Toddler Dies For Not Wanting To Wrestle With Mom’s Boyfriend
January 16, 2011 at 12:04 am by FlamingFoxAurora, CO- One thing for certain is that there are a lot of heartless assholes in this world and 30-year old Theodore Madrid is one of them. On January 5, Madrid was drunk and high on marijuana while watching his girlfriend’s 2-year old son, Caden Rodgers. Madrid told police that he was wrestling with Caden and when the boy didn’t want to wrestle with him any more, it made him angry.
Madrid first said that out of frustration he body slammed Caden onto a bed, but later changed his story and said he picked Caden up and threw him across a room, likely slamming his head on a bed frame.
Caden’s mother, 26-year old Ashley Rodgers, called 911 sometime after midnight on Jan. 5 and said that her son, who was being watched by Madrid while she worked, had hit his head and wouldn’t wake up. When the police entered the apartment, they found Caden lying on the floor and bleeding from the back of his head. He also had bruises on his forehead.
Madrid told the officers that the reason he didn’t call 911 for two hours or Caden’s mother at the time was because he was afraid of getting into trouble. Caden was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and Madrid was arrested for felony child abuse.
Caden’s mother told the police that she had never witnessed Madrid display any violence toward her son in the past, but on the night before, Madrid had called her at work and said he had been ‘kinda rough’ with Caden while wrestling with him. Inside the apartment, the police photographed several bloody rags and towels in the bedroom, as well as blood on the floor, carpet, bedding, bed frame, doors, mirrors and walls. Marijuana was found on a dresser and a window sill and open alcohol containers were found around the room. Tests on Madrid showed he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.177, which is way above the legal driving limit of 0.08.
Sadly, little Caden didn’t make it. He was pronounced dead at 9:20 p.m. the following day, Jan. 6. Thanks to the compassion of an extraordinary pilot, his grandfather, Mark Dickinson, was able to be with him when he died. Dickinson was flying from Los Angeles to Aurora to pay his last respects to Caden who was due to be taken off his life support machine. After battling a long line at the security checkpoint, Dickinson was twelve minutes late to his departure gate. Fearing he would miss his flight, Dickinson grabbed his shoes at security and sprinted in his socks through the terminal.
To his surprise, the pilot was standing by the jet-way waiting for him. The pilot said, “Are you Mark? We held the plane for you and we’re so sorry about the loss of your grandson.” Dickinson told the pilot that he could not thank him enough for holding the plane and the pilot responded,”They can’t go anywhere without me and I wasn’t going anywhere without you. Now relax. We’ll get you there. And again, I’m so sorry.”
Theodore Madrid was charged on Jan. 10 with first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse resulting in death. He is being held in jail without bond.
Much thanks to silvahalo68 for bringing this story to our forums. Our condolences go out to Caden’s family.
