Tampa, FL -- While attending a family gathering on New Year’s Eve, police say 23-year-old Xavier Thomas walked off with his 6-year-old son and stabbed the child nearly two dozen times before abandoning him at a playground. According to police, the family was outside lighting fireworks when Thomas disappeared with the boy. Family members noticed the child was missing about 20 minutes later and began searching for him. Right about then, Thomas returned to the apartment without the kid. When relatives asked where the boy was, Thomas took off running. Relatives then called police to report the child missing. As police arrived on scene, the child, Xavier Thomas Jr., reappeared – he was covered in blood and had been stabbed repeatedly in the back, chest, neck and arms. Though the boy lost a lot of blood, none of the injuries were life threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery. Physically, anyway. Police have not yet identified the motive behind the attack, but Yvonne Mickles, Thomas’ grandmother, said that just six weeks ago, Thomas was being treated for mental illness. She said he suffers from trauma after seeing two friends die in separate incidents. She believes he must have been off his meds that night. Thomas was arrested a short time after the attack and booked on charges of attempted murder. He is being held without bond. Police say Thomas has a rather lengthy rap sheet that dates back to about 2003 with charges ranging from possession of cocaine to burglary. Thanks, Dakota.

Meds or not, this sounds premeditated. He knew to take the child somewhere else, away from witnesses and he knew to run when they asked where the child was when he came back. This tells me he knew right from wrong and knew exactly what he was doing.

Lock his ass up forever! The punk-ass bitch can’t be trusted to take responsibility for his mental health by taking his medication – he has no business being a member of society. He is mentally ill and should be kept in a home – certainly self medicating on cocaine isn’t helping him either.

You don’t think people experiencing psychotic breaks can know exactly what they are doing? That’s not necessarily the measure of whether or not someone is sane. In some cases, people who have murdered loved ones during psychotic breaks have known what they were doing was wrong, but believed it was their only choice because (insert religious figure or “voices” here) told them there would be broader consequences if they didn’t.

There seems to be this general belief that severe mental illness means people are speaking in tongues and rocking in corners and have no idea what they’re doing when they lash out at loved ones because they’re seeing the devil or something. That’s the case sometimes, but a lot of severely mentally ill are in control, it’s just a different kind of control… a broken kind of control.

That said, I’m not convinced that this guy was that kind of mentally ill.

Horriffic, this makes me want to throw up! I am glad he will be able to physically recuperate, but the mental pain he will endure through out his life from his own father attacking him and trying to kill him!!!, that wil be a process that will take years to somewhat heal through therapy. I hope the little guys family will make sure he does get help therapy wise.
