getting his SUV stuck in a ditch across the street from Valdez’s home while on the way home from a party. He was standing outside of his vehicle using his cell phone to call his girlfriend and his mother letting them know he would be home as soon as his friends showed up to help him.

That’s when he was approached by the axe-wielding Zinda and did like most of us would do if a strange, agitated man wielding an axe started coming towards you on an empty street at four in the morning — Valdez ran like hell. Unfortunately, Zinda caught up to him a quarter mile later and struck him with the axe he was carrying. Zinda returned home and called 911, explaining he had just injured a burglar.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and located Valdez’s's lifeless body, dead from “suffered trauma to his head and upper body.”

Zinda has been charged with murder and is being held in jail without bail. He does not have a criminal history and police say that drugs or alcohol did not play a role in Zinda’s actions. They also say they were unable to establish a connection between Valdez and the attempted robbery at Zinda’s residence.

I believe in the use of deadly force if you feel your life is in danger…but Zinda’s actions were ridiculous.

clearly ascribing to the philosophy of “kill everyone… let god sort ‘em out.”

…and police say that drugs or alcohol did not play a role in Zinda’s actions.

Okay so the guy was a hot headed asshole who no one ever told that it is not legal to be a hero with an ax and that is why we have police.

Civil court. Criminal court. Hmmmm…. Seems to me that he would have been ahead of the game if he had just gotten an alarm system or not had the redneck thought of Ah weel keel’m m’self muvver fuck’r.

WOW. Had he caught the guy *in* his house, he could have made hamburger helper out of him. But once you go running outside, how can you be sure it’s the same guy?? I guess this guy found out the hard way. How sad for the victim and his loved ones that he died so brutally, and for no reason at all.

  • Parrot Toes

Holy crap. This guy was probably a ticking time bomb then. At some point in his life, someone was going to suffer. Too bad the guy who did was innocent. I have no pity for this man at all.

And even if it had been the burglar, he was running scared. You cannot claim self-defence or protecting your home, if you’ve had to chase the interloper down a public road for a quarter mile.

You’re right, had he even chased down the right guy, it still would have been murder to ax the guy like that. Although I would’ve felt ALOT less sorry for the victim had it been the actual burglar. Many years ago, we were victims of a home invasion robbery. When we talked to the police about getting armed and good ideas afterward the cop had one sage piece of advice….”Do NOT shoot someone who is breaking in your house….wait for the sumbitch to actually make it in. Then shoot to kill- otherwise you risk getting sued later by the perp when he says he can’t work or have a life now because you shot him.” Luckily, I’ve never had to do that, but I would. IF the guy was IN my house….not 1/4 mile down the road!!!

This guy has another “Crazy” mugshot but this was all a damned accident.

HOWEVER, AN AXE??? You’d think he’d scare the guy outta the house & then called the cops… ticking time bomb.

I am quite surprised to hear that drugs or alcohol did not play a factor.

I think the only factor was mental illness. I have an axe, it’s out in the shop I’ve never found much need for it in the house, apparently he keeps his a little closer.
