Gonzales, CA – Police say a 9-year-old girl was hit by a mid-size SUV while walking to school early this morning and the woman accused of hitting her is also accused of leaving the scene. The child, who was walking in a clearly marked pedestrian crosswalk, was thrown 30-40 feet and was airlifted to an out-of-county hospital after suffering a rather severe leg injury. Thankfully, the injuries are non-life threatening and she is expected to fully recover. The driver, who left her vehicle behind, returned to the scene of the accident about seven minutes after she left it. Maricela Medina Leon told officers she took off because because she needed to go home to change clothes and that she needed to see her own child off to school. Twenty bucks says she crapped her pants about 2.5 seconds after impact. The 40-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run and several other motor vehicle infractions. Police don’t believe alcohol was a factor, but are investigating whether speed or distraction due to cell phone use might be.

Well, they do say you should always wear clean underwear in case you get in an accident.

Asshole! WTF?! Who are all these goddamn mouthbreathers?! You hit someone's child, you fucking cockgobbler!

  • cplpunishment

Where the hell were her parents? What the crap are they thinking letting a 9 year old walk to school alone in this day and time. I don't let any of my children out of my site for a minute. Hopefully they will learn from this and be thankful that she wasn't abducted and they can still hold her and love her back to health.

I am with you Ms. Jaded she probably need to change her underwear, Sounds like a shitty mess of a situation. I would have stayed and helped until rescued arrived and then went for clean Fruit of the looms.

    Nightmare #2–Hurting a child.

    This would kill me.

How do we know the parents weren't there, Cpl? We don't. I didn't specify their whereabouts and neither did the source article. And even if they had been, I can't see how they could prevent such a thing from happening.

Looking both ways before crossing the street comes to mind. Idiots fly up and down the road with one thing in mind….Destination. If the parents were around which I am suspecting they were not they could have prevented her from stepping into the crosswalk by grabbing her. A roadside peddler saved my son's life one time which makes me very aware around streets and sidewalks now. Everything happens for reasons.

    *Just sayin

    lol You said cockgobbler!

How do you hit a child and leave 'em. Especially when you have kids of your own. Something is effed up about this. I don't care if she really did crap her pants. Who does that??

That's not entirely true, some times shitty things happen to good people just because. There is not always a reason.

You never never never leave the scene of an accident. I can't imagine leaving a child laying inn the flipping road or what kind of monster would do such.

  • Sugarglider1

Agreed…one of the other DD front page stories today is about some ugly dumbass looking down and reaching into her purse for cigarettes while driving, and thus mowing down people standing on the sidewalk.

I'm sorry, but when I hear parents say they don't let their children out of their sight, unless those children are still toddlers, my heart bleeds for them. And “in this day and time”? You must be misinformed. Violent crime is, nationally, at the lowest point in recorded history (we started recording nationally in 1972). Traffic fatalities are at a record low (we started recording those in 1961). Walking to school has never been safer.

If you try to protect your children from every little thing that could possibly happen to the point of never letting them out of your sight, that's called being overprotective and – lemme tell you – you're not doing your children any favors. Statistically, overprotective parents have fatter, less socially adjusted children with under-developed executive functions (self-control, judgment). These are the kids who hit 18 like a brick wall because they were never allowed to develop the tools to navigate adulthood when they were young. They're the kids that have nervous breakdowns in college, rack up too many credit cards or one-night stands. They develop drug habits or abusive relationships because they had a parent looking over their shoulder for 18 years, thus, were never able to look out for themselves.

I'm shocked that you would place blame on parents who were letting a nine year old – not a 4 year old, a child who will be in middle school in no time flat – walk to school. This is NOT their fault. In fact, they were doing the right thing. Their child was doing the right thing. It was the SUV driver who was in the wrong.

I was waiting for Athena to give her over-protective parent speech. I agree whole heartily and I would have said as much but I figured Athena would do a better job!

I don't know how I feel about being known for my over-protective parent speech. :P Thanks for the kind words, though.

Great opinion Athena, I will pray when your child walks to school she will never be abducted seeing how you depend on statistics. I will be protective of my children til the day I die. Just because you have an opinion does not make you right.

You raise your children I will raise mine. Even though you think my prayers are futile that is your opinion and doesn't necessarily make it true before you reply on how there is no God.

I cannot imagine leaving an injured child lying in the road. Especially if I was the one that did it!
I can imagine losing control if I did hit a child. But would never leave like that.

I only know you for that cause our opinions on the matter are very similar and I like the way you explain it.

  • JGo555

I can't believe the whole leaving the scene to see her own child off to school… I bet you she was doing something like texting or something & didn't realize what happened until a few min. later.
