Convicted Child Pornographer Comatose After Vicious Jailhouse Beatdown

Scranton, PA – A couple of years ago, we posted a story about Nicholas Pinto, child pornographer extraordinaire. Long story short, Pinto was charged with 87 counts of counts of manufacturing and possession of child pornography and placed in Lackawanna County Prison to await sentencing. That was back in 2008 – fast forward to August 8. For whatever reason, Pinto was not being held in protective custody as most perverts are – he was a member of the general population. On that day, as he was walking back to his cell block from a rec area, he was attacked by fellow inmate, Michael Simonson. The assailant, who has a history of violence, reportedly knocked Pinto to the floor and stomped on his head at least 15 times “with all his might.” After he was done Riverdancing on Pinto’s melon, Simonson walked into his own cell and scrubbed the pervert’s blood from his black tennis shoes. Pinto was left with a shattered face and brain injuries that rendered him comatose. This wasn’t exactly the first act of violence Pinto faced behind bars…
From day one, Pinto kept a journal of his day-to-day life at Lackawanna. In that 20-page diary, tales of rape, abuse and mistreatment. “The overall treatment I have received from both the prison and (the prison’s) medical providers (is) unconstitutional, insufficient, cruel, inhumane and shamefully unacceptable,” Pinto wrote in April. He wrote of being repeatedly ass raped by an inmate he named “The Silverback.” “First night is bleeding but no penetration,” he wrote. “The next night (and never again, he lies) is full-on jailhouse Bubba.” He talks about abuse, both physical and mental, from the prison guards. He said he was forced to stand in Cell 4 hours at a time, allowed to sit only after lights out. “Can’t sleep in freezing cell, naked, cold concrete and no place to sit. … I stand for 3 or 4 days.” He claims a voice over the public-address system sometimes chanted, “4-cell, kill yourself!” According to a former inmate, on at least one occasion, Pinto and several violent inmates were released from their cells into a common area where a guard got on the PA system and yelled, “Go get ‘em, boys!” And get ‘em they did. Former and current inmates back up Pinto’s claims of abuse while telling their own tales of mistreatment. All of their complaints, they said, were ignored by prison staff.
Pinto, who was due to be sentenced in October, was recently moved from a Scranton hospital to a long-term acute-care facility. Simonson, recently convicted on charges of second-degree murder in the beating death of Donnie Skiff, was immediately sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty at his pre-trial hearing on Wednesday. I’m guessing that any extra charges he may get for the cranium crushing really aren’t going to make a helluva difference.
