NEWPORT, Mich. – When Robert Manley arrived home from work early Wednesday morning, his 15-year-old daughter was missing and the front door looked as if it had been forced open. 911 was called and an Amber Alert issued. Within hours Taylor E. Manley’s body, along with 38-year-old Raymond R. Bush, were found dead in his truck parked almost 200 miles away in a small Newport cemetery. She had been shot multiple times and he had shot himself. No definitive motive at this point, but it probably had a lot to do with the fact that Manley was scheduled to testify against Bush in a sexual assault case that morning. Bush was a friend of Taylor’s mother and he and the teen had been involved in a sexual relationship. When her mother found out about it, police were called and Bush was eventually charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, a felony, and was free after posting $50,000 bond. Manley had been preyed upon by Bush, according to her father, and even had her name tattooed on the back of his neck. Her family says she had moved in with her father to get away from him. Here’s the even creepier part. An ex-girlfriend of Bush said he had called her that morning and told her he’d shot and killed Manley and planned on killing himself. She called police, but he stopped by her residence where she saw Manley’s dead body in the van.

This gives me chills. I remember the terror we lived with when my daughter was sexually assaulted by a family member and she pressed charges against him. He bonded out once for a month and then was placed back in jail with a higher bond the next go around and there he stayed. He did his time and is now out and we still look over our shoulders, but that one moment and that one month changed our lives forever. I feel so sorry for this father and mother and the poor young girl who had her life cut short due to this monster. If there is a hell, I hope he’s there and he finds out the meaning of eternity one slow fiery second at a time.

Any man 38 years old that would even consider having a relationship with a 15 year old is unstable and very insecure to begin with. I think these “statutory” laws need to be upgraded to impose much harsher punishments. This sick shit makes me cringe.

That’s just…wow. That’s fucked up. I mean, knowing a person who was 22 and had a relationship with a 13-year-old freaked me out enough, but this…that’s so messed up. Third-degree criminal sexual conduct? It might not be the same as roofie-ing someone and gang-raping them, but a “consensual” sexual relationship with THAT much of an age difference (especially with an obviously messed-up guy) should really not be so low a felony. I know police usually have a lot on their hands in cities like Newport, but couldn’t they at least have given some degree of protection/surveillance to a witness like this?

This girl had an ongoing sexual relationship for well over a year before with this man before Mom even had a clue….. I wonder how the heck mom did not know her high school daughter was having a an ongoing sexual relationship with this grown man?

Ive heard that the age of consent in Michigan is 16. which sounds pretty backwood in itself.. Regardless this guy at 38 was a complete loser to become sexually involved with a girl that age…And another thing thats makes him even MORE of a loser is that he has a kid OLDER than the girl he was sexually involved with……He has two kids of his own.. one 11 and one 17..
The vitcim was young and obviously at the age where her decision making wasnt the best… but wtf was he thinking?

    No kidding….. :-(

With that big of an age difference, another year for her to become ‘legal’ wouldn’t have made a difference. It was still going to be wrong.

I do wonder what kind of relationship she had with her father before all this…

Yes it is 16 and you have to be within 5 years of the kids age to have a relationship with them.

That’s the rule in Michigan? We go by the “rule of 3″ (mostly) here in Texas, although thats a loose rule and honestly they don’t have to stick by it and a lot of times don’t, especially in my county. And it’s more convoluted than just that. Age of consent seems to just determine the charges they can press against you.

Thats inaccurate.. .. Since the age of consent is is 16 then a 12 year old is not legally able to consent.. – the law means that a 16 yr old can legally date a 21 yrs old..IN other words.. both parties must be at least 16..

Maybe my understanding of the law is somewhat blurred.

So my daughter comes home today and says to me “a girl from the high school died” I look over and ask how and she answers “she was shot in the graveyard” I asked her how she knew about this and she tells me this girls “ex-boyfriend” rides her bus and was telling her about it. I had no clue that this girl moved from our town. What a small world. I pray for these parents because I would be ready to lose my mind!

    Absolutely right!

If she’s underage, don’t get a tattoo of her name just yet.

  • TARHEELS BABY!

Seems like your understanding in general is probably pretty blurred lol

This guy has got to be pretty close to the emotional equivalent of a 15-year-old, probably slow or an abuse victim or something else happened to him that arrested his development. A normal man would never be able to tolerate the emotional stupidity of a 15-year-old girl… I know at 30, I’ve had friendships with a couple girls in the 20-22 year old range and even that is extremely difficult for me to tolerate at times… a “normal” 38-year-old wouldn’t be able to maintain a year-long relationship with an adolescent girl, that’s just not how things work.

Are you worried that he’ll have to live with that tattoo for the rest of his life?
