ORLANDO, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff’s office performed a sex sting, posing as women who were looking for men on Craigslist to have sex with them and their underage children. During the four-day operation, police snagged 15 men as they each showed up at a home under the understanding that they would be having sex with children from the ages of 8 to 14. The men’s ages ranged from 18 to 67 and what they expected to find at the home was pretty disgusting. The 67-year-old man was quoted as saying, “This is what I’ve waited a lifetime for. The opportunity to have sex with a 14-year-old girl and her mother.” One man brought candy for a 13-year-old girl who was to perform gymnastics in the nude. “This group of folks were as disgusting as any group we’ve arrested,” sheriff Grady Judd said. And who they snared in their sting was also a shock to some. Married men with children, a little league coach who coached the son of one of the arresting officers and a local hero. “It’s still a shock to me when we have predators show up with condoms in one hand and candy bars in the other,” Judd said. Some still argue entrapment with these types of stings, and I understand their point to a certain degree. But you gotta be one sick sumbitch if you could even be entrapped with the offer of having sex with an 8-year-old girl in the first place.

I have a problem with Dateline being involved with these stings, because I think it crosses a line of journalistic ethics for a news program to be involved in “making” the news. I have no problem with the police doing them. Lock the fuckers up.

  • boughtthefarm

I don't mean any disrespect Shadow but, I don't have a problem with Dateline. They are performing a public service and they ought to get a damn award for helping police. I really don't care how they catch the sleezy, nasty bastards like fucking grandpa who has waited all his life to screw a 14 YO and her mother. When you were 14 did ya want a nasty 67 YO on top of you?? I am still wretching over the thought of these MFers!

  • soplisako80

I say keep up the good work officers!! Get these freaks off the streets and away from our kids!! They should have more stings like this if you ask me.. Watching the dateline shows has proven that there are a lot more of these creeps than any of us could ever imagined.

  • The_Shadow_Knows

I have no problem with the police running these stings, and I hope they throw the book at these guys. My beef with Dateline (which as far as I know wasn't involved with this case, so this is a bit off topic) is that I believe it's unethical for journalists to “make” the news. It would be like a reporter driving around setting fires so he can write stories about them. The police can sting these fuckers just fine without any help from Dateline, so it's basically just a publicity stunt for the news program. And I also worry that some shyster defense attorney might use the involvement of Dateline to somehow get his client off. These bastards need to be incarcerated – preferably in general population – and I don't want publicity-seeking news programs to do anything to compromise that.

As far as this being “entrapment” on the part of the police goes: if you told me you were going to show me a 13 year old girl doing nude gymnastics, I would punch your teeth down your throat. Anyway who comes running at that kind of invitation has criminal intentions and needs to be locked up.

  • 62Julietandvoid

Dateline rawks! Throw these fucks to the wolves!

  • Isabella Serafina

Not me. Whatever it takes to get these fucks out of society. And I volunteer to help in any way I can!

  • Isabella Serafina

I know! How many more of these skeevy bastards are out there? I heard once for every one they catch, there are ten who have never been caught. It's like cockroaches. If you see one, you know there's at least a hundred in the woodwork.

So glad the wives of the men weren't trying to support these sick dudes. That is awesome!

  • boughtthefarm

In every episode of Dateline that I have seen, they used undercover cops as bait and LE are there to make the arrests. Its seems to me that LE is running the show and Dateline is there to film it and make it public. Arrests of any nature are public record. I don't see any way these pervs can get off on a Dateline technicality. Hasn't happened yet.

  • Odinswarrior

Dateline is doing a service, they are putting it out there just how sick some of the bastards are. They showed one guy come to have sex with a 12-13y/o and he brought his baby son (like under 3y/o) They are not “ambulance” chasing as you may think. If those pervs weren't taking innocence away from children they wouldn't have to be there.
I look at dateline as a way to maybe force parents to start watching thier kids and stop sitting on the sofa watching TV all day.
my example, thre is a pedofile that lived in my apt complex. the mom swore she knew what her kids were always doing and she was watching them. well her kids were going into the perverts apt. She had no idea.. When another kid got molested the mother was like my kids were in no harm, they never went near him.. when I showed her photos of her kids going into his apt. she was floored.. told her to get her fat ass off the sofa and watch her kids,.

I think the general distaste we have for child sex predators would probably keep any judge from letting one of these slimeballs off. It's only entrapment if the predator is coerced to commit a crime they wouldn't normally have committed. These assh*ls walked right into a perfectly legal trap. 8 year olds? That is nasty. Even Pedobear would be ashamed.

  • boughtthefarm

Not only that Barbara, but cops have been setting up prostitutes and the men who buy them for decades. And nobody is driving [literally] these men to their final destination but themselves.

  • Janelle

Little league coach, local hero. . . . reminds me of the X-Files words of wisdom: “trust no one.”

  • Sugarglider1

    Hear, hear.

  • taterbugs

You mentioned the guy that brought his baby. But I remember seeing one guy they set up and upon searching his car. Found condoms, rope, duct tape and I can't recall what else. Who in the hell knows what he was planning on doing to what he thought was a 14/15 yr old. There was this one guy on there that has been caught twice! Its disturbing! They don't learn and I don't care how they're caught! As long as they are caught!

Doesn't anyone here see an issue with the police spending there time creating criminals? I mean are there no actual crimes (that have already been committed) to investigate in Orlando? OH wait, those don't net complacent non-violent offenders that private prisons like to put to work for $.18-$1.00 an hour with no safety regulations. These men were clearly willing to break the law but would they have if the opportunity never presented itself? Doesn't it give anyone else the heeby-jeebies that the police are making money off of these arrests? That the cops are in bed with private-prison contractors? You think maybe these public employees might have better spend their time responding to emergency calls? (the length of response time in Orlando is so bad that deaths have been attributed to it) or enforcing DV stay-way orders (that get violated & the stories wind up here)? Or even lurking around Disney World looking for actual pedos out stalking actual children? Or what about taking some of the cash they used to net these a-holes & investing in child abuse prevention? Or comprehensive mental health treatment? Really you all *applaud* this? It's sickening.

  • Siobhan

My concern would be that Dateline's involvement could cause legal/ethical problems that might interfere with the prosecution of such cases. It would be a travesty if a perpetrator were to receive reduced sentencing, or be acquitted due to improprieties (or perceived improprieties) by the press.

  • Siobhan

I'd be willing to wager that many of these perpetrators are carrying rape kits in their vehicles.

  • Intelligentvirtue

heehee Shadow, good stuff hon. I think journalism devoid of sensationalism has been extinct since Hearst. It would be lovely to get news from a reliable news source that doesn't have the bottom line or beaucracy looming over it.

  • Intelligentvirtue

No. I think in this circumstance intent was present when they scoured craigslist for this type of activity. Also, not only did they participate in seeking out *gag* underage children but they intended to follow through with it.

  • The_Shadow_Knows

These guys ARE actual pedos. They weren't stalking actual children, but they didn't KNOW that. And this IS child abuse prevention – because these guys are off the street and can't go after REAL kids next time.

The whole point of a sting like this is you get the guys BEFORE they leave a child's dead body in a ditch somewhere, rather than after. Or would you rather see raped and/or dead children before every arrest?

  • Parrot Toes (kathybird)

“Doesn't it give anyone else the heeby-jeebies that the police are making money off of these arrests?”

You know what gives me the heebie jeebies? Child predators like the ones that were busted in this sting.

“Really you all *applaud* this? It's sickening. “

*Claps very VERY loudly and enthusiastically* Fucking right I applaud them. Personally, I think you are sickening for thinking otherwise.

  • Jgo555

I hope that damned Little League coach gets his face plastered ALL OVER THE DAMNED COUNTRY so that not even the fast food joints hire his paedo ass.

  • Boughtthefarm

June, I hope these cops are getting paid tripple time…thats how much it bothers me. Now that I think about it, its prob for the pedo protection that the cameras are there filming cause if it were me making those arrests, those men might not be fortunate enough to ever see handcuffs.

  • UniqueMommy1984

Well, I don't know. I was hoping that fact that Dateline airing it would scared individuals from trying to pick up minors over the internet and so forth but oh boy was I wrong.

  • UniqueMommy1984

You can't trust many people now a days. Especially when you have kids…..

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Amanda-Fields/100000974105457 Amanda Fields

Entrapment in cases like this is bullshit. no one forced these sick fucks to show up. I honestly don't care how its done but we as a nation need to get these fuckers AWAY from our kids.

  • guillotinegirl

Welcome to the internet, where men are men, women are men, and children are FBI agents.

  • DamagedGoods

Do you honestly think these were just some innocent guys tricked into driving to a stranger's house under the presumption of fucking a child there? That had they not seen the craigslist ads they would never abuse children? Bullshit, utter bullshit…

“Well I was just browsing Craigslist, and saw this ad requesting guidance for some stranger's 12 year old daughter… I think I'll see if we can have her do some naked gymnastics!”

As far as I'm concerned this IS child abuse prevention, if you're willing to answer some random ad on craigslist for this shit, chances are you're willing to abuse kids of your friends or family.

  • Dirk

But, as Chris Hansen intones at the start of every episode, they were really just paying Perverted Justice “to do what it usually does – track down online predators.”

  • Dirk

Be concerned, but verify. Most of the guys busted in the Dateline stings were found or pled guilty. Except for Murphy, Texas which threw them all out after the suicide.

  • Honestygone

I understand where you are coming from but the fact is, the police exposed their depravity before they committed their crimes against children. For this, they can spend all the time and money they want into nabbing these sick $u%@s.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cie.cheesemeister Cie Cheesemeister

I say good on the police for entrapping them. I also say, take them out, line them up against the wall, and mow 'em down. I'm sick of them breathing the same air that I do.

  • melb1970

It appears to me that by making these arrests they “investing” in child abuse prevention. These sick bastards were arrested because they responded to a Craigslist ad or thur a chat room um ——- obviously these guys already knew where to look to fulfill their deviant desires or they would have never stumbled upon this gem of an operation.
What's sickening is molesting a child even more sickening defending the creeps that set out with the intent to molest a child.

  • Athena

You know what they say – better to have one and not need it than to need it and not have one.

  • Athena

You seem generally with it (although I can tell we are political polar opposites based on your apparent bias against prison privatization, but I digress…); how you, an internet user, can think internet chat rooms are somehow LESS opportune than Disney World is beyond me. Been reading this site for long? There are plenty of stories of sick fucks who've used the internet to successfully prey upon children. Hell, there have been the real life versions of the sting described in this article – sick fucks who have found actual mothers via the internet who are intent on pimping out their pre-pubescent child.

So, while I would generally agree with your “One in the hand is worth two in the bush” style logic, internet solicitation is real and ever-increasing in frequency. I question the “preventive” actions of police, but cases like this are generally straightforward and, no, I don't take issue with them at this point. After all, if you're worried about wasted resources or creating criminals, the drug war deserves your attention far more at this point.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EJPZ2LPEAVWI5LW53ZDEC3ZTEE BenLen

wow,,, they should have these stings everyday, everywhere! ha ha

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EJPZ2LPEAVWI5LW53ZDEC3ZTEE BenLen

for you to sit there and think that's sickening.. scares me. You must be all for it. there's no other explanation why you would defend such acts in my mind.

  • Sugarglider1

Hell yes, I applaud these stings. Absolutely. I agree with BenLen's assessment of your assessment.

“These men were clearly willing to break the law but would they have if the opportunity never presented itself?”

It does all the time. Thankfully, they got caught in these particular attempts.

  • Sugarglider1

Exactly. The “opportunity” of which June speaks “presents itself” all the time. Luckily, in these cases, it was not a true opportunity.
