“I shot three times, and he ran away bleeding.”

September 1, 2010 at 1:28 am by

Decatur, AL – Ethel Jones, 69, was asleep in her bed early Monday morning when she heard a noise – it sounded as if someone was trying to get into her home. She grabbed the .38-caliber snubnose revolver she keeps under her pillow and headed for the relative safety of her bathroom. When the noise subsided, Ethel crept out of her bathroom, only to be confronted by a stranger standing in her bedroom. She couldn’t see his face, only the penlight he held in his hand. No matter – she aimed for that and started firing. I shot three times, and he ran away bleeding, said the pistol packin’ grandma. “Then I called 911.” The bleeding stranger with a new hole in his gut was 18-year-old Michael Bynum. He ran screaming to his own home, just 200 yards away, and was transported to the hospital by private vehicle. An arrest warrant was issued for Bynum on charges of 2nd degree burglary. After his release from the hospital, he was jailed and bond was set at $10,000. When authorities learned that Bynum was on probation for a prior burglary conviction, his probation was immediately revoked, as was his bond. “I hope this will make people have second thoughts before they break into a home in our neighborhood and stop some of the crime we’ve had around here,” she said. “I hate it happened, but it’s just something that couldn’t be helped, he should have known better.” Interview with Ethel, my new hero, can be seen here.

    Ethel Jones = Hero

    Michael Bynum = Zero

Taking out an airconditioner is not silent. It makes me wonder if he didn't care about the noise because he didn't plan to leave her alive to tell anyone. Since he was already on probation for another burglary who knows what he may have had in mind. Good for her.

  • lisaznola

I am so happy Ethel was his target. If it was a less prepared woman she might be dead.

    Go Ethel!

  • PlaysWithBalls

That is one bad ass woman. I sorta wish she was my grandma.

  • angela

Maybe he figured she was 70 yrs old and wouldn’t hear the commotion

“He ran screaming to his own home” Nothing and I mean Nothing hurts worse than a gut shot. Good Job Ethel, If you ever need a place to stay let me know k?

Hopefully Mr. Bynum will learn his lesson and get a real job.

This woman is so badass! Way to go, Ethel!

  • minjofu

It'd be interesting to learn his real motivation.. like what was going through his mind when he decided to do this.. Is it a compulsion, or is he just that stupid? .. and I agree with the person who said he may not have intended to leave anyone alive..

I'm just curious as to wether or not he stole anything during the first burglary.. I think that would explain his motives this time around..

I love my handgun. My .357 magnum revolver is my friend. When assaulted by a “Bad” guy, just the sight of its 6 inch barrel that has a hole as big as your index finger is enough to make the “Bad” guy shit his pants!! When that hollow point, lead slug bites into his azzzz, some body part is going to come off and hit the dirt. DNA evidence, I call it. Know the law in your state but always remember: The police are not obligated to protect citizens. The Supreme court has ruled on that. It is up to you to defend yourself from the “BAD” guys.

Ethel should be teaching other grannies at the shooting range! You Go Grandma!

  • Boughtthefarm

    Awesome job, Ethel!

That’s awesome! I always kinda thought that people that slept with a gun under their pillow were a bit paranoid…but where would this woman be if she didn’t! Way to go, Ethel!

  • Gee

Ethel just help the cause for crimes against the elderly. You go Grand Ma. At the very least Punk Asses around her neighborhood won’t be messing with her.

I love this woman! I have a feeling this will end up in “The Armed Citizen” section of American Rifleman magazine very soon. *applause*

She was lucky that this stupid punk was carrying a pen light because it provided the perfect target to focus on.

  • Athena

Damn. I wonder how bad the neighborhood is that this woman felt the need to keep a .38 snubnose UNDER HER PILLOW.

By the way, folks – stories featuring that particular location for a gun don’t usually end this well, just in case you were getting any ideas.

And just think… some liberals want to take this woman’s right to self-defense away from her.

    Howdy, Athena:
Even good neighborhoods can have a rare visitation by a bad apple.
Stories featuring a home owner with a firearm tend to end better than stories featuring a home owner who has to rely on the mercy of a lawbreaker.
Yes, some liberals still believe that the home owner should not be armed. Look again at the story about the woman who shot the burglar. How would it have ended if her right to defend herself had been removed by a liberal?

  • ProudWife05

Go Granny! I wish she were my grandma :) This woman is old school, you can see that she don't take no shit! I love stories with happy endings.

  • Athena

Hi, Ernesto – Actually, you’re wrong (although I appreciate your point) – in roughly 70% of cases, a burgler finds a homeowner’s gun and uses it against them before they have the chance to defend themselves. But that’s beside the point.

My point was A.) that under your pillow is NOT the best place to store a gun, and B.) that this woman’s right to a firearm may have saved her life. Had she been in DC during the handgun ban, this would have been a more tragic story.

Hey Athena, Theres a older gent that goes to my church that was dreaming that someone was in his bedroom so what did he do? He shot himself in the leg in a partial sleep / waking state. It went in through the upper hip and came out below the knee. So you have a good point. Damned in most cases if you do and damned if you don’t.

  • Sheeppiss

I absolutely love this woman. I really hope none of his “homeboys” seek retaliation

  • aka jas

His job will be chillin in the pen.

  • aka jas

I had to pull a gun on some crack head that was breaking into my kitchen window once. Man, I have never wanted to shoot someone. But damn it, if I have to, I will. Good for you Ethel! That gut shot will hurt this idiot for the rest of his life. Good reminder.

  • Sash1186

This woman makes me smile! I wish this was always how stories ended.

Yep for a little while, The judge will be lenient since he was shot during

the attempted crime. I would think this is the end of his criminal career

    but I am an optimist.

I keep my .45 in the holster and hang that on my bed post within reach. Putting it under the pillow seems pretty dangerous. I don't want to roll over the wrong way and get a new hole in my head.

  • Ernestoguevara

    Hi, Athena:

Your statistics appear to come from the Kellerman study. Arthur Kellerman, as I recall, withdrew his study when his numbers and methods were discredited. One critic was Don Kates.

Bed posts make great holster hangers, I do the same with my 9mm, Kenny.

  • JGo555

I think his homeboyds will probably laugh their asses off when they realized that Ethel (she even has an old lady's name) p*wned him.

  • Kwumey

*rofl*@ He ran screaming to his own home HHAHAHAHAHA ..the punk bitch.

Much LOVE and props to you Ms Jones!!! God Bless! ( just wish you aimed just a bit lower *efg* *
*tossing confetti and roses* @ you.. YOU GO GIRL!!

I thought I might help out a little here. I graduated from Decatur High. I live in Cullman County now because it is pretty bad there now. Granny’s neighborhood is backed up to crack and meth houses. There are good streets but everything in that area is slowly but surely being taken over. The affleunt of Decatur live way away from this section of town and even they are starting to have problems. I hope that clears up any questions.

Go grandma! Sometimes you have to take the law into your own hands, with in reason of course.
