Kyron Horman: Still Missing

June 29, 2010 at 9:30 am by

Portland, OR – I really wish I was updating this story to tell you all that Kyron has been found – sadly, that isn’t the case. I do, however, want to keep this story updated and continue to keep the kiddo’s picture circulating. Though family members and investigators have remained fairly tight-lipped throughout the investigation, there have been a couple of interesting new developments in the case. Kaine Horman, Kyron’s father, has taken the couple’s 18-month-old daughter and vacated the home he shares with Terri Horman, Kyron’s step-mother. And friends of the Horman family say authorities encouraged Kaine to do so. Furthermore, those same friends report that Kaine has filed for both a restraining order and a divorce. Terri Horman, reportedly the last person to see Kyron, has been under intense scrutiny since he vanished more than three weeks ago. Though she has not been named a suspect, or even a person of interest, she has been singled out in a questionnaire sent to parents and staff of Skyline school just days after Kyron disappeared. Fliers bearing her picture and a picture of her truck were circulated – authorities wanted to know if anybody had seen Terri or her truck “at or near the school” the morning he disappeared. Then there’s the stories about inconsistencies in Terri’s account of what she was doing that day. Some sources say Terri’s cell phone records do not match up with the story she told authorities. And let’s not forget about the two polygraphs Terri has supposedly taken.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you’ve heard about Kyron and have seen the intense media coverage. The story was even featured in People Magazine. In one article, Terri’s father, Larry Moulton, is quoted as saying that Terri is cooperating with authorities, but that the questioning has been intense. He also reportedly told the magazine he thinks there is a “50/50″ chance his daughter would be arrested. He further stated that police have seized Terri’s truck twice and have questioned her several times, for up to six hours each time. Moulton later told media outlets in Portland that some of his statements were twisted around, but he didn’t specify which ones.

Shortly after the impending divorce was announced, Kaine, Kyron’s bio-mother, Desiree Young, and his step-father, Tony Young, released the following statement:

We have been fully briefed by law enforcement on the on-going criminal investigation.

We are in complete support of that investigation.  We have asked the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office to facilitate releasing this statement for us due to their access to the media/flash news.

We understand that we have free access to the media but are limiting statements to the media to keep the integrity of the investigation intact.

Any actions taken by the investigation, or by us, are based on the best interests of Kyron and Kiara and comply with the law. Beyond this, we have no comment on the matter.

Desiree, Tony and Kaine

As you can see, Terri’s name is not present on the statement. In a phone interview, Desiree was asked if Terri knew they had written the statement. She responded, “No, Terri didn’t know that we wrote this statement.” She wouldn’t comment as to why Terri wasn’t involved in the writing of it. And so the plot continues to thicken.

I have only touched on some of the rumors and details surrounding Kyron’s mysterious disappearance. There is a shit-ton of information out there on this case, yet very little of it can or will be confirmed or denied by law enforcement. Also, with all the media coverage and so many links to sift through, I’m sure I’ve left out more than I have added to this story. So please, feel free to share any and all information you have come across.

Ugh, this makes me nauseus. I had questions from the start, and each day he doesn't come home, is another ton of “dread” weighing down my heart.

  • CiaraLuna

I was so hoping that the step mom wasn't involved in this. She evidentally has been part of his life since he was an infant, what the hell happened on that day? He seemed to be such a happy child in all of the pictures of him. Not the usual of what we see here. If the step mom was involved, why doesn't she just come clean already. Let the rest of Kyron's family have some sort of closure instead of letting them suffer any longer. They have been through enough.

  • Parrot Toes (kathybird)

I really feel that this little boy is dead and has been since the beginning. I just hope for the family that his body is found so that his family can have closure. I also hope that the step mom doesn't kill herself before disclosing this information IF she is the one who did it. I was rooting for her somewhat, that she wasn't involved, but it's hard to think otherwise.

Of course, I hope I'm wrong that he's dead, and he is found alive, but I think that is just a fairytale ending at this point.

  • Smiley

This is just sad. The scary thing is, if the step-mom is involved, it increases the odds that he is not alive. (In my opinion). A stranger or aquaintance might have motive to hide him somewhere, but I can't see how/why step-mom would do that. If it's her, I just wonder why. Was it just to cut off the link between her husband and his ex?? 'Cause if so, that failed miserably. They're clearly teaming up to find their son (as they should), and they're not including step-mom. He is so cute and happy looking, I just pray I'm wrong and that he's found safe…..

  • Jamie Arnett71

i am wondering if she failed her lie detector test, and that is why he filed for divorce.
who knows? the whole thing is so sad.

  • Missycaro1981

I really don't know what to think….. Just hope that something gives and the family finds out what happens.

The letter Kyron's mom wrote to him was heart-wrenching and very difficult to read. I cannot even begin to imagine what his parents is going through.

  • http://www.dreamindemon.com Jaded

    Couldn't agree more, FF.

    Desiree's letter to Kyron:

    Dear Kyron,

I am so soooooo sorry that this has happened. I am sorry that I was not there to protect you. I will never be able to forgive myself for being so many hours away when you needed me the most. I pray that you come back to me because I am afraid that I can’t live without you. I miss you every second of every day. I would give my life for yours, I just want you back safe. You must come back to us. We have so many things that we have planned this summer that you are going to love. Quinn loves you so much and wants you home too. All of the family is here and wants you to know just how much they miss you. Mayson is terribly sad without his best friend to play with and wants you home soon.

When you come home I will show you all of things that everyone did for you, just to find you. There are literally hundreds of thousands of people that don’t know you and yet they pray for you every night. They know how much I miss you and need you and they just want to bring you home to me. There are so many wonderful people working on this case and they are going to find you soon.

I would give anything to run my fingers through your short hair again. I miss having you to hug anytime I want. Night time is always hard for me. I miss you so much and want you back here so that I can protect you from all of the horrible things in this world. I just can’t believe that you aren’t still with us. Your life has been really great and I know that it is done yet. A long time ago you saved my life and now I am going to do the same for you. Our lives will never be the same after this. I love you very much!

    Momma

  • isntblind

If the step-mom is involved, I feel it has something to do with jealousy. Even though she has been in his life since infancy, it may have not been apparent that the father's relationship with Kyron was extremely close until after Terri had a baby of her own. Maybe she felt their daughter would never be “No 1″ in the father's eyes and she didn't like that. It probably took some time to notice, and finally Terri couldn't take it anymore. She probably waited for the most opportune time and had it planned out for awhile…. If she had anything to do with it.

  • Skbmccollum

It's so easy to think that the step mom did it, so I am inclined to think it could be wrong. However, the restraining order and separation from Terri makes it more believable that she could have had something to do with his disappearance. What a mystery, huh?

  • arallyn

Ok, so I believe more than anything that the step-mom is most likely involved since the police seem to not be focusing at all on the biological mother or father (with reason), BUT! Why the hell do people keep quoting the results of polygraphs?!

They are REALLY inaccurate, at least by standards of gathering evidence…85% accuracy rate in a laboratory setting, which is ALWAYS higher than in the field! Studies in the American Sociological Review estimate polygraph accuracy in the field to range from 33%-75% depending on the circumstances and environment of the testing. The results are inadmissible in court, and judges will only very rarely allow it as evidence for a search warrant.

I know that the police don't focus completely on polygraphs, what with them not being suitable evidence, and though they can direct their search better with the results, they still seek evidence of any and all suspects. I absolutely abhor the media focusing on polygraph tests (not just this case I'm bitching about, but in general) and acting like they're definitive evidence of guilt or evidence. Very sedate people or seasoned criminals (or those who have practiced) can control their body enough to pass when they're guilty, and there are dozens of reasons why the innocent would produce a guilty result.

Bitching over. I really hope that the poor kid is ok, but I have a feeling he's not…at the very least, I really hope he didn't have to suffer if he's not ok.

  • Guest420

Hope the kids alright, if not justice must be served!

  • Wendy

I really feel the Stepmom had something to do with it and USED the school as her “alibi.” He was never there…that is a photo-shopped photo!!! Why haven't we heard when the dad last saw the boy? What happened between the time she was at the house and he was supposed to be at the school is only something she and God seem to know! Cough it up lady…quit leaving these poor people hanging and waiting to hear about their son! Something happened on that island they have been searching! Something feels like it's about to break in this case and it won't be pretty!! Does Oregon support the death penalty? Hopefully because she deserves it…just my opinion!! Hope she NEVER sees that baby girl again!!

  • http://justiceforcaylee.synthasite.com/ shyloh

Kyron was at school. His best friend saw him there and spoke to him. And that photo is not photo-shopped. And it isn't a fact that she was on that Island. Only the cell pings were close to it. And because they were pinging close to it they decided to search it.

  • Gcleland01

I think that the step mom could have used the school as the alibi, take him there, let him see his friends…snap a photo. Then tells kyron to meet her at her truck in a few minutes or whatnot. He had no reason not to trust her, so he walks out of that school and into her truck never to be seen again. She has her “alibi”……

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christian-Watkins/529874474 Christian Watkins

that's what I've been thinking…. but I hope that's not the case… Where the hell is the Lightman Group when you need them??

  • Theotherside

This whole case makes no sense. I hate it when parents who do not have custody of the child can complain about if their child is missing or dead. What kind of parent were you? You weren't there to protect the child in the first place. You cant step up to the plate after the fact. I could care less what that letter said. She was laying up with her new man, a cop and could have cared less about that child. Keep it real. And they are not saying if he was a difficult child if he suffered any mental illnesses. Not that this would be a reason for him to be missing or killed but could clue us in to a motive. Why is there so much focus on this story anyway there are thousands of missing children out there? Is it because he is white? Or is it because the step mother angle? What is it? And the step mother. We dont know the whole story. Why would all of the sudden would she want to kill him…that just doesnt make sense. I dont believe she had anything to do with it. If she did she would have been more discrete in killing him. Thats what what I believe.

  • Deety

I don't know if she's guilty or not, but she is a very convenient person to blame. It seems like when a case like this doesn't have an easy answer, the police tend to find someone convenient to blame it on, because that looks better on them than saying we have no idea what happened.

Of course, statistically a child is more likely to be killed or kidnapped by someone they know, so it certainly could be her. I would just hate to see an innocent woman's life torn apart (even more than it has been) by hyperbolic media accusations.

  • Dark_Star

The letter from Kyron's momma made me cry. I cannot imagine…don't want to even try to imagine the pain, the horror and the anguish she must be feeling.
I've had a feeling from day one that this little guy is no longer here on Earth. Someone took him away. IF IT IS his stepmother…then I hope they nail the fucking cunt.
I hope I am wrong and they find this little guy. I really do. Damn you Dreamin Demon for making me cleanse my tear ducts daily!!!

Terri Moulton Horman was “blindsided” by the divorce papers, according to a close friend.

A friend of Terri who wished to remain anonymous, told KOIN Local 6 Kyron Horman’s step-mother was caught off guard when she was served divorce papers as well as a restraining order from her husband and Kyron’s father, Kaine Horman.

“Terri didn’t know she was going to be hit with divorce papers or a restraining order,” the friend said.

The friend said Terri may consider talking publicly and airing her side of the story.

“She’s been doing what Kaine said all along and he’s been telling her to stay quiet. The public will benefit from hearing what she has to say.”

WTF? There are plenty of people who don't have custody of their kids. It doesn't mean they don''t love them and don't deserve to be devestated if something happens to them. What about all the Dads who get visitation every other weekend? Does that mean they were a bad parent? Oh wait..this is a case where Mom doesn't have custody, so she's held to a higher standard. If I ignored my son the way his father does I would be considered a horrible mother, but as a father it's just par for the course. My best friend's ex had custody of their son and it was through no wrongdoing on her part..he simply had more money to fight her. I guarentee that she would be a hell of a lot more upset if something happened to him. (She got him back later). Even as infrequently as my ex sees our son, I would fully expect him to be devestated if something happened to him. And WTF about her “laying up with her new man”…as far as I can tell Dad was remarried too, so yea no point there.

  • Janelle

Oh no. . . . if the dad got a restraining order and is divorcing her, he obviously suspects her, which means. . . . . . :-(

  • Southern Lady

I completely agree. I do not have custody of my children (two of them are grown now) because my husband could offer them a lovely huge home, medical insurance and good food to eat while I was recovering from my stroke. It has everything to do with how much I love them. I wanted them to have opportunities I could not offer. If anything happened to any of them, I would be completely devastated.

  • http://www.dreamindemon.com Jaded

He moved out of the rural Northwest Portland home sometime Saturday. Also Saturday, a 9-1-1 call came in from the Horman's home at 5:46 p.m., regarding “threats” at the property. The sheriff's office declined to allow its release, citing the ongoing investigation.

The stepmom declined to talk Tuesday.

In this type of case, the fracturing of the family is unusual, said Jack Levin, a criminology professor and co-director of Northeastern University's Brudnick Center on Violence and Conflict.

“In most cases of abduction or murder, the family members stick together. Even when all of the evidence points to one of them, they still believe in the innocence of the family member,” Levin said. “So, when you see the kind of reaction that this family had, you have to wonder whether there might not be some validity in their perception.”

Terri Horman was served with the restraining order and divorce papers about 6 p.m. Monday at her home, about 45 minutes after she denied to an Oregonian reporter who came to her door that her husband had moved out, and gave a thumbs up, saying, “Everything's good.”

A restraining order is issued if the petitioner can show he or his child is in “imminent danger of further abuse” by the respondent, and respondent represents a “credible threat to the physical safety of petitioner or petitioner's child.”

I saw on Nancy Grace last night that she had sent her own 11 year old son cross country to stay with family members because he was causing problems with her husband.
If she was willing to do that with her own child, what in the hell would she do to somebody else's kid if she thought he was getting more of daddy's love and attention than she was?

Kyron's family is positive he is still alive. Terri Young recently issued this statement:

“We implore Terri Horman to fully cooperate with investigators to bring Kyron home,” Desiree Young said Thursday. Accompanying her were her ex-husband and Kryon's father, Kaine Horman, and her current husband and Kyron's stepfather, Tony Young.

Terri Horman was not at the press conference, which lasted just about two minutes.

Desiree Young, who spoke through tears and had to pause at some points, also said that “Kyron is still alive” and that they continue to work with investigators to find him. She read from a prepared statement.

She asked the public to continue to be vigilant and to keep looking for the second-grader, who has been missing for nearly a month.

New details about a birthmark on Kyron's forehead have been released as well. His family spoke with reporters, off camera and off the record, after the press conference. Video at link….

While I can see your point & share your frustration when it is warranted, this does not seem to the case here with Kyron. I live a few hours from where his mother is from & it was on my news that he disappeared & she & her husband had left town to help search the same day it happened. Several friends & neighbors of the Youngs made statements about they missed Kyron (who visits every summer & several times a year) & were spreading the word about his disappearance in their town. Also, the family did tell the police & it was released to the media immediately that Kyron is a very well behaved, shy child who would never walk away from his school.

If anyone behaved indifferently, it was by far the stepmom. I've reserved judgment on her behavior but I've felt along that she was involved & I think that isntblind is right on about her motive being her own child. When I heard yesterday that the Hormans had a younger daughter, I couldn't help but think “oh shit, she DID do it”.

As for discretion, it's been 3 weeks & the police have no Kyron, no witnesses & no suspects — you can't get anymore discrete than that. That's my 2 cents.

  • http://www.dreamindemon.com Jaded

    Whoa…..

A landscaper who worked for Kyron Horman's family at their rural Northwest Portland home told authorities that the missing boy's stepmom offered to pay him to kill her husband.

The landscaper told authorities that Terri Moulton Horman approached him with the murder-for-hire plot six to seven months before Kyron disappeared, The Oregonian has learned.

She reportedly offered the landscaper, who advertises his expertise in lawn care, a large sum of money to carry out the scheme, sources say.

Detectives with the Multnomah County Major Crimes Team shared the landscaper's account with Kyron's father, Kaine Horman, last weekend, prompting him to leave the house June 26 with the couple's 19-month-old daughter.

Within two days, he obtained a family law attorney and filed divorce papers and a petition for a restraining order under the Family Abuse Prevention Act.

Investigators also recorded a conversation June 26 among the cooperating landscaper, Terri Horman and an undercover law enforcement officer, but Horman shut down the conversation fairly quickly, sources said.

Detectives later confronted Terri Horman directly with the murder-for-hire allegation, which she denied, sources say. She has not been charged with a crime, as a criminal investigation proceeds.
    [...]
After Kyron disappeared June 4, investigators with the county's Major Crimes Team tracked down the landscaper in the course of trying to interview everyone who had contact with the boy's family. They also found it odd that Terri Horman had hired a landscaper without her husband's knowledge.

The landscaper, contacted by The Oregonian last week, confirmed that he was hired to do lawn work at the Horman home off Northwest Sheltered Nook Road. He said he's talked with detectives and could not comment further. His name is being withheld to protect his identity as a cooperating witness in an ongoing criminal investigation.

Detectives last weekend also shared the information they developed about the alleged murder-for-hire scheme with Kyron's mother and stepdad, Desiree and Tony Young — providing a clearer indication of why the two banded together with Kaine Horman and the three suddenly and publicly distanced themselves from Terri Horman.
    [...]
Though the sheriff's office has consistently declined to say whether Terri Horman is a suspect or even a person of interest in the case, investigators have intently focused on her the past several weeks.

She was grilled for hours through two polygraph exams, friends and family said. Sources said there were indications of deception during her first polygraph and gaps in the timeline she gave investigators the day Kyron disappeared. Authorities released a flier and questionnaire June 18 featuring photos of Terri Horman and a white truck similar to the one she was driving when she took Kyron to school, asking whether anyone had seen either on June 4.

Last weekend, at 5:17 p.m. June 26, Terri Horman placed a 9-1-1 call, classified as a “threats” call, to Multnomah County dispatchers, and a sheriff's deputy responded. By 11:39 p.m., when her husband and her 19-month-old daughter hadn't returned home, Terri Horman placed another 9-1-1 call, one classified by dispatchers as a “custody” matter. Kaine Horman wasn't at the home when either call was placed, sources said. The sheriff's office has declined to allow the release of the 9-1-1 tapes.

    Theotherside,
Are you a parent? I'm thinking no.
“The Reason” is because when we drop our elementary students off at school,
we fucking assume they are going to be safe there until 3 o'clock when we then have to worry about buses or after school programs or whatnot. At walmart, shopping malls, fairs etc. I have control of my boys' safety but at school I do not. It is a polarizing case for all parents across the country. No offense meant. Just sayin'.

  • christy

This is so crazy. I do not have a gut instinct whether or not Kyron is still alive, but I hope to god that he is and that he is not afraid, or mistreated, and still has his glasses.
If Terri would try to contract a MFH scheme then she is capable of anything. My best guess: Kaine had an affair, she learned of it, she started affair w/landscaper, and either she or the landscaper, or both took and/or killed Kyron to hurt Kaine out of spite. I hope not though. In Alabama a few days ago, they questioned a server about a man, woman and Kyron-looking little boy eating at a restaurant. Please come home little red tree frog expert.

  • OpinionatedLioness

A lot of things do not add up here and I hope the authorities know these things and are just not releasing them to the 24 hour media whore machine aka sensationalists in the press. If for nothing else, so that it does not botch the investigation.

If she left with the child while there were other people looking at exhibits, someone must have affirmatively identified her and confirmed this fact.

Furthermore, Cell phone records could track her AFTER the fact. This is not difficult, so the veracity of her trip can be investigated.

Also, I think there is usually a “WHY” in criminal cases but sometimes you have some sadistic nut jobs who just commit violent crime because they do. In this case, it is very unclear why this woman would kill her step son. After so many years, you would think she would have grown to love him dearly. After all, she had cared for him since he was an infant.

The “WHY” is open and creates room for many other suspects.

Last of all. The delay is unconscionable. Law enforcement should be made more aware of how critical time can be in finding missing children.

The delay and the lawn mower guy plus all the other media speculations have led to this case being polluted. Let us hope this young boy was not targeted by some on line pedophile and kidnapped. This is one of the easiest ways in which parents unwittingly expose their children to criminals.

What were this child's online activities? Did he have a cellphone? Who else had access to this child in the past. What about the parents who were present in the school viewing exhibits. Were those parents checked out??

What about the Technology angle? Has it been ruled out?

To find a missing child, you must look at every single person that had or could have interacted with this child.

  • The_Shadow_Knows

Speaking of “why,” WHY did she lawyer up? Her stepson is missing, and she's hiding behind a lawyer instead of doing everything she can to help the police bring him home?

  • Kacee75

Because law enforcement decided they were the FBI and tried to do an undercover sting operation w/ the alleged hit man. She ended up calling the cops when he showed up on her doorstep demanding $$ to keep quiet. Apparently she told him to kick rocks and the next day she hired a criminal attorney. I find it all real hinky considering she allegedly approached this gardener 6 months ago. Why the heck didn't he come forward 6 months ago? Why wait until NOW to come forward?

This whole case is bizarre and I have a feeling the local law enforcement has really screwed it up.

I'm beginning to wonder if the stepmother sold Kyron to someone to get him out of the way. That would explain why Kyron's bio parents are so sure he's alive, and it would explain why LE is being so cautious about making an arrest.
