Man Accused Of Beating Neighbor’s Dog With Metal Rake

Mission Viejo, CA — Michael Patterson, 51, is looking at charges of first-degree residential burglary and felony animal cruelty after he reportedly broke in to a neighbor’s home and beat the snot out of their 5-year-old German Shepherd, Honey, with a metal rake. According to police, angered by the dog’s incessant barking, Patterson went to the neighbor’s home to confront him about the critter’s noise. Witnesses heard Patterson beating on the door Tuesday afternoon, screaming, “I’m going to kill you, and I’m going to kill your dog!” Taking advantage of the neighbor’s absence, Patterson allegedly kicked in the front door, found Honey on the back patio, picked up the rake, and repeatedly bashed the dog in the face. Police responded to the residence after neighbors called 911. Near the front door, they found the bloody rake – Honey was hiding out in the tub. The dog was left with numerous puncture wounds to the face and was blinded. Michael Patterson remains in custody in custody in lieu of $52,500 bail. If convicted on all charges, he’s facing a maximum sentence of six years and eight months. Mission Viejo animal services said they never received a complaint about a barking dog at that address.
