Amateur Ghost Hunter Investigating Ghost Train Killed By Real TrainSTATESVILLE, N.C. — Early Friday morning. a small group of ghost hunters ended up becoming part of the legend they went to investigate.

The group of twelve had gathered on the railroad trestle at Buffalo Shoals Road in Statesville where, over 100 year ago, a train wreck happened that killed about two dozen people. They were there to investigate the legend that claims you can hear or see the doomed train on each anniversary of the accident.

Unfortunately for the group, they happened to be on the trestle when a Norfolk Southern train came around the bend at around 2:45 in the morning. The conductor saw the group and tried to stop the train but was unable to do so before striking and killing 29-year-old Christopher Kaiser. His body was found in a nearby ravine.

Another woman with the group was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Several reports say that Kaiser pushed the woman out of the train’s path before he was hit.

I’ve included some video detailing the original accident, the trestle and the ghost stories surrounding it. I’ve also included an image I took from Google Maps that shows the bridge is pretty long, even longer with a freight train bearing down on you.

No video. Stuff like this fascinates me. Maybe they should have bothered to find out the train schedule before they went and played on the bridge. Tragic.

  • Kittyskyfish

Now people will go out and listen for *this* accident.

  • http://www.dreamindemon.com Morbid

    Fixed the video.

  • cplpunishment

Jump already the ground is softer than the train and it is not moving at 80 mph and being pushed by 400 tons of steel. Damn how many tressel deaths does it take for people to stay off of them?
This should be on the News for everyone to see like the Casey Anthony case so lunatics know not what to do.

  • Boughtthefarm

Even if they didn't see, couldn't they hear the damn thing? Trains aren't quiet.

  • Kgirlgone

They thought it was the “Ghost Train”……

It must have been one of those new Hybrid Trains.. Ya never hear them coming.

ehh that drop is extremely steep, I dont know that a jump would have fared much better. We liek to go out to supposedly haunted places, but we wouldnt really go out there because of the dangers. That photo doesn't do it any real justice in how high/long that is.

  • guillotinegirl

This story is irony at its finest.

  • Lookn4mayberry

It doesnt matter how many times its in the news. People will STILL do it. Go on train tressels, leave kids or pets in cars , leave toddlers near the pool unattended, etc.

    Amateurs.

  • Onyx

Wonder if had they laid down flat between the rails there would have been enough
ground clearance for the train to pass over them without hitting them

  • DastardlyDog

I couldn't get the video to work either. Don't ghost busting groups have some sort of professionalism? They meet, talk over the logistics, check potential problems, implement solutions, troubleshoot? Like checking train schedules, ways OFF the trestle if need be? How old were these people?

  • JGo555

It surprises me the stupidity of those that believe in ghosts….

  • The_Shadow_Knows

If they were professionals, they wouldn't be out on a trestle in the middle of the night looking for ghosts.

All you need to see ghosts is a jug of corn liquor.

  • The_Shadow_Knows

Maybe. It would have been their best shot anyway.

  • http://www.dreamindemon.com Morbid

Turns out the girl he saved was his girlfriend. She could not keep up with the rest of the group as they ran safely off the track. So he kept pace with her and at the last second, when he realized she would not make it, he told her he loved her and pushed her off the trestle. A lot of new details here: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/08/30/165

  • The_Shadow_Knows

You were right. The woman he pushed survived the fall and was sent home from the hospital within a few days, so her injuries clearly weren't all that bad. They both should have jumped.

Still, we have to give him a little credit for saving her life at the expense of his own, even though he probably didn't have to die. And even though sitting on a train trestle in the middle of the night looking for nonexistent ghosts is one of the stupidest errands imaginable.

If they kept they’re cool, dangle over the edge.

Where some see pushing a person to safety, others may see pushing a person out of the damn way.

  • tapu

    you’re a pro at this???

  • tapu

oh, just great! and there’s no “delete post”
