CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte police would love some help tracking down the man who they say walked into a Carolinas Medical Center cancer center and stole gaming systems used by children who are being treated for cancer. Yesterday police released two surveillance pictures of the suspect standing in the hallway at the hospital before getting on to the elevator, one has him looking directly into the camera. The suspect was wearing a toboggan which appeared to be blue or purple.  He was also wearing glasses, a thick black coat and had a back pack. When the man leaves the cancer center, which was closed at the time, that back pack would contain five consoles, including Xboxes. “You really have to wonder about somebody who would take something from kids who are really having a tough time,” said Kevin McCarthy, spokesman for Carolinas HealthCare System. “This helps give them a little comfort while they’re going through the treatment.” If anyone knows who this guy is, you are asked to call 911.

Karma is quite the bitch and after stealing from kids with cancer, I’m sure she’ll be paying this asshole a visit soon.

I hate when these stories start coming out. I mean, people are dicks year-round, but there’s something about the pressure and opportunity of the holiday season that sends some people to particularly heartless heights.

At least there’s a pretty clear shot of the asshole.

There’s a special place in hell for people that do Grinch like stuff to sick/dying people…

This Steve Urkell lookalike will get his comeupance really fast since the idiot made himself available to the masses with the picture & when they hear in jail what he did & that he also showed his face in the video surveillance, he’ll be Pinto-ed by Silverbacks. He’ll surely be the HO-HO-HO-e of the county jail.

    @NEWMAN:

    Don’t even go there Newman.

If someone stole my Xbox, it would result in a front-page-worthy beatdown.

Seriously, do not mess with my console!

As awful as this man’s actions are, there are citizens and companies that will replace them. One of the fortunate virtues of American is that they volunteer more and give more money to charity than any other nation.

This sucks, but it will be okay.

Update: After seeing the story on Kotaku, EA has contacted the Carolinas Medical Center and will be replacing the consoles and supplying them with new games. From an EA spokesperson:

“This story really struck us at EA. We can’t believe someone would do this right before Christmas and victimize kids recovering from cancer no less. We’ve made contact with the hospital and EA’s going to step up to replace the Carolinas Medical Center’s consoles before Christmas and hook them up with new games as well. Hopefully this will brighten up the kids’ holidays. Thanks for bringing this story to the attention of the industry.”

Update 2: The Halo Waypoint team at Microsoft dropped us a line to let us know that they also had a care package on the way

@silentpanda: One of things true about people is that the best in them comes out when the worst in others comes out.

Times are tight for both businesses and consumers. I am proud of both (soon maybe more?) companies stepping forward to make other people’s burdens lighter.

UPDATE: Charles Hinton is being charged with burglary, larceny after burglary and damage to property.

He was arrested late Friday (December 17) afternoon.

Hinton was caught on tape earlier this month breaking into the Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Center at Levine Children’s Hospital.

According to hospital officials, that thief stole 10 video gaming systems – including 4 PlayStations, 1 Xbox, 1 Game Cube, 2 Game Boys and 2 Nintendo DS systems.

The hospital has received 13 total systems since people heard about the crime.

I’m sorry, I don’t know how to create a link to the article featuring the arrest.
